Dozens die in Indonesia hospital with oxygen shortage, as Delta variant sweeps the country

Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN)More than 60 people died in a hospital in Indonesia this weekend after oxygen supplies nearly ran out, as the country battles a severe wave of Covid-19 that authorities say is driven by the more infectious Delta variant.

The world's fourth most populous nation is facing one of Asia's worst outbreaks, with a record high of 27,913 new cases reported on Saturday. The islands of Bali and Java -- which includes the capital Jakarta -- went under emergency lockdown Saturday to curb the spread of the resurgent virus.
In a statement, the Sardjito hospital on Java said 63 patients died between Saturday and early Sunday after it nearly exhausted its oxygen supplies. The hospital said it had sought more oxygen for days before the incident, but virus patients streaming in since Friday had pushed it beyond its capacity, consuming oxygen faster than expected.
The crisis eased when it began to receive fresh supplies just before dawn on Sunday. A hospital spokesman could not confirm if all the dead had suffered from Covid-19.

In response, the government has asked the gas industry to increase production of medical oxygen, said health ministry official Siti Nadia Tarmizi. "We also hope people don't stock up on oxygen," she added.
Separately, the ministry overseeing Indonesia's Covid-19 response ordered the gas industry to prioritize production to fill estimated demand of 800 metric tons of oxygen each day for medical needs.
The industry has idle capacity of 225,000 metric tons a year that can still be used, the ministry added.
Hospitals across Java are being pushed to the brink by the spread of the highly infectious Delta variant, which was first identified in India, where it caused a dramatic spike in cases and pushed medical resources to the brink of collapse.
In Jakarta, the government said the daily figure of funerals following Covid protocols had risen tenfold since early May, with 392 burials on Saturday alone.

The country has "seen a dramatic increase in confirmed cases after the festive holidays," said Indonesian Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin on Friday.
Authorities had not initially realized how quickly the virus was spreading in this latest wave, he told CNN -- adding that the Delta variant was behind the rapidly deteriorating situation.
"This variant hits everyone -- not only children, but also adults," he said. "If we compare with the previous wave, the number of confirmed cases increased significantly faster for both adults and children."
The number of infected and hospitalized children is higher this time around compared to Indonesia's previous wave, perhaps due to the overall higher number of infections nationwide -- but their rate of hospitalization is still lower than for adult patients, he said.
More than 350 doctors and medical workers in Indonesia have contracted the disease despite being vaccinated with China's Sinovac shot, officials said in mid-June, leading to concerns about the efficacy of vaccines against more infectious variants.

Boris Johnson set to announce easing of social distancing rules despite backlash from scientists

Boris Johnson is poised to announce the easing of social distancing rules, despite a backlash from scientists over his willingness to accept more serious illnesses and deaths from Covid-19.

People will be urged to “learn to live with this virus”, when the prime minister unveils decisions on whether to scrap the “one-metre-plus rule” and work-from-home guidance, on Monday.

He is expected to say England is on course to remove the distancing rule on 19 July – allowing drinkers to order at the bar again – after a cabinet minister revealed the wearing of face masks will be voluntary.

But the likely end to restrictions, and a call by Sajid Javid, the new health secretary, for an acceptance that “cases are going to rise significantly”, likening Covid to flu, drew fierce criticism.

Mr Johnson will brace the public for serious illness and deaths to continue, at a Downing Street press conference – with the link from rising infections only “weakened”, not severed – but at far lower levels than before most people were vaccinated.

One member of the government’s Sage advisory body called Mr Javid’s comments “frightening”, while a second warned it would result in new “variant factories”, as transmission soared.

A public health expert branded the removal of all Covid restrictions in just two weeks’ time “absolutely bonkers” and Mr Johnson was warned the pandemic could still spiral “out of control”.

But the prime minister, who is also expected to kill off plans for Covid-status certificates to attend large events, will also argue for the virus to be considered like flu – which kills 20,000 people in a bad winter.

“As we begin to learn to live with this virus, we must all continue to carefully manage the risks from Covid and exercise judgement when going about our lives,” he will say.

