Catalonia's Carles Puigdemont hands over leadership baton

Speaking in Berlin, former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont on Thursday announced his decision to renounce leadership of the region's legislature. He tapped Catalan lawmaker Quim Torra to take the helm, urging parliament to confirm him as regional president.

Italy's populists make 'significant steps' towards coalition government

The left-wing Five Star Movement (M5S) and the far-right League, two of Italy's biggest anti-establishment parties, on Thursday said they had made "significant steps" towards forming a coalition government.
Italy has been in a political deadlock since inconclusive elections in March. But the two parties made a breakthrough on Wednesday, when former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said he wouldn't prevent the two parties from forming a government.
But the Italian president, Sergio Mattarella, warned both euroskeptic parties against undermining the country's status in the EU, saying they would be "consciously tricking public opinion" by suggesting Italy could get on without the bloc. Both parties want to exit the eurozone and renegotiate EU budgetary restrictions.

Two Sabah Umno assemblyman – Datuk Abdul Muis Picho (Sebatik) and Datuk Hamisah Samat (Tanjong Batu) – arrived at 12.15pm Friday (May 11) at the Taman Golf View residence of Parti Warisan Sabah president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.
The two are believed to be keen to defect to Warisan while sources indicate that three of the five assemblymen who purportedly “defected” are still with party president Datuk Seri Madius Tangau, whose party, with five assemblyman, left Barisan on Thursday (May 10).
The potential movement will reduce Musa’s 31-seat simple majority to 26 seats as anticipation grows that more Umno and PBS assemblymen are expected to cross the floor by the day’s end.

The FCC in December repealed the Obama-era open-internet rules set in 2015, which bars providers from blocking or slowing down access to content or charging consumers more for certain content.
The prior rules were intended to ensure a free and open internet, give consumers equal access to web content and bar broadband service providers from favoring their own material or others.
The new rules require internet providers to tell consumers whether they will block or slow content or offer paid “fast lanes.”

The adviser would be appointed to “restart the 1MDB probe and bring back the money”, said one of the sources, who worked closely with Mahathir’s campaign team. The second source, a lawmaker, said the announcement could come as soon as Saturday when Mahathir is expected to name members of his new cabinet.
Mahathir had vowed to investigate the scandal if elected and bring missing funds back to Malaysia. On Thursday, he said that if Najib had done anything wrong he would “face the consequences”.

Iraq’s three main ethnic and religious groups, the majority Shi’ite Arabs and the minority Sunni Arabs and Kurds, have been at loggerheads for decades and the sectarian rifts are as apparent as ever 15 years after the fall of Saddam Hussein.
The election of a new prime minister and parliament also takes place the same week U.S. President Donald Trump announced he was pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal, raising tensions between Iraq’s two main allies: Tehran and Washington.
Whoever wins the May 12 election will face the challenge of rebuilding Iraq after four years of war with Islamic State, jump-starting a flagging economy, balancing the interests of powerful foreign patrons and maintaining the country’s fragile unity in the face of sectarian and separatist tensions.
