Jamal Khashoggi: Turkey 'to search Saudi consulate' in Istanbul

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-45863334

Turkish officials investigating the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi will search Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul later on Monday, according to reports.

Turkish officials believe Mr Khashoggi was murdered in the consulate by Saudi agents nearly two weeks ago, but Riyadh strongly denies this.

Diplomatic pressure is growing on the Saudis to give a fuller explanation.

On Monday, Saudi Arabia's King Salman ordered an investigation into the case.

"The king has ordered the public prosecutor to open an internal investigation into the Khashoggi matter based on the information from the joint team in Istanbul," an official quoted by Reuters news agency said

Turkish diplomatic sources said the consulate would be searched by a joint Turkish-Saudi team in the late afternoon or evening. Details of how the search will be carried out have not been revealed.

Donald Trump: 'Nobody treats us much worse than the EU'

https://www.dw.com/en/donald-trump-nobody-treats-us-much-worse-than-the-eu/a-45888402

US President Donald Trump on Sunday again railed against the trans-Atlantic trade relationship, claiming that "nobody treats us much worse than the European Union."

"The European Union was formed in order to take advantage of us on trade, and that's what they've done," Trump said in a televised interview on CBS.

Trump and European Commission President Jean-Claude Junker agreed in July to reduce trade tensions and work toward elimination of tariffs on industrial goods. Both sides also agreed no new tariffs would be imposed as trade talks continue, taking US threats to impose levies on European auto imports temporally off the table.

The ceasefire tamped down escalating trans-Atlantic trade tensions that threatened to morph into a tit-for-tat trade fight as witnessed between the US and China. An unorthodox Trump administration trade strategy with Mexico and Canada led the three sides to reach a new trade deal earlier this month.

Stalemate: May under mounting pressure to rethink Brexit plan

https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-britain-eu/stalemate-may-under-mounting-pressure-to-rethink-brexit-plan-idUSKCN1MP12B

LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Theresa May will face mounting pressure on Monday to rethink her plan for leaving the European Union after Brexit talks reached a stand-off at the weekend over the so-called Irish backstop.

Less than six months before Britain leaves the bloc and days before May heads to Brussels for a summit on Wednesday when both sides hope to make progress, the Brexit talks were paused on Sunday after the two sides failed to agree on how to deal with the United Kingdom’s only land border with the EU.

The talks stumbled over how to prevent the return of a hard border between the British province of Northern Ireland and EU-member Ireland after Britain leaves in its biggest shift in policy for more than 40 years.

There has been little success in narrowing the gap between those competing demands, and Ireland’s Foreign Minister Simon Coveney said any deal would now “take a bit more time than many people had hoped”.

But a spokesman for May said there were “a number of means of achieving what we want to achieve” on the backstop. He declined to give details and repeated Britain’s view that any such arrangement would be time-limited.

Merkel's sister conservatives battered in Bavaria, Greens gain big

https://www.dw.com/en/merkels-sister-conservatives-battered-in-bavaria-greens-gain-big/a-45884764

The Christian Social Union (CSU) won the most votes in Sunday's regional election in Bavaria, one of Germany's conservative heartlands. But for only the third time in post-war history, Bavaria's dominant political force will have to share power.

According to preliminary results, the CSU lost its absolute majority in the southern German state, taking 37.2 percent of the vote. The Greens earned the second-largest share of the vote with at least 17.5 percent. They were followed by the right-leaning Free Voters with 11.6 percent and the far-right populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party with 10.2 percent. The Social Democratic Party (SPD) continued to decline in popularity, getting only 9.7 percent, while the business-friendly Free Democratic Party was projected to clear the five-percent hurdle needed for parliamentary representation. Those figures varied as more and more votes were counted, with the CSU making slight gains and the SPD minimal losses.

According to early estimates, the CSU garnered between 74 and 83 of the 192 to 200 total seats in the regional parliament, far short of the party's previous absolute majority. But the complex calculations concerning parliamentary seats were set to continue into Monday.

Trade war cost: China's third quarter GDP growth seen hitting lowest since 2009 - Reuters poll
https://reut.rs/2pV1cbv

BEIJING (Reuters) - At week’s end, global investors and policy makers will likely be given a stark reminder of the costs of a bitter Sino-U.S. trade war, with a Reuters poll predicting that China’s third-quarter growth will slow to its weakest pace since the global financial crisis.

Domestic demand has been faltering in recent months as U.S. President Donald Trump’s campaign to force China to make sweeping changes to intellectual property, industrial subsidy and trade policies start to depress export earnings.

Beijing has been trying to ward off a sharper slowdown in the world’s second-largest economy by stepping up policy support and softening its stance on a de-risking campaign, as the full impact of higher U.S. trade tariffs has still to be felt.

A poll of 68 economists showed gross domestic product likely grew 6.6 percent in July-September from a year earlier, slowing from the previous quarter’s 6.7 percent and hitting the weakest pace since the first quarter of 2009.

The predicted third-quarter growth would still be higher than the government’s full-year target of around 6.5 percent.

