Jamal Khashoggi: Saudi Arabia under pressure from Trump administration

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/oct/11/jamal-khashoggi-saudi-arabia-under-pressure-from-trump-administration

Saudi Arabia is facing unprecedented diplomatic pressure from the Trump administration and other allies to provide a credible account of how Jamal Khashoggi vanished at its consulate in Istanbul, with reports in the US implicating the powerful crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, in plans to abduct the dissident journalist.

The US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, Donald Trump’s national security adviser, John Bolton, and the president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, have pointedly asked the kingdom’s de facto ruler to explain what happened inside its diplomatic mission nine days ago, as evidence continues to mount that Khashoggi was killed and dismembered.

Trump has suggested that US investigators have been dispatched to look into the disappearance.

“We’re being very tough. And we have investigators over there and we’re working with Turkey, and frankly we’re working with Saudi Arabia. We want to find out what happened,” Trump told Fox News on Thursday morning. The US state department had referred earlier questions about the case to the FBI.

Under pressure from parliamentary partner, May's meets ministers on Brexit

https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-britain-eu/under-pressure-from-parliamentary-partner-mays-meets-ministers-on-brexit-idUSKCN1ML16A

LONDON (Reuters) - Prime Minister Theresa May will meet some of her ministers on Thursday to discuss Brexit, hours after her parliamentary partner threatened to withdraw its support if she accepts what it calls a “draconian solution” from the European Union.

Just six months before Britain is due to leave the EU, the two sides differ on their view of the talks - the bloc says a withdrawal deal is within reach, while British officials say “big issues” still lie in the way of any agreement.

They do agree on one thing - that time is running out to seal a deal to pave the way for Britain’s divorce, the biggest change in trade and foreign policy for more than 40 years. As that departure date creeps closer, those wanting to influence May’s approach to Brexit are intensifying their efforts.

Andrew Brunson: Turkey to release US pastor Brunson

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-45841276

A court in Turkey has freed a US pastor from house arrest in a case that badly strained ties between the US and Turkey.

Andrew Brunson was arrested over alleged links to political groups, including the banned Gulenist movement, following the failed 2016 coup attempt.

The court convicted him of terror charges and sentenced him to jail but he will not serve time.

He denied charges of espionage, which could have led to a 35-year jail term.

The pastor is a long-term resident in Turkey. He lived with his wife and three children while working for the small Izmir Resurrection Church, which had a congregation of about two dozen.

Macron seeks answers from Saudi Arabia on Khashoggi

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-saudi-politics-dissident-france/macron-seeks-answers-from-saudi-arabia-on-khashoggi-idUSKCN1MM1AV

PARIS (Reuters) - French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday became the latest ally to demand answers from Saudi Arabia on the fate of veteran Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, last seen in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul more than a week ago.

France had so far been guarded in its reaction to the disappearance; Paris and Riyadh enjoy close diplomatic ties and commercial relations spanning energy, finance and arms.

“I’m waiting for the truth and complete clarity to be established “, Macron said in an interview with France 24 television.

“What’s been mentioned is serious, very serious ... France wants everything to be done so that we have all the truth on this case, of which the first elements are extremely worrying.”

Trudeau says Canada will maintain human rights pressure on Saudis

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-saudi-canada/trudeau-says-canada-will-maintain-human-rights-pressure-on-saudis-idUSKCN1MM1YV

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday said he would maintain pressure on Saudi Arabia over human rights despite a diplomatic row between the two nations, and brushed off suggestions he had botched ties with Riyadh.

Horak told Reuters on Wednesday that Ottawa had not done enough to deepen ties with Riyadh and had made mistakes that helped prompt the dispute.

“The former ambassador should have known that we have been engaged in a significant diplomatic effort with Saudi Arabia for many years now on ... the issue of human rights. We continue to bring it up any time I have the opportunity to meet with Saudi leadership,” Trudeau told reporters in Yerevan, Armenia.

“We will continue to be clear and strong in speaking up for human rights around the world,” he added in televised remarks on the sidelines of a summit of French-speaking nations.

U.S.-China trade talks must cover currency, U.S. Treasury chief says

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-imf-worldbank-mnuchin/u-s-china-trade-talks-must-cover-currency-u-s-treasury-chief-says-idUSKCN1MM0VQ

NUSA DUA, Indonesia (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Friday that he told China’s central bank chief that currency issues need to be part of any further U.S.-China trade talks and expressed his concerns about the yuan’s recent weakness.

Mnuchin also told Reuters in an interview that China needs to identify concrete “action items” to rebalance the two countries’ trade relationship before talks to resolve their disputes can resume.

The U.S. Treasury chief and People’s Bank of China Governor Yi Gang extensively discussed currency issues on the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank annual meetings on the Indonesian resort island of Bali.

“I expressed my concern about the weakness in the (yuan) currency and that as part of any trade discussions, currency has to be part of the discussion,” Mnuchin said of the meeting.

