Beaconism and the Trumpian Metamorphosis of Chinese Liberal Intellectuals
https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3538736
Abstract
This paper examines the puzzling phenomenon that many Chinese liberal intellectuals fervently idolize Donald Trump and embrace the alt-right ideologies he epitomizes. Rejecting ‘pure tactics’ and ‘neoliberal affinity’ explanations, I argue that the Trumpian metamorphosis of Chinese liberal intellectuals is precipitated by their ‘beacon complex’, which has ‘political’ and ‘civilizational’ components. Political beaconism grows from the traumatizing lived experience of Maoist totalitarianism, sanitizes the West and particularly the United States as politically near-perfect, and gives rise to both a neoliberal affinity and a latent hostility toward baizuo. Civilizational beaconism, sharing with its nationalistic counterpart – civilizational vindicativism – the heritages of scientific racism and social Darwinism imported in late-Qing, renders the Chinese liberal intelligentsia receptive to anti-immigrant and Islamophobic paranoia, exacerbates its anti-baizuo sentiments, and catalyzes its Trumpian convergence with Chinese non-liberals.

Live Updates Ahead of Tonight’s Democratic Debate in South Carolina
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/25/us/politics/democratic-debate-tonight-time.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage

The South Carolina primary, where 54 delegates are at stake, is on Saturday.

Last week’s debate in Las Vegas was the fiercest yet as candidates took more personal swipes at one another. With the addition of Michael R. Bloomberg, that debate set a TV ratings record.

Seven Democratic candidates qualified for the debate on Tuesday: former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr.; Mr. Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York City; former Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Ind.; Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota; Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont; Tom Steyer, a billionaire businessman; and Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.

The moderators are Norah O’Donnell and Gayle King. Margaret Brennan of “Face the Nation,” Major Garrett and Bill Whitaker of “60 Minutes” will join in with questions.

Sanders mocks Trump's coronavirus response: This "great scientist" says it will end in April
https://www.axios.com/democratic-debate-sanders-trump-coronavirus-f5dce8a8-3f2f-4e45-bc5a-9e3bd1d35ff0.html

Sen. Bernie Sanders mocked President Trump's response to the novel coronavirus Tuesday at the Democratic debate.

What they're saying:

" In the White House today, we have a self-described great genius — self-described — and this great genius has told us that this coronavirus is going to end in two months. April is the magical date that this great scientist we have in the White House has determined — I wish I was kidding, that is what he said."
— Sanders
Sanders added: "Obviously, we have to make sure the the [Centers for Disease Control], the [National Institutes of Health], our infectious departments, are fully funded."
The big picture: The CDC has warned that it expects the further spread of coronavirus within the United States. As of Tuesday, 57 Americans have been diagnosed with novel coronavirus. The rise in cases has been recently driven by infections from the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan.

Sanders roughed up, hits back at Democratic presidential debate

Democratic White House hopefuls rounded on leftist frontrunner Bernie Sanders at a feisty debate Tuesday, attacking him as too extreme for American voters and a flawed challenger to President Donald Trump.

Joe Biden, who needs a victory in South Carolina's crucial primary on Saturday to keep his campaign alive, hit Sanders as soft on gun control, while billionaire tycoon Michael Bloomberg claimed Russia was working to help Sanders win the nomination -- betting he would be defeated in November.

And Sanders' rivals joined in savaging the self-described democratic socialist as too radical to appeal to a broad swathe of Americans.

Fellow progressive Elizabeth Warren and centrists Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar, all desperate to halt Sanders' momentum before it is too late, laid into his ability to deliver on costly programs like universal health care and tuition-free college.

"I tell you what it adds up to," Buttigieg said, "it ends up as four more years of Donald Trump."

Sanders is in pole position in South Carolina, the last step before "Super Tuesday" March 3 when 14 states vote and a whopping one third of all delegates -- the representatives who pick the nominee at the Democratic Party's July convention -- are up for grabs.

The 78-year-old hit back at the charge his policies were too "radical," insisting such ideas "exist in countries all over the world," including the notion that health care is a human right.

"The way we beat Trump, which is what everybody up here wants, is we need a campaign of energy and excitement," Sanders said.

"We need to bring working people back in to the Democratic Party."

Talking over one another in often contentious exchanges, the seven candidates on stage aggressively vied for attention, locking horns on everything from housing to China policy and whether or not to move the US embassy from Jerusalem back to Tel Aviv.

