Cheap antidepressant shows promise treating early COVID-19

A cheap antidepressant reduced the need for hospitalization among high-risk adults with COVID-19 in a study hunting for existing drugs that could be repurposed to treat coronavirus.

Researchers tested the pill used for depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder because it was known to reduce inflammation and looked promising in smaller studies.

They've shared the results with the U.S. National Institutes of Health, which publishes treatment guidelines, and they hope for a World Health Organization recommendation.

The pill, called fluvoxamine, would cost $4 for a course of COVID-19 treatment. By comparison, antibody IV treatments cost about $2,000 and Merck's experimental antiviral pill for COVID-19 is about $700 per course. Some experts predict various treatments eventually will be used in combination to fight the coronavirus.

Richard P. Feynman
1965 Nobel Prize in Physics - Nobel Lecture

https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/physics/1965/feynman/lecture/:
......I suddenly realized what a stupid fellow I am, for what I had described and calculated was just ordinary reflected light, not radiation reaction.

If you understand what I said about your mistake: Mis-interpret the curves used to fit the data as a prediction, then you will realize that what a stupid fellow you are.

When doing research, we all occasionally make very stupid mistakes. So please do not upset because of your mistake. You might be just as stupid as Feynman who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1965. He is the greatest American physicist in history and he has been voted in 2000 as the 7th greatest physicist in history.

Although you are stupid in this case, you may be stupid enough to win a Nobel Prize in the future!

Good luck to your work.

Some people have written a couple of books about the COVID-19 pandemic and I MAY also write a book on it.

This 討論區 contains a lot of useful information to write such a book. Unfortunately, I have only recorded links from 討論區 06 to 09.:

523 new cases and 17 new deaths in Indonesia

I believe that the low number of new cases is due to few testing. The actual number should be much higher.

40,993 new cases (new national record) and 1,158 new deaths in Russia

The future of the pandemic is still very uncertain. Some experts said the true pandemic has not yet started.

For East Europe, the true pandemic should have just started: the worst is coming.

Therefore, I have been correct that I have not reported the number of recovered cases.

As early as on 07 March 2020, people in the chatroom at YouTube have already said the data from Iran was fake.
Why then I rejected the data from Iran later could created so many criticisms?

It is worth to read 支那武漢肺炎-全球疫情 討論區 01 because I have not read it previously.

Global death toll surpasses 5 million

The devastating human toll from the coronavirus reached another major milestone when the worldwide death tally surpassed 5 million, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

Nowhere else in the globe has the cost in lives been higher than in the United States, despite the country’s abundance of vaccines. Even through a decline in infections in recent weeks, the U.S. continues to experience about 1,400 daily deaths because of COVID-19, which has killed 746,000 Americans.

Brazil, India, Mexico and Russia are next on the somber list, although the numbers are unofficial. Because of underreporting in several nations, the worldwide tally is believed to be much higher than 5 million fatalities.

The U.S. death count has surpassed the estimated 675,000 Americans who died in the 1918 flu pandemic, and the emergence of vaccines toward the end of 2020 only slowed the pandemic’s pace.

The global death total reached 4 million in early July and grew by one million in less than four months. The U.S. accounted for about 18% of those million deaths while representing a little over 4% of the world’s population.

Re-openings

From Monday, South Korea will begin to live with the virus despite thousands of new confirmed cases every week. New measures will allow up to 10 people to meet in private gatherings across the country, while most businesses will be permitted to fully reopen as curfews end.

And in Japan's capital Tokyo, curfews were lifted for bars and restaurants at the end of last month, despite hundreds of new cases across the country every day.

And it's not just domestic restrictions that are lifting around the region.
While both Japan and South Korea continue to maintain strict border controls, including quarantines for most international arrivals, from Monday Thailand will welcome visitors from 63 countries, as long as they can prove they are fully vaccinated and have tested negative for Covid-19.

South Korea's return to 'normal life'

A 10 p.m. curfew on businesses, including restaurants and bars, has been lifted, while mass gatherings of up to 499 people can take place if everyone is vaccinated. All students will head back to school from November 22, according to the Education Ministry.
The removal of restrictions comes despite rising Covid-19 cases over the past week. On Sunday, South Korea reported 1,686 new infections, bringing its total to 366,386 since the pandemic began. To date, 2,858 have died in South Korea from the disease.
Prime Minister Kim said it wasn't the end of the fight against Covid-19, "but a new beginning." The country's health minister also warned there would likely be a rise in infections as a result of reopening.

Thaliand's reopening

Over the past week Thailand reported an average of nearly 9,000 new Covid-19 infections per day, far higher than the months of single-digit cases during much of 2020. Despite the high infection rates, the country is moving to reopen to international travelers in a bid to save its tourism industry, which accounted for more than 11% of its GDP in 2019, according to Reuters.

From Monday, citizens from dozens of "low-risk" countries, including Australia, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States, can travel to Thailand without needing to quarantine. In a statement on October 12, Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said the country couldn't afford to miss the December holiday period. "We must act quickly, but still cautiously, and not miss the opportunity to entice some of the year-end and new year holiday season travelers," he said.

Tonga's main island locks down after 1st virus case found

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Tonga's main island will go into lockdown for a week after the South Pacific nation reported its first case of the coronavirus, the government said Monday.

The far-flung archipelago identified its first virus case last week, after a traveler arriving from New Zealand tested positive and isolated at a quarantine hotel.

Tonga’s Prime Minister Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa said the lockdown would begin just after midnight on Tuesday and apply only to the island of Tongatapu, where a majority of the population live.

The nation’s Cabinet ordered the move to “ensure the safety and health of our people,” news website Matangi Tonga reported.

The lockdown will mean schools, bars and restaurants will be closed, and nighttime curfews imposed. People will be required to isolate at home unless they are buying groceries or medicine, getting medical help, or accessing banking services.

News of the case has prompted hundreds of Tongans to line up at vaccination sites around the country. About 31% of Tongans are fully vaccinated and 48% have had at least one dose, according to research group Our World in Data.

The infected traveler was among 215 passengers who arrived on a flight from Christchurch on Wednesday.

Christchurch had been free from the virus for months until last week, when several community cases were reported.

New Zealand health officials said the traveler to Tonga was fully vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine and had returned a negative test before leaving for Tonga.

Tonga is among the few remaining nations in the world that have avoided outbreaks of the virus due to its isolation.

The nearby nation of Fiji avoided significant outbreaks until April, when the delta variant ripped through the island chain, infecting more than 50,000 people and killing at least 673.

Tonga's frontline workers — including health staff, police officers and airport staff — who were on duty when the plane arrived had also been put into quarantine.

Located northeast of New Zealand, Tonga is home to about 106,000 people.
