An official from an airline, who is a former captain of Jeju Air, noted in a call with CHOSUNBIZ on the 29th that “the failure of the landing gear to deploy could be a possibility of pilot error,” adding, “There are ways to lower the landing gear even if the engine fails due to a collision with a flock of birds.”
The official stated, “The landing gear system operates when the lever is pulled in the cockpit, activating the hydraulic system to deploy the gear. Even if the hydraulic system fails, there is a mechanism in place to lower the landing gear using gravity.” They added, “The Boeing 737-800 involved in the accident has no door blocking the landing gear, making it easier to lower with gravity.”
He explained, “If the landing gear fails, the aircraft first informs the control tower of the situation, and the tower contacts the fire department. Fire trucks then spray foam on the runway to ensure that the aircraft does not catch fire during an emergency landing.” He continued, “Attempting to land before the foam was applied can also be seen as an error.”
