Los Angeles County sees exponential growth in Covid-19 cases as Delta variant becomes dominant, worrying officials

(CNN)The most populous county in the US is seeing "exponential growth" of Covid-19 cases as the Delta variant takes over as the dominant coronavirus strain, health officials in Los Angeles County said.

"We do continue to see an uptick in cases and hospitalizations," Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said Thursday. "Deaths, fortunately, continue to be relatively low, but as hospitalizations continue to increase, we anticipate that deaths might also increase."

Vietnam still has better record than Taiwan. However, Taiwan has suppressed the latest wave of virus while Vietnam has not yet able to suppress this wave of virus.

Southern Africa hoped it was through the worst of Covid-19. Then the Delta variant arrived

Johannesburg, South Africa (CNN)Patients are crammed into every corner of the hospital's emergency room ward. They lie on beds and gurneys, or sit slumped in wheelchairs. Many suck on oxygen, but nobody talks. Some die while waiting for a bed.

On the worst nights in Johannesburg, currently in the grips of a terrible wave of infections, medics at one hospital must turn away ambulances carrying Covid-19 patients. It may be a diversion order more common to mass casualty events, but 16 months into the pandemic here, Covid-19 is a mass casualty event.
"It's devastating, it's soul destroying. We are trained to save lives, but you revert to that wartime mentality. You revert to becoming numbed, you revert to becoming blunted," said a senior doctor at a major public hospital in South Africa's largest city.
"Patients are being brought in in cars with desperately ill patients who have been turned away from other hospitals with no beds."
Like many healthcare workers CNN has spoken to during the crisis here, they did not want to be identified for fear of reprisals from the government.
"The third wave has been far more devastating, far more overwhelming," the doctor said.
The disease is no respecter of status, with authorities announcing Friday that the city's mayor had died of Covid-19 in hospital.
"It is my sad duty to confirm that the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Geoffrey Makhubo has indeed succumbed to Covid-19," said acting Executive Mayor and Member of the Mayoral Committee Eunice Mgcina via the official Twitter account of the city's authorities.
"We had hoped that the Executive Mayor would beat the virus and return to work and lead the city as we face this pandemic that has devastated lives and livelihoods. Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife, daughters, mother and the rest of his family, friends and comrades," added Mgcina.

FDA warns about possible link between J&J vaccine, autoimmune disorder

The Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine is once again raising concerns.

The Food and Drug Administration on Monday warned about a possible link between that vaccine and the autoimmune disorder known as Guillain-Barré syndrome. In a statement, the agency said the data "suggests an association” between the vaccine and a higher risk of the condition, but not enough "to establish a causal relationship.”

The Washington Post reported there have been about 100 instances of the possible connection, mostly among men and in many cases among those age 50 and older. Some 12.8 million doses of the J&J shot have been administered.

The CDC says on its website that people who have had Guillain-Barré syndrome can be vaccinated against COVID, and that no cases of the disorder were reported in clinical trials for the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. One case was reported in J&J trials.

Use of the J&J vaccine, hailed for its single-shot convenience, was paused for 10 days in April while federal health agencies investigated reports of six women developing rare but severe blood clots within two weeks of receiving the jab. The agencies later determined the vaccine's benefits outweigh its risks.

England sticks with July 19 reopening date

While issuing warnings that the pandemic is not over and won't be in a week, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed Monday that England will lift most remaining lockdown restrictions July 19 as planned, despite a sharp rise in coronavirus cases.

Johnson said that although COVID-19 risks remain, mandates will be replaced by a recommendation that people wear masks in crowded places and on public transport. Nightclubs and other venues with crowds should use vaccine passports for entry.

"This disease, coronavirus, continues to carry risks for you and your family,'' Johnson said. "We cannot simply revert instantly from Monday, July 19, to life as it was before COVID.”

As of Monday, 87% of the U.K.’s adult population has had a first vaccine dose, and 66% has had both doses. But infections have risen in recent weeks because of the delta variant. They've been running at more than 30,000 new cases daily and could soar to 100,000 later in the summer, Health Secretary Sajid Javid told the House of Commons.