The two senior officials talked about market fundamentals that have driven the yuan down against the dollar, Mnuchin said, adding: “I think we had a productive explanation from his standpoint on those issues.”

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-saudi-politics-dissident-minister/saudi-arabia-denies-allegations-regarding-murder-of-khashoggi-interior-minister-idUSKCN1MM2PM

CAIRO (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia denied allegations regarding the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Saudi Interior Minister said late on Friday.

He said that allegations about orders to murder Khashoggi were “lies” targeting the government, according to the official Saudi Press Agency.

Khashoggi entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2 to get documents for his forthcoming marriage. Saudi officials have said that he left shortly afterwards but Turkish officials and his fiancée, who was waiting outside, have said that he never came out.

U.S. envoy for Afghan peace meets Taliban officials in Qatar: WSJ

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-afghanistan-usa-envoy/u-s-envoy-for-afghan-peace-meets-taliban-officials-in-qatar-wsj-idUSKCN1MM2NQ

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. envoy for Afghanistan peace efforts met with Taliban representatives in Qatar on Friday as President Donald Trump’s administration pushed to find a way to end the 17-year-old Afghan war, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The Journal, citing a person familiar with the gathering, said U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad met with Taliban officials in Doha, the second time in four months that American officials have held face-to-face talks with Taliban representatives.

The Journal said it was not clear what the two sides discussed. Khalilzad, who is trying to bring the Taliban to the negotiating table, is currently on his first trip as the special representative. His 11-day trip was to take him to Afghanistan, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

China trade surplus with US widens to record $34.1B

https://www.apnews.com/962a3f480f59463e88ebb9f057e37157

BEIJING (AP) — China’s trade surplus with the United States widened to a record $34.1 billion in September as exports to the American market rose by 13 percent over a year earlier despite a worsening tariff war.

Exports to the United States rose to $46.7 billion, down from August’s 13.4 percent growth, customs data showed Friday. Imports of American goods increased 9 percent to $12.6 billion, down from 11.1 percent.

Chinese exports to the United States have at least temporarily defied forecasts they would weaken after being hit by punitive tariffs of up to 25 percent in a fight over American complaints about Beijing’s technology policy.

“Exports continued to defy U.S. tariffs last month but imports struggled in the face of cooling domestic demand,” said Julian Evans-Pritchard of Capital Economics in a report. “We expect both to soften in the coming quarters.”

September marked the second straight record Chinese monthly trade surplus with the United States after August’s $31 billion.

Export numbers have been buoyed by producers rushing to fill orders before American tariffs rose, but they also benefit from “robust U.S. demand” and a weaker Chinese currency, which makes their goods cheaper abroad, said Louis Kuijs of Oxford Economics in a report.

The yuan has lost nearly 10 percent of its value against the U.S. dollar this year. That prompted suggestions Beijing might weaken the exchange rate to help exporters, but that might hurt China’s economy by encouraging an outflow of capital. The central bank has tightened controls on currency trading to head off further declines.

China’s overall export growth accelerated, temporarily defying forecasts of a slowdown as the global economy and consumer demand cool.

Bavaria election: German conservatives lose their fizz

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-45835795

The CSU is bracing itself for humiliating losses in Sunday's Bavarian state election. The party is on course to lose the absolute majority its leaders once took for granted.

This is likely to be an historic election which will define Bavaria's very identity, encapsulated in the word "Heimat" (homeland).

"In this election every party claims the term 'Heimat' for themselves," says businessman Franz Bergmüller. "What matters is who defends the values of Heimat."

As far as Mr Bergmüller is concerned, only the far-right, anti-migrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) party does that.

He is one of their leading candidates, having defected from the CSU.

Jamal Khashoggi: UK and US 'could boycott' Saudi conference

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-45853598

Britain and the US are considering boycotting a major international conference in Saudi Arabia after the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, the BBC has learned.

Mr Khashoggi, a critic of the Saudi government, vanished on 2 October after visiting its consulate in Istanbul.

The authorities in Istanbul believe he was murdered there by Saudi agents - claims Riyadh has dismissed as "lies".

Donald Trump has said he would "punish" Saudi Arabia if it was responsible.

A number of sponsors and media groups have decided to pull out of this month's investment conference in Riyadh, dubbed Davos in the Desert, as a result of concerns over Mr Khashoggi's fate.

Diplomatic sources have now told the BBC's James Landale both the US Treasury Secretary, Steve Mnuchin, and the UK's International Trade Secretary, Liam Fox, might not attend the event, which is being hosted by the kingdom's Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman to promote his reform agenda.

China central bank chief says plenty of room for monetary adjustments amid trade row

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-imf-worldbank-china-economy/china-central-bank-chief-says-plenty-of-room-for-monetary-adjustments-amid-trade-row-idUSKCN1MO01G

NUSA DUA, Indonesia (Reuters) - China central bank governor Yi Gang said on Sunday he still sees plenty of room for adjustment in interest rates and the reserve requirement ratio (RRR), as downside risks from trade tensions with the United States remain significant.

