Pentagon says 34 US soldiers suffered traumatic brain injury in Iran strike
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jan/24/us-soldiers-iran-traumatic-brain-injury-pentagon

Thirty-four US soldiers have been diagnosed with concussion or traumatic brain injury from an 8 January Iranian missile attack on their base in Iraq, the Pentagon has revealed.

The Pentagon spokesman, Jonathan Hoffman, said on Friday that eight service members who had been previously transported to Germany had been moved to the United States.

Donald Trump had previously said that the US “suffered no casualties” from the attack, which was a reprisal for the US drone strike assassination of the Iranian general Qassem Suleimani.

Questioned later about reports of brain injury, Trump downplayed their severity: “I heard that they had headaches. And a couple of other things. But I would say, and I can report, it is not very serious.”

But Hoffman confirmed the injuries on Friday, adding: “This is a snapshot in time, what he wanted to make sure is that you’re provided with the most accurate numbers.”

Trump speaks with Boris Johnson about security as Britain nears Huawei decision
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2020/jan/25/trump-speaks-with-boris-johnson-about-security-as-britain-nears-huawei-decision

Donald Trump discussed the security of telecommunications networks with Boris Johnson, the White House said, as Britain closes in on a decision on Huawei’s role in the country’s future 5G network.

“The two leaders discussed important regional and bilateral issues, including working together to ensure the security of our telecommunications networks,” the White House said in a statement on Friday about the phone call.

Britain is expected to make a final call next week on how to deploy Huawei equipment in its future 5G networks. The United States has voiced significant concerns about the Chinese telecoms behemoth, which Washington fears could compromise British secrets.

Huawei, the world’s biggest producer of telecoms equipment, denies it is a vehicle for Chinese intelligence.

British officials have proposed granting Huawei a limited role in its 5G network, resisting US calls for a complete ban, said two people with knowledge of the matter.

Democrats focus on Ukraine 'cover-up' as marathon impeachment case wraps
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jan/24/trump-impeachment-trial-democrats-focus

Democrats concluded the presentation of their case against Donald Trump at his impeachment trial on Friday, with the lead prosecutor Adam Schiff calling on Republicans to exercise “moral courage” and vote in favor of calling witnesses at the trial next week.

“Give America a fair trial,” Schiff concluded after three marathon days of argument. “She’s worth it.”

Schiff’s finishing flourish came as Democrats pivoted earlier Friday from the president’s conduct to his attempted cover-up of an alleged scheme to withhold military aid and a White House meeting from Ukraine in pursuit of a political favor.

The White House, Democrats said, tried to hide records of a call Trump had with the Ukrainian president and tried to stop a whistleblower complaint reaching Congress, before Trump demanded federal agencies and employees stonewall the impeachment inquiry.

“He tried to cheat, he got caught and then he worked hard to cover it up,” said the New Yorker Hakeem Jeffries, one of the House “managers” prosecuting the case.

Rockets hit US embassy in Baghdad amid protests

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-51259295

At least three rockets struck the US embassy in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on Sunday.

One rocket hit the embassy cafeteria while two others landed a short distance away, a source told AFP.

At least three people were injured, security sources told Reuters. This would be the first time in years that staff have been hurt in such attacks.

No group has claimed responsibility but the US has blamed Iran-backed military factions in Iraq in the past.

Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi condemned the attack, stating that the continuation of such acts could "drag Iraq into becoming a battlefield".

The US State Department said: "We call on the Government of Iraq to fulfil its obligations to protect our diplomatic facilities."

Salvini faces setback in Italian regional election

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-51259290

Italy's far-right firebrand Matteo Salvini is facing a setback after his League Party looks set to be beaten by the centre-left Democratic Party (PD) in a closely watched election in the country's north.

The left has governed Emilia-Romagna since the end of World War Two.

Mr Salvini focused on the area ahead of Sunday's local election.

But an exit poll for state television is showing a narrow win for the PD, taking between 49% and 51% of the vote.

Mr Salvini's League looked on course to take 43% to 45%. Final results are expected in the early hours of Monday.

The election had been seen as a test of the national coalition government, in which the populist Five Star Movement joined forces with the PD after Mr Salvini pulled his party out of office in what was seen as a tactical blunder.

But Mr Salvini's anti-immigration party failed to take the long-time leftist stronghold.