Pete Buttigieg, a 38-year-old military veteran presenting himself as a unifier, warned a Sanders fight against Trump would spell "chaos" and divide the nation
Seeking to prove he is still in the fight, the 77-year-old Biden put in a spirited performance and snapped back at moderators who tried to cut him off, telling them: "I'm not going to be quiet anymore, OK?"

The former vice president aimed a sharp attack at Sanders over gun control, an issue largely absent from previous debates, and a significant weakness for the Vermont senator who voted against legislation that would have allowed lawsuits against gun manufacturers.

Sanders had emerged largely unscathed from the previous debate. But he acknowledged he was now in the firing line, with rivals seeking to derail his push for the nomination following two straight victories, in New Hampshire and then Nevada.

"I'm hearing my name mentioned a little bit tonight," he said to laughter. "I wonder why."

Piling on, Klobuchar hammered Sanders's plans as "broken promises that sound good on bumper stickers," while billionaire activist Tom Steyer accused him of planning "a government takeover of large parts of the economy."

Like Buttigieg, Bloomberg sought to cast a Sanders nomination as a sure path to losing.

"Vladimir Putin thinks that Donald Trump should be president of the United States, and that's why Russia is helping you get elected so you'll lose to him," the former New York mayor told Sanders in a heated opening exchange.

"I'm the one choice that makes some sense," said Bloomberg, touting his experience running America's largest city for 12 years -- a point hammered home in lavish televised ads during multiple commercial breaks.

- Bloomberg, Biden seek rebound -

But the 78-year-old found himself under assault too, including by Warren who called him "the riskiest candidate" on stage.

"I don't care how much money mayor Bloomberg has. The core of the Democratic Party will never trust him," Warren said. "He has not earned their trust. I will."

Bloomberg jumped late into the race, and has not been on the ballot in the four early states, opting instead to make a splash on Super Tuesday. He has now spent more than $500 million on campaign advertising.

Rival centrist Biden desperately needs a win after dismal showings in Iowa and New Hampshire, and a disappointing result in Nevada where he won 20.2 percent, well behind Sanders' 46.8 percent.

Biden has been counting on strong support among black voters in South Carolina to recharge his flagging campaign -- earning cheers at one point when he promised to put a female black justice on the Supreme Court if elected.

Pressed on whether he would throw in the towel if he falls short on Saturday, Biden stood defiant, saying: "I will win South Carolina."

Syria war: 29 Turkish troops killed in air strike in Idlib

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-51667717

At least 29 Turkish soldiers have been killed in an air strike by Syrian "regime forces" in north-western Syria, a senior Turkish official has said.

More were hurt in Idlib province, said Rahmi Dogan, the governor of Turkey's Hatay province. Other reports put the death toll higher.

Turkey is now retaliating against Syrian troops government targets.

Syrian forces supported by Russia are trying to retake Idlib from rebels who are backed by Turkish soldiers.

The Syrian authorities have so far made no public comments on the latest escalation in Idlib, the last Syrian province to remain in opposition hands.

The Turkish military began hitting back at the Syrian targets after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held an urgent top-level security meeting in Ankara.

Syria war: Turkey lets refugees exit towards Europe

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-51678462

Groups of refugees and migrants are heading towards the EU after Turkey said it would not abide by a deal to stop them reaching Europe.

Turkey's communications chief said the country had not received enough support in hosting millions of Syrian refugees.

Its decision followed a deadly attack on Turkish troops by Syrian government forces in northern Syria.

The incident sparked fears of a major escalation involving Turkey and Syria's military ally, Russia.

Greece and Bulgaria - which border Turkey - have sent reinforcements to prevent people entering. Greek police have been deterring attempts to cross the border with tear gas, reports say.

At least 33 Turkish soldiers were killed in a bombardment in Idlib, the last Syrian province where Syrian rebel groups hold significant territory.

Syrian government forces, supported by Russia, have been trying to retake Idlib from jihadist groups and Turkish-backed rebel factions.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-51689443

The US and the Taliban have signed an agreement aimed at paving the way towards peace in Afghanistan after more than 18 years of conflict.

The US and its Nato allies have agreed to withdraw all their troops from the country within 14 months if the militants uphold the deal.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Taliban leaders attended the signing ceremony in Doha in Qatar.

Talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban are due to follow.

Under the agreement signed in Doha, the militants agreed to stop attacks and not allow al-Qaeda to operate in the areas they control.

Joe Biden got his South Carolina comeback. Will it be enough?

The former vice president’s decisive victory on Saturday, his first in the Democratic nominating contests for the Nov. 3 election, allows him to more credibly claim that he is the leading alternative to front-runner Bernie Sanders.

But Biden faces significant hurdles. He has just two days to capitalize on the win ahead of Super Tuesday, when 14 states hold contests and more than a third of Democratic delegates are awarded.

His cash-strapped campaign has been unable to advertise heavily in delegate-rich states such as California, Texas, North Carolina and Virginia, which vote on Tuesday. Nor has he been able to compete with the ground-level operations established by Sanders and billionaire former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Instead, Biden will count on a flurry of new media attention - coupled with high name recognition as the No. 2 to Barack Obama, the first black U.S. president - to power his bid for the party’s nomination to challenge Republican President Donald Trump.

With his new momentum, Biden hopes to boost his delegate haul from the Southern states in Tuesday’s voting to counter Sanders, whose grassroots army and extensive outreach to Hispanic communities could give him a boost in Texas and California.

Six of the states voting on Tuesday are in the South, which like South Carolina have a more diverse population than the voting states where Biden fared poorly. Exit poll data showed he won the support from 61% of black voters in South Carolina, far surpassing Sanders’ 17%.

Biden also will finally go head-to-head with Bloomberg, who skipped the early states and has spent more than $500 million on advertising in a bid to become the Democrats’ moderate standard-bearer.

Biden and an outside group that supports him have spent $16.5 million, according to the Wesleyan Media Project.

“We don’t have as many resources as Mr. Bloomberg, but we believe that we’ve done our work and frankly we do believe that the momentum from this week will help propel us into Super Tuesday,” said Biden adviser Symone Sanders.

Biden’s struggles in the first two nominating contests in Iowa and New Hampshire made South Carolina so critical that he was unable to campaign elsewhere. A trip to North Carolina on Saturday was his first to that state since October.

By contrast, Sanders, who won New Hampshire and Nevada, was able to campaign in places such as Colorado and Texas.

At Biden’s victory party on Saturday, Representative James Clyburn of South Carolina, whose last-minute endorsement gave Biden a heady boost, said the Biden campaign needed to improve its fundraising efforts.

“We all have to sit down and get serious about how we retool this campaign,” he told CNN on Saturday. “I’m not going to sit back idly and watch people mishandle this campaign.”

Buttigieg to suspend his campaign for president: campaign aide
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-buttigieg/buttigieg-to-suspend-his-campaign-for-president-campaign-aide-idUSKBN20O2F3

DETROIT (Reuters) - Former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg will suspend his campaign for president on Sunday night, a campaign aide said, following his fourth-place finish in the South Carolina Democratic primary easily won by fellow moderate Joe Biden.

Buttigieg’s withdrawal could help Biden, a one-time national Democratic front-runner whose much-needed victory in South Carolina on Saturday gave him momentum heading into the 14-state Super Tuesday nominating contests this week.

“Pete is heading back to South Bend and will give a speech tonight suspending his campaign,” the campaign aide told Reuters.

Buttigieg, a 38-year-old Afghanistan war veteran who would have been the first openly gay U.S. president, had sought to unite Democrats, independents and moderate Republican voters, arguing that his status as a Washington outsider could rebuild the majority needed to defeat Republican President Donald Trump in November’s election.

He entered the race as a relative unknown on the national stage, with two terms as mayor of a small Midwestern city as the chief item on his political resume. But his campaign invested heavily in rural and Trump-leaning counties in Iowa in the hope that a win in its first Democratic nominating contest would give him a boost in states to come.

He did just that, pulling out a narrow victory in Iowa over Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and surprising many in the Democratic establishment with a close second-place finish in New Hampshire.

But Buttigieg’s tenure as mayor, which ended on Jan. 1, came under persistent scrutiny for a lack of diversity on the city’s police force and a fatal shooting of a black resident by a police officer.

He struggled to maintain momentum as the pace of the contests accelerated through demographically diverse Nevada and South Carolina, and he lacked the national profile and long-standing relationships with the black community that helped Biden win South Carolina.
