FX is going big for its next limited series.
The cable network has greenlighted Fosse/Verdon, an eight-episode project from Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda starring Oscar winner Sam Rockwell and four-time Academy Award nominee Michelle Williams. The series marks a major swing for FX after the cable network's top producer — Ryan Murphy — exited his overall deal with corporate sibling 20th Century Fox TV for a $300 million pact with Netflix.
Based on Sam Wasson's Fosse biography, the project tells the story of the romantic and creative partnership between Bob Fosse (Rockwell) and Gwen Verdon (Williams). He was a filmmaker and one of theater's most influential choreographers and directors; she was the greatest Broadway dancer of all time. Together, they changed the face of American entertainment — at a perilous cost. The series will feature Fosse's choreography and explore the hidden corners of showbiz, the price of pursuing greatness and the suffering inflicted in the name of art.
Steven Levenson (Dear Evan Hansen) will serve as showrunner and penned the pilot episode, which will be directed by Hamilton's Thomas Kail. Kail, Levenson, Miranda, Rockwell, Williams and George Stelzner will executive produce the series, which is a co-production between Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions. Actress, dancer and producer Nicole Fosse, the daughter of Fosse and Verdon, will serve as co-exec producer and will oversee for The Verdon Fosse Legacy. Andy Blankenbuehler will co-produce. Production is set to begin this fall for a 2019 debut.

AT&T leaders have been promising for months to increase content spending at HBO to give it a boost in the premium content wars. That money is finally starting to flow into HBO’s coffers in order to greenlight projects that have long been in development, according to WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey.
Speaking on AT&T’s second-quarter earnings call Tuesday — AT&T’s first earnings since closing its acquisition of Time Warner last month — Stankey said the goal was to give HBO more programming to drive more subscriber engagement and reduce churn. He noted that data mined from HBO’s digital platforms indicates that some viewers drop in and out of their subscription to HBO depending on the shows are airing fresh episodes at any given time.
“We have a tremendous amount of great projects already in the funnel,” Stankey said. “They’ve not been in a position to say yes to because of constraints on certain resources. We’re attempting to open up those constraints on high-quality top projects.” The goal is to “balance out the schedule in way that creates a more engaging consumer experience over the course of the year,” he said.

In January 2017, it was announced that the Oscar-winning No Country for Old Men filmmakers would be making their first foray into television with Annapurna TV. The project was a Western anthology series called The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, and Annapurna teased “an innovative television and theatrical integrated approach.” Soon thereafter Netflix picked up distribution, and filming began as folks awaited this highly anticipated six-episode TV series to debut sometime in either late 2018 or 2019.
Well that’s not the case anymore. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs appeared on the lineup for the Venice Film Festival today, and Variety confirms that the project is now a movie, and it’s coming out this Oscar season.