Peru Congress vote: Election follows September dissolution

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-51208274

Peruvians have been voting to elect a new Congress after the previous one was dissolved by President Martín Vizcarra.

Mr Vizcarra took the drastic step in September, arguing that lawmakers were obstructing his anti-corruption agenda.

Exit polls suggested the new Congress will be fragmented with the biggest party Popular Action, gaining less than 12% of the vote.

The exit polls also indicate Popular Force, which was the dominant party in the last Congress, gained only 7%.

Popular Front is led by Keiko Fujimori, the daughter of the disgraced former President Alberto Fujimori.

A judge is due to decide next week whether Mrs Fujimori returns to preventative custody while she faces corruption charges. She denies any wrong-doing.

The new Congress will be short-lived - it will be replaced in next year's general elections.

White House tells airlines it may suspend all China-US flights amid coronavirus outbreak
https://www.cnbc.com/2020/01/28/white-house-discussing-china-travel-restrictions-amid-coronavirus-outbreak.html

White House officials have told U.S. airlines the Trump administration is considering suspending flights from China to the U.S. amid an escalating outbreak of a new coronavirus that has infected thousands of people across the world, people familiar with the matter said.

The Trump administration is looking at a variety of measures to contain the fast-spreading virus, U.S. health officials told reporters on a conference call Tuesday.

White House officials called executives at major U.S. carriers on Tuesday, telling them that a temporary ban on China flights is on the table, according to people familiar with those conversations.

As of Tuesday evening, the Trump administration had not taken that step and there was no guarantee that it would do so.

Two of the people said the White House told them it doesn’t immediately plan to ban China air travel, but administration officials are constantly evaluating the situation.

Trump’s Defense Team Discounts Bolton as Republicans Work to Hold Off Witnesses
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/28/us/politics/trumps-defense-team-discounts-bolton-as-republicans-work-to-hold-off-witnesses.html?

WASHINGTON — President Trump’s defense team appealed to the Senate on Tuesday to disregard a new account by the former national security adviser John R. Bolton that bolsters the impeachment case against the president. But by day’s end, Republican leaders working feverishly to block testimony from Mr. Bolton or other witnesses indicated they had not yet corralled the votes to do so.

On the final day of arguments on Mr. Trump’s behalf, Jay Sekulow, one of the president’s private lawyers, sought to raise doubts about Mr. Bolton’s claim in an unpublished manuscript that Mr. Trump tied the release of military aid to Ukraine to investigations into his political rivals, calling it an “unsourced allegation” that was “inadmissible” in his impeachment trial.

Just after Mr. Trump’s team ended a three-day legal defense, Republican senators rushed into a private meeting room in the Capitol, where Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the majority leader, worked to herd his rank and file in line behind ending the trial without witnesses.

He carried a card that bore a tally of Republican votes on the question, and warned that he did not yet have enough to block an expected Democratic move to call witnesses because some Republicans remained uncommitted, according to people familiar with the meeting who were not authorized to discuss it publicly.

“It was a serious family discussion,” Senator Kevin Cramer, Republican of North Dakota, told reporters as he emerged from the senators-only meeting in the Strom Thurmond Room. “Some people are sincerely exploring all the avenues.”

But behind the scenes, key Republicans said they were increasingly confident they could bring the trial to an end, and they described Mr. McConnell’s comments as a pointed signal that it was time for rank-and-file senators to fall in line.

Huawei set for limited role in UK 5G networks

https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-51283059

The UK has decided to let Huawei continue to be used in its 5G networks but with restrictions, despite pressure from the US to block the firm.

The Chinese firm will be banned from supplying kit to "sensitive parts" of the network, known as the core.

In addition, it will only be allowed to account for 35% of the kit in a network's periphery, which includes radio masts.

And it will be excluded from areas near military bases and nuclear sites.

"Huawei is reassured by the UK government's confirmation that we can continue working with our customers to keep the 5G rollout on track," the firm's UK chief Victor Zhang said in a statement.

"It gives the UK access to world-leading technology and ensures a competitive market."

The Prime Minister had faced pressure from the US and some Conservative MPs to block the Chinese tech giant on the grounds of national security.

A Trump administration official has said the US "is disappointed" with the decision.

Netanyahu indicted in court on corruption charges after dropping immunity bid
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-51277429

Israel's attorney general has filed a formal indictment in court against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

It came after Mr Netanyahu withdrew a request for parliamentary immunity from prosecution on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust in connection with three separate cases.