Ministers and scientists will weigh up the latest data at a morning meeting. On Sunday, a further 24,248 lab-confirmed infections, and 15 deaths, were announced, while hospital admissions are rising by 24 per cent week-on-week.

The backlash came after Mr Javid called the health arguments for lifting all restrictions “compelling”, saying: “We also need to be clear that cases are going to rise significantly.”

Professor Stephen Reicher, a Sage member, tweeted: “It is frightening to have a ‘health’ secretary who still thinks Covid is flu, who is unconcerned at levels of infection, who doesn’t realise that those who do best for health also do best for the economy, who wants to ditch all protections while only half of us are vaccinated.

“The key message of the pandemic is “this isn’t an ‘I’ thing, it’s a ‘we’ thing. Your behaviour affects my health. Get your head around the ‘we’ concept.”

Professor Adam Finn, from the government’s Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), warned the pandemic could still spiral “out of control” in the UK.

“I shall certainly be continuing to wear a mask if I have got any symptoms, or if I am in an enclosed space with lots of other people for a prolonged period of time,” he said.

And, warning of countries in “fourth and fifth waves”, he added: “I’m worried about that, not just out of a sense of fairness for the people around the world, but actually also for us in the UK.”

Pointing to the arrival of the highly-infectious Delta variant from India, Prof Finn told Sky News: “That will happen again if the pandemic goes forward unchecked around the world.

“Then we’ll be left with a worse problem and I think that is the most likely scenario to cause a fourth or fifth wave in this country that would be out of control.”

Professor Robert West, a public health expert at University College London, argued the removal of all Covid restrictions so quickly was “absolutely bonkers”.

Norway delays full reopening over Delta Covid-19 variant

Norway has decided to delay the final phase of reopening until at least the end of the month over concerns around the Delta variant of Covid-19.

While some Covid-19 restrictions will be eased in Norway this week, bars and restaurants will remain limited to table service only, and gatherings of more than 20 people in private homes remain prohibited – two restrictions that were set to be lifted today.

Prime Minister Erna Solberg said on Monday: “There is a risk that the Delta variant will cause a fourth wave of infection in the unvaccinated part of the population among those who have only received one dose or are in vulnerable groups”.

“We have chosen to wait and see how the Delta variant affects the infection situation.”

She added that the next step of reopening would not take place until the end of July or beginning of August.

The Delta variant, first seen in India, is quickly becoming the globally dominant strain of Covid-19, according to the World Health Organisation, and the Norwegian health minister said that it could become the dominant variant in Norway this month.

To date, nearly two thirds of eligible Norwegians have received a Covid vaccine, and 37 per cent of adults are fully vaccinated.

Some restrictions were eased, however, and as of Thursday this week people will be allowed to attend outdoor events with up to 7,000 people in attendance, where assigned seating is in place and the venue is below 50 per cent capacity. Indoors, up to 3,000 people can attend events provided that there is assigned seating.

In both cases, attendees must present a Norwegian Covid-19 certificate, which contains data about each individual’s most recent Covid vaccination, recovery from Covid infections within the past six months, and recent negative Covid test results.

Venues will now also be allowed to welcome guests onto their premises past midnight.

On 3 July, Norway recorded 112 new Covid cases. The country has recorded 131,945 Covid infections and 794 related deaths since the pandemic began.

Some Spain regions reinstating COVID restrictions on nightlife after new infections soar

MADRID — Faced with soaring numbers of new coronavirus infections among unvaccinated young people, some Spanish regions are reinstating curbs on nightlife only weeks after dropping them.

Fearing that the surging contagion could strain health care services as stressed employees try to go on summer holidays, health officials in several parts of the country are also rushing to get COVID-19 vaccine shots to people under 30.

Spain's strict vaccination rollout has so far focused on older, more vulnerable groups, leaving the vaccination of teenagers and people in their 20s for the summer.

So far, 40% of Spain's 47 million people have been fully vaccinated, one of the highest levels in Europe, but that falls to one in ten vaccinated in the 20-29 age group and a meager 0.7% for those under 20.
