“I wouldn’t agree that the backlash was widespread” defended Bloys, “The people who love it (the series) really love it, even the people who dislike it feel the need to discuss it and talk about it, and let you know they dislike it, and debate. And for a show to arouse that kind of feeling, that’s what we want.”

After HBO dropped the first five episodes to critics, Bloys says, “Most of the reviews felt that the story had been clarified. It’s not for casual viewers (the show), it requires your attention. Jonah and Lisa like to challenge their viewers and many feel rewarded by that. It’s a unique show and that’s what we’re looking for.”

Game of Thrones final season to air in 'first half' of 2019, while prequel won’t start shooting until 2019

The network has said the final six episodes will air in “2019” for a long while. Now HBO’s programming president Casey Bloys says: “First half” of 2019.

Plus, more GoT timeline news. Remember all those recent reports that the Game of Thrones prequel by showrunner Jane Goldman will start shooting in October?

Yeah, not true.
Many outlets picked up a report by the Belfast Telegraph saying the show would start shooting in just a few months.
That seemed rather suspect to us because the show hasn’t even been cast yet.
Now Bloys confirms the show won’t start shooting until early 2019. He noted the project is still searching for a director, let alone cast.

“I don’t know where that report came from, we’re hoping to go into production in early ’19,” Bloys said.

Bloys used the TCA platform to clarify. “There are no plans to dilute the HBO brand in favor of volume of programming — no one has come to us to ask us to not do what we do, which is curate excellence,” he said, noting that the type of programming that HBO produces will not change. “What I heard in meeting with John is someone investing in programing which is music to our ears. One of our challenges in the past couple years working for Time Warner is that it was a corporate entity preparing itself for sale instead of one investing."

Bloys’ comments came less than 24 hours after Stankey had used another platform, AT&T’s second-quarter earnings call, to address the swirl of critical press. Although Stankey gave the subject considerably less airtime, he, too, noted that the reports had not “effectively characterized what we are about.” Although he failed to elaborate, he reiterated his plan to invest in HBO’s output to grow its subscriber base and combat churn. “[HBO has] not been in a position to say yes ... because of constraints on certain resources," he said. "And we’re attempting to open up those constraints on high-quality top projects.”

Like Stankey, Bloys offered no specifics on the size and scale of the planned budgetary or output increase. Instead, he noted that he and his boss, HBO CEO Richard Plepler, still need to figure out how they intend to do more without losing the hands-on approach or personal touch for which their brand is known. “We may need more staff but I don’t want to change our culture in any way,” Bloys added. “I don’t want it to feel like a factory.”

Venice to Debut a Record Six Netflix Projects

Alfonso Cuaron returns to the Lido with autobiographically inspired epic ROMA in competition.

Paul Greengrass will debut 22 July in competition. The film recounts the right-wing terrorist attacks of a lone wolf in Norway, which resulted in 77 deaths.

And the Coen Brothers' first-ever digitally shot project The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is an anthology Western starring Tim Blake Nelson, Zoe Kazan, Liam Neeson and Tom Waits. It will also premiere in competition.

Alessio Cremonini's On My Skin will compete in the Horizons sidebar as the opening film. Starring Alessandro Borghi, Max Tortora and Jasmine Trinca, the film tells the horrific true story of Stefano Cucchi, a man who died in Italian police custody.

Netflix will also debut the hotly awaited final project of Orson Welles, The Other Side of the Wind, nearly 50 years after it began production in a special event at the festival.

The event will be accompanied by Netflix documentary They'll Love Me When I'm Dead, directed by Morgan Neville, about Welles and the journey behind his final film.
