Five months after picking up the Silicon Valley drama to pilot, the John Landgraf-led cable network has handed out an eight-episode limited series order for the project. Additionally, FX on Friday announced that Sonoya Mizuno (Ex Machina, Maniac, Crazy Rich Asians) will take on the lead role. The casting reunites her with Garland after the duo worked together on Ex Machina. Nick Offerman, Jin Ha, Zach Grenier, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny and Alison Pill round out the cast.

Devs revolves around a young computer engineer, Lily Chan (Mizuno), who investigates the secretive development division of her employer, a cutting-edge tech company based in San Francisco, which she believes is behind the murder of her boyfriend.

"After reading all eight scripts and hearing Alex’s brilliant vision and commitment to direct all of the episodes, it was an easy decision to order Devs to series," Landgraf said. "Alex is a visionary artist who with his partners has put together a stellar cast. We are grateful to Alex, Andrew, Allon, Scott, Eli and the brilliant casting team led by Carmen Cuba."

Devs arrives after Annihilation bowed to strong reviews and solid box-office returns. (The Hollywood Reporter called the Natalie Portman starrer "scary and beautiful.") Garland earned an Oscar nomination for writing the original screenplay for 2015's Ex Machina. He earned a DGA Award for a first-time feature director for Ex Machina as well as three BAFTA nominations, including for best feature. Since the publication of his first novel The Beach, Garland has worked in film, books and video games. Devs is his first TV series. His credits also include 28 Days Later, Sunshine, Never Let Me Go and Dredd.

Fargo season 4 to star Chris Rock, make major changes

Chris Rock will star in the fourth season of Fargo, which is making some rather dramatic storytelling changes for the next edition — including seemingly ditching Minnesota (oh jeez!).

Fargo season 4 will shift the start of the action from the rural upper Midwest (the setting of the first three seasons) to Kansas City, Mo., plus go further back in time than ever before (so no, Rock probably won’t have a Minnesota accent).

Here’s the description: “In 1950, at the end of two great American migrations — that of Southern Europeans from countries like Italy, who came to the US at the turn of the last century and settled in northern cities like New York, Chicago — and African Americans who left the south in great numbers to escape Jim Crow and moved to those same cities — you saw a collision of outsiders, all fighting for a piece of the American dream. In Kansas City, Missouri, two criminal syndicates have struck an uneasy peace. One Italian, one African American. Together they control an alternate economy — that of exploitation, graft and drugs. This too is the history of America. To cement their peace, the heads of both families have traded their eldest sons.

Chris Rock plays the head of one family, a man who — in order to prosper — has surrendered his oldest boy to his enemy, and who must in turn raise his son’s enemy as his own. It’s an uneasy peace, but profitable. And then the head of the Kansas City mafia goes into the hospital for routine surgery and dies. And everything changes. It’s a story of immigration and assimilation, and the things we do for money. And as always, a story of basically decent people who are probably in over their heads. You know, Fargo.”

Fargo season 4 has no other cast or release date yet, though will start production next year (so late 2019 or early 2020 seems likely).

FX just ordered a project that it’s calling its largest production to date: An adaptation of James Clavell’s epic best-selling novel Shōgun.

The production team includes Tim Van Patten (Sopranos and the Game of Thrones pilot) who will direct multiple episodes, Eugene Kelly (Westworld) and Ronan Bennett (Public Enemies) who will write the series, and producers Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, Michael De Luca, and Michaela Clavell.

Shōgun, set in feudal Japan, “charts the collision of two ambitious men from different worlds and a mysterious female samurai: John Blackthorne, a risk-taking English sailor who ends up shipwrecked in Japan, a land whose unfamiliar culture will ultimately redefine him; Lord Toranaga, a shrewd, powerful daimyo, at odds with his own dangerous, political rivals; and Lady Mariko, a woman with invaluable skills but dishonorable family ties, who must prove her value and allegiance.”

The miniseries will consist of 10 episodes. The novel Shōgun was published in 1975 and has since sold 30 million copies worldwide. There’s no cast or release date yet.

FX scraps plan for Feud Charles and Diana sequel (for now)
'American Crime Story: Katrina' also delayed amid script changes

FX is scrapping its plan for a Prince Charles and Lady Diana edition of its Feud limited series — at least for now.
While the Feud brand is still technically considered in development, writers were unable to crack a version of the story for the previously announced sequel to 2017’s Feud: Bette and Joan.

“It’s not moving forward at the moment,” FX chief John Landgraf told EW at the Television Critics Assn. press tour in Beverly Hills on Friday.

The comments come as Feud executive producer Ryan Murphy shifts his attention to making shows for Netflix where he recently landed a production deal worth $300 million.

We also asked Landgraf if Feud was still even a series or basically canceled at this point.
“I’d say if you asked Ryan, he would still say it’s an active series and he’s still intending to do further cycles,” Landgraf said. “But he hasn’t told me ‘this is the cycle I’m doing and this is when I’m doing it.'”

American Crime Story: Katrina is also delayed amid script changes.

“We went back to square one and started over,” Landgraf said. “My understanding is [producers] have seen scripts but they haven’t given them to me yet. So much of it is right now is Ryan. He kind of sets his own timetable. I’m quite certain American Horror Story and Pose are on an annual cycle. With Crime Story and Feud they’re on a cycle of when the material is good enough and when is Ryan willing and able to slot that into his schedule. So I think there will be more cycles, but I’m not really in control of that.”

FX had already cast the series — Matthew Goode (Downton Abbey, The Good Wife) and Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) were rumored to be taking on the roles of Charles and Diana — but Landgraf said it ultimately was the material that caused his network to pump the brakes on the sequel to Feud: Bette and Joan.

"We did [have it cast] but we decided we didn't feel we had the material right and decided not to move forward with it," Landgraf told THR.
