DR Congo election: Sadc proposes unity government

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-46856660

The southern African regional body Sadc has called for a unity government in the Democratic Republic of Congo, following the disputed presidential election.

All political leaders should agree a negotiated settlement, it said.

Opposition candidate Felix Tshisekedi was declared winner but another opponent of the current administration, Martin Fayulu, insists he won.

He alleges Mr Tshisekedi made a deal with outgoing President Joseph Kabila.

The declaration of Mr Tshisekedi as winner has also been disputed by the influential Catholic church which says it deployed 40,000 election monitors across the country.

On Saturday, Mr Fayulu filed an appeal in the Constitutional Court demanding a manual recount of votes cast in the 30 December election.

This call was supported by Sadc in its statement issued by Zambian President Edgar Lungu, who chairs Sadc's Politics, Defence and Security department.

US shutdown: Trump urged to temporarily reopen government

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-46858970

A senior US Republican has urged President Donald Trump to temporarily reopen parts of the government shut down for more than three weeks.

Senator Lindsey Graham, who is close to Mr Trump, said a limited re-opening of a few weeks would allow talks to resume between Republicans and Democrats.

The partial government shutdown has now become the longest in US history.

Mr Graham, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said he had urged the president on Sunday to temporarily reopen government to get negotiations started again.

He said if talks still failed to agree the funding, the White House could then declare a national emergency.

"Before he pulls the plug on the legislative option, and I think we are almost there, I would urge them to open up the government for a short period of time, like three weeks, before he pulls the plug (to) see if we can get a deal," Mr Graham told Fox News Sunday.

He said Mr Trump had told him: "Let's make a deal, then open up the government."

Trump and GOP taking messaging hit on shutdown

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/01/13/government-shutdown-republicans-trump-1098723

President Donald Trump and Republicans are losing the messaging war on the government shutdown.

The shutdown is now the longest in U.S. history, entering its 23rd day, and there appears to be no end in sight. As Trump repeatedly declares he won't reopen the government unless he gets funding for his border wall, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) are adamant that they will not fund the project.

Trump’s message on the shutdown — blaming Democrats for refusing to concede on his border wall — isn't convincing the American public. Instead, the majority of Americans think Trump and Republicans are at fault for the shutdown, according to two new polls. A Washington Post-ABC News poll found that 53 percent of respondents blamed Trump and Republicans in Congress for the shutdown, while 29 percent blamed Democrats. Thirteen percent of respondents said both sides were equally to blame.

Another poll from CNN found that 55 percent of respondents blamed Trump, while 32 percent blamed Democrats. Nine percent blamed both sides.

Trump's disapproval ratings are also rising, with the CNN poll showing his overall rating worsening by 5 percentage points since the shutdown started.

Yet in what could be a troubling omen for any deal to end the stalemate, Trump's message on the wall is growing more popular with Republicans, according to both polls.

That means that while the broader American public doesn't like what it's hearing from the White House, GOP voters do. That means crossing the aisle and voting with Democrats may become even harder for wobbly Republicans who want to reopen the government. So far, only a dozen House Republicans have done so, as well as three GOP senators.

Turkey dismisses Trump threat to economy over Syrian Kurds

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-46860902

Turkey has dismissed President Donald Trump's threat to "devastate" its economy if it attacks Kurdish forces in Syria following a planned pullout of US troops.

"You cannot get anywhere by threatening Turkey economically," Foreign Minister Nevlut Cavusoglu said.

US forces have fought alongside a Kurdish militia in northern Syria against the Islamic State (IS) group.

Turkey, however, regards the People's Protection Units (YPG) as terrorists.

Mr Trump tweeted on Sunday that the withdrawal from Syria had begun, and that the US would "devastate Turkey economically if they hit the Kurds".

He also said any remaining IS fighters could be attacked from the air, and that a 20-mile (32km) "safe zone" could be established.