Cherokee Nation slams Sen. Elizabeth Warren DNA test as 'inappropriate and wrong'

Responding to years of derision by President Donald Trump, Sen. Elizabeth Warren released a report on a DNA analysis that provides strong evidence she does have Native American heritage. She also released a campaign-style video about the DNA test. (Oct. 15)

WASHINGTON – Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., released the results of a DNA test Monday that found she had Native American heritage in her background, but the Cherokee Nation – which represents the tribe Warren claims she is descended from – is far from embracing her as a new member.

"A DNA test is useless to determine tribal citizenship," Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr. said in a statement. "Current DNA tests do not even distinguish whether a person’s ancestors were indigenous to North or South America."

Indeed, the genetic analysis report released by Warren concedes that because there are not samples available from many North American groups, the senator's DNA was compared against samples from Mexico, Peru and Colombia. Most Native American groups in the U.S. have declined to participate in recent genetic studies, the report said.

In addition to the lack of specificity and the fact that DNA tests do not meet the existing legal standards set by the tribal nations to determine citizenship, Hoskin Jr. said that using "a DNA test to lay claim to any connection to the Cherokee Nation or any tribal nation, even vaguely, is inappropriate and wrong."

"It makes a mockery out of DNA tests and its legitimate uses while also dishonoring legitimate tribal governments and their citizens, whose ancestors are well documented and whose heritage is proven," he said. "Senator Warren is undermining tribal interests with her continued claims of tribal heritage."
2018-10-16 20:23:35
President Donald Trump, who has attacked Warren's claims to Native American heritage for years, at first responded to the results by saying, "Who cares?" Later, he dismissed the results, saying, "How much? One one-thousandth?"

When asked if he thinks he owes Warren an apology, he said Warren "owes the county an apology."

Warren's colleague, Sen. Orrin Hatch, poked fun at the DNA report in a tweet.

"These DNA tests are quite something," the tweet reads, posted with a photo of the Utah Republican checking his phone for his own genetic analysis.

The results for the retiring 84-year-old lawmaker: "1/1032 T-Rex; The rest: other dinosaurs."

連Obama之前個campaign manager同White House deputy chief of staff都屌做咩撚野

Jim Messina, who managed President Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign and served as White House deputy chief of staff, questioned the timing of the move.

“Argue the substance all you want, but why 22 days before a crucial election where we MUST win house and senate to save America, why did @SenWarrenhave to do her announcement now? Why can’t Dems ever stay focused???” he tweeted.

Pocahontas (the bad version), sometimes referred to as Elizabeth Warren, is getting slammed. She took a bogus DNA test and it showed that she may be 1/1024, far less than the average American. Now Cherokee Nation denies her, “DNA test is useless.” Even they don’t want her. Phony!

Now that her claims of being of Indian heritage have turned out to be a scam and a lie, Elizabeth Warren should apologize for perpetrating this fraud against the American Public. Harvard called her “a person of color” (amazing con), and would not have taken her

Thank you to the Cherokee Nation for revealing that Elizabeth Warren, sometimes referred to as Pocahontas, is a complete and total Fraud!

Jamal Khashoggi: Pressure grows on Saudis as US envoy meets king

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-45871364

Pressure is growing on Saudi Arabia to explain the fate of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, as US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met King Salman in Riyadh.

Mr Khashoggi was last seen at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul two weeks ago.

Turkish officials believe Mr Khashoggi was murdered by Saudi agents but the Saudis have denied this.

However, US media are reporting that the Saudis may be preparing to admit that Mr Khashoggi died as a result of an interrogation that went wrong.

Overnight, Turkish police completed a search of the consulate after being admitted by Saudi authorities.

The secretary of state and the king have now met in Riyadh.

While much of what was discussed during has yet to be announced, the US State Department said that Mr Pompeo had used the time to thank the king for his "commitment to a thorough, transparent investigation" into Mr Khashoggi's disappearance.

Mr Pompeo was also expected to seek further clarification over a conversation between the king and President Donald Trump on Monday.

Trump sends Pompeo to Riyadh over Khashoggi; Saudis may blame official

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-andelman-khashoggi-commentary/commentary-will-khashoggi-case-bring-down-saudis-crown-prince-idUSKCN1MP2I2

ANKARA/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia is preparing to acknowledge the death of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in a botched interrogation, CNN and the New York Times said on Monday, after U.S. President Donald Trump speculated “rogue killers” may be responsible.

Citing two unidentified sources, CNN said on Monday that Saudi Arabia is preparing a report that would acknowledge Khashoggi was killed as the result of an interrogation that went wrong. The Saudi government could not be reached immediately for comment on the CNN report.

“I heard that report, but nobody knows if it’s an official report,” Trump told reporters, without elaborating.

The New York Times, citing a person familiar with the Saudi plans, reported the crown prince had approved an interrogation or rendition of Khashoggi back to Saudi Arabia. The Saudi government, it said, would shield the prince by blaming an intelligence official for the bungled operation.
