not that i'm paediatrics but surely if we are talking about somatic effects of infant neglect, it will be a long and slow presentation.

let's for arguments sake that this is tv and the baby do end up with severe physical symptoms, I can't imagine they will find no organic cause for the symptoms.

the baby is nothing more than a plot device in this episode and it's so damn cheesy

Failure to thrive is an issue of mal- or undernourishment, yes, but the psychosocial environment the baby’s in is often a contributing factor to FTT. Lack of bonding to the mother/other caregiver and lack of physical contact are absolutely medically recognized as contributors to some (though not all) cases of FTT, and skin-to-skin contact is a medically recognized therapy that benefits the child’s entire system, from lowered stress levels to faster growth and improved immune system.

I thought the show was actually heavy-handed in phoning in the problem to the viewer. The baby was isolated in an incubator, alone in a glass box, touched only with gloved hands, and not exposed to the full faces of family or medical staff. Gilead, while hyper-focused on the production of children, has clearly lost the thread on what kids (or anyone, for that matter) needs to thrive, including affection, touch, love, play, etc.

Would one night in Janine’s loving care have cured the baby overnight? No, and I understand why your suspension of disbelief was strained. For me, it’s when people are shot in the shoulder and shake it off. Shows take liberties, but there is at least real science behind the depiction of skin-to-skin care, if not a believable time frame.

The relationship between Jimmy and Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn) will be particularly dramatic this year.

“If you’re intrigued by the Jimmy-Kim relationship, this next season is gonna knock you out,” Odenkirk said. “There are scenes between Jimmy and Kim that are on another level that you haven’t seen on this show. They’re outside of character that a real couple needs to have… and it makes his life in Breaking Bad all the more tragic because she’s not in his life.”