Theresa May urges MPs to back Brexit deal 'for country's sake'
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-46856149

Theresa May has urged MPs to back her Brexit deal "for the country's sake" as Tuesday's Commons vote looms closer.

She warned of "paralysis in Parliament" if the deal is rejected and said trust in politics would suffer "catastrophic harm" if the UK did not leave the EU.

The PM welcomed new EU assurances over the impact of the deal on Northern Ireland, saying they had "legal force".

The EU said it didn't want to use the "backstop" but, if it did, it would be for "the shortest possible period".

The "backstop" is the fallback plan to avoid any return to physical Northern Ireland border checks.

In a letter to Mrs May, the EU said new commitments to look at alternatives to the customs arrangement and to fast-track talks on future relations had "legal value" and the EU would treat them "in the most solemn manner".

May says opponents of Brexit deal risk 'letting British people down'
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-46856149

Theresa May has warned opponents of her Brexit deal that they risk "letting the British people down" as Labour said the prime minister faced a "humiliating defeat" in Tuesday's crunch vote.

She urged critics to give the deal "a second look", insisting new assurances on the Irish border had "legal force".

She said the "history books" would judge if MPs delivered on Brexit while safeguarding the economy and security.

But Jeremy Corbyn said the PM had "completely and utterly failed".

And the SNP said the PM was "in fantasy land and the government should stop threatening no-deal".

MPs will vote on the terms of the UK's withdrawal from the EU and declaration on future relations on Tuesday evening.

Labour and the other opposition parties will vote against the deal while about 100 Conservative MPs, and the Democratic Unionist Party's 10 MPs, could also join them.

Both Mrs May and Mr Corbyn met their backbenchers after the PM's Commons statement on Monday night - the PM to appeal once more for their support and the Labour leader to reiterate his plan to call for a general election if the deal is rejected.

Mr Corbyn also told his MPs a no-confidence vote in the prime minister would be "coming soon", according to BBC political correspondent Iain Watson.

Trump's AG nominee pledges to allow Mueller to complete investigation

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/01/14/barr-mueller-investigation-1099069

Attorney General nominee William Barr will pledge this week to allow special counsel Robert Mueller to complete his investigation into suspected collusion between President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia, according to his written testimony submitted to the Senate.

The Mueller investigation is expected to take center stage when Barr appears before the Senate Judiciary Committee for his confirmation hearing Tuesday and Wednesday. In his prepared testimony, Barr emphasized his respect for the investigation and aimed to reassure lawmakers that his allegiance is to the rule of law.

“I believe it is in the best interest of everyone – the President, Congress, and most importantly, the American people – that this matter be resolved by allowing the Special Counsel to complete his work,” Barr wrote in his testimony. “The country needs a credible resolution of these issues.”

Barr has faced criticism since his nomination last month because of a series of published comments critical of the Russia probe and also Mueller’s interest in investigating whether Trump obstructed justice when he fired former FBI Director James Comey.

But in his written testimony, Barr sought to deflect that criticism by noting he has known Mueller “personally and professionally” for 30 years dating back to their time working together during the George H.W Bush administration, when Barr was serving as attorney general.

“We’ve been friends since,” Barr said. “I have the utmost respect for Bob and his distinguished record of public service.”

Trump denies he ever worked for Russia

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-46867932

US President Donald Trump has denied working for Russia, pouring scorn on the latest reports to cast scrutiny on his relationship with Moscow.

Addressing reporters at the White House as he left for Louisiana, he said: "I never worked for Russia."

He played down a Washington Post report that he had concealed a translation of a meeting with Mr Putin.

According to the New York Times meanwhile, the FBI launched a hitherto unreported inquiry into the president.

Mr Mueller is leading an ongoing investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with the Kremlin to influence the 2016 presidential election.

Asked outside the White House on Monday if he was working for Russia, Mr Trump denied it outright before adding: "I think it's a disgrace that you even ask that question because it's a whole big fat hoax."
