Instead, writers need to create the groundwork for much of what’s to follow without losing the momentum with which they exited the pilot. A few series have pulled off second episodes stronger than their very strong pilots—The Americans and Breaking Bad come to mind—and now The Handmaid’s Tale joins that group.