China faced “tremendous uncertainties” due to the impact of tariffs and trade frictions and was seeking a “constructive solution” to the current trade tensions, Yi said at a seminar on the sidelines of the annual International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings on the Indonesian island of Bali.

“We still have plenty of monetary policy instruments in terms of interest rate policy, in terms of RRR. We have plenty of room for adjustment, just in case we need it,” Yi said.

https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/reuters/swedish-centre-right-alliance-leader-abandons-attempt-to-form-govt-for-now/44472444

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - The leader of Sweden's Moderate Party, Ulf Kristersson, said on Sunday he had been unable to get enough support for a centre-right coalition government, putting the task of finding a candidate for prime minister back in the hands of parliament's speaker.
Sweden has been in a state of political deadlock since a Sept. 9 election when neither the Alliance bloc - headed by Kristersson - nor a grouping of centre-left parties won enough votes for a majority and both ruled out a deal with the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, who hold the balance of power.
Kristersson said on Friday he was prepared to try to form a minority government without all the parties in the four-party Alliance bloc, but the Liberal and Centre parties of his bloc scuppered the plan by refusing to back it.
"I have done what I can, for now," Kristersson said on Sunday as he told the speaker he was giving up his attempts to form a government for the moment.
The speaker has four attempts to find a prime minister acceptable to parliament or there will be another election. The speaker said on Sunday he would talk to the parties on Monday and hand someone else the task of forming the government.
The baton is likely to pass next to Stefan Lofven, the leader of the Social Democrats and current caretaker prime minister. He lost a no-confidence vote in Parliament on Sept. 25.

Bavaria elections: Polls open in divisive vote

https://www.dw.com/en/bavaria-elections-polls-open-in-divisive-vote/a-45881348

Bavarians headed to the polls on Sunday in a historical vote to elect a regional parliament and government that could see the long-ruling Christian Social Union (CSU) lose their absolute majority in the state legislature.

The election could spell trouble for German Chancellor Angela Merkel's fragile coalition government, which comprises her Christian Democrats (CDU), their Bavarian sister party, the CSU, and the center-left Social Democrats (SPD).

Polls suggest:

The CSU could take a beating and pickup 33 percent of the vote, down from 47.7 percent in 2013.

The Greens could make a strong showing with 18 percent of the vote, up from 8.6 percent in 2013.

The SPD could suffer a devastating result with 11 percent, down from 20.6 percent in 2013.

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) could enter the regional parliament with 10 percent.

Luxembourg election presents tough challenge to PM Xavier Bettel

https://www.dw.com/en/luxembourg-election-presents-tough-challenge-to-pm-xavier-bettel/a-45880907

The future of Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel hangs in the balance as some 256,000 voters head to the polls in the European land-locked Grand Duchy on Sunday. Any party or alliance needs to obtain 31 seats to form a government.

Opinion polls suggest Bettel could lose the vote due to his unpopular economic policies and declining support within his Democratic Party and coalition partners. A high growth rate under the coalition has put pressure on housing and infrastructure.

According to polls, a quarter of voters were undecided in who to vote for.

Claude Wiseler, a former literature teacher and the prime minister candidate of the Christian Social People's Party (CSV), is expected to pick up seats.

Bettel became the country's prime minister in 2013 after a spying scandal toppled the CSV government of Jean-Claude Juncker, who is now president of the European Commission.

EU-UK Brexit agreement deal set to be announced

https://www.dw.com/en/eu-uk-brexit-agreement-deal-set-to-be-announced/a-45882811

As diplomats from both sides scrambled to reach a deal on Brexit before an EU leaders' summit in Brussels on Wednesday, Welt am Sonntag and Süddeutsche Zeitung reported they had obtained details of a schedule for an announcement.

According to the reports, backed by sources in Brussels, a confirmation of a tentative Brexit deal could be made in the Belgian capital on Sunday, allowing British Prime Minister Theresa May to present the proposals to her cabinet in London on Monday.

If May has agreement from her ministers, a joint EU-UK press conference could take place in Brussels on Monday evening, followed by a meeting of EU ministers on Tuesday and then the EU summit on Wednesday.

Neither paper gave details of the provisional Brexit deal. But on Saturday, business website Bloomberg reported that British and UK officials had agreed to extend the 21-month transition period that kicks in following Brexit day in March 2019.

The transitional phase keeps Britain within the EU's single market and customs union but London would lose its direct influence in policy making in Brussels.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-mattis/president-trump-says-he-is-unsure-if-defense-secretary-mattis-will-depart-idUSKCN1MO0I4

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said he is unsure whether Defense Secretary James Mattis is planning to step down from his post, but told CBS’ “60 Minutes” in a pre-taped interview that the retired general might and that he regards Mattis as “sort of a Democrat.”

“It could be that he is” planning to depart, Trump said, according to an excerpt of a transcript released on Sunday before the show airs. “I think he’s sort of a Democrat, if you want to know the truth. But General Mattis is a good guy. We get along very well. He may leave.”