He has denied any wrongdoing.

The Israeli parliament had been due to open a debate on the immunity request on Tuesday. But Mr Netanyahu said he would not have got a fair hearing.

He also criticised opponents for going ahead with the debate when US President Donald Trump was due to unveil his long-awaited Middle East peace plan.

On Wednesday, Mr Netanyahu will fly to Moscow to brief Russian President Vladimir Putin on the plan, Israeli officials said.

Trump releases long-awaited Middle-East peace plan

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-51288218

US President Donald Trump has presented his long-awaited Middle East peace plan, promising to keep Jerusalem as Israel's undivided capital.

He proposed an independent Palestinian state and the recognition of Israeli sovereignty over West Bank settlements.

Standing alongside Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, Mr Trump said his proposals "could be the last opportunity" for Palestinians.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas dismissed the plans as a "conspiracy".

"I say to Trump and Netanyahu: Jerusalem is not for sale, all our rights are not for sale and are not for bargain. And your deal, the conspiracy, will not pass," he said in a televised address from Ramallah in the West Bank.

The blueprint, which aims to solve one of the world's longest-running conflicts, was drafted under the stewardship of President Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Brexit: UK leaves the European Union

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-51333314

The UK has officially left the European Union after 47 years of membership - and more than three years after it voted to do so in a referendum.

The historic moment, which happened at 23:00 GMT, was marked by both celebrations and anti-Brexit protests.

Candlelit vigils were held in Scotland, which voted to stay in the EU, while Brexiteers partied in London's Parliament Square.

Boris Johnson has vowed to bring the country together and "take us forward".

In a message released on social media an hour before the UK's departure, the prime minister said: "For many people this is an astonishing moment of hope, a moment they thought would never come.

"And there are many of course who feel a sense of anxiety and loss.

"And then of course there is a third group - perhaps the biggest - who had started to worry that the whole political wrangle would never come to an end.

"I understand all those feelings and our job as the government - my job - is to bring this country together now and take us forward."

Coronavirus: US bars foreigners who recently visited China

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-51335278

The US has declared a public health emergency over the spread of the coronavirus and said it would deny entry to any foreign nationals who have visited China in the past two weeks.

In a public statement on Friday, US Health Secretary Alex Azar said US citizens returning from Hubei province would face 14 days of quarantine while those returning from other parts of China would be allowed to monitor their own condition for a similar period.

"Following the World Health Organization decision, I have today declared that the coronavirus represents a public health emergency in the United States," he told reporters.

Citing the need to relieve pressure on authorities, he said that foreign nationals who had travelled in China in the past 14 days would be denied entry to the US.

"The risk of infection for Americans remains low and with these, and our previous, actions we are working to keep the risk low," he added.

Trump impeachment: Failed witnesses vote paves way for acquittal
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-51335661

US President Donald Trump is set to be acquitted in his impeachment trial after senators voted against calling witnesses or admitting new evidence.

Democrats hoped four swing Republicans would vote for witnesses, which would have extended the trial without in all likelihood changing its outcome.

In the end, only two of the four Republicans voted with Democrats.

The trial now moves forward to a vote on whether to acquit President Trump, which he is all but certain to win.

Senior members of President Trump's Republican Party pushed from the outset for a speedy trial with no witnesses or new evidence. Above all, they wanted to avoid senators hearing from former National Security Adviser John Bolton.

According to reporting by the New York Times, Mr Bolton writes in his forthcoming book that the president directly instructed him to withhold military aid from Ukraine in exchange for dirt on a Democratic political rival, Joe Biden.

Testimony from Mr Bolton about his involvement in the Ukraine affair threatened to significantly undermine the case made by the president's lawyers during his trial.

Trump was impeached on two charges - abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The first charge stemmed from an allegation that he pressured Ukraine to damage Mr Biden for his own political benefit. The second from an allegation that he purposefully obstructed the Congressional impeachment investigation.

Iraq protests: Mohammed Allawi named prime minister

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-51342053

Iraq has named a new prime minister after four months of protests.

Mohammed Tawfiq Allawi, a former communications minister, was appointed by President Barham Salih.

His predecessor Adel Abdul Mahdi resigned in November, amid mass anti-government demonstrations. Hundreds of protesters have been killed.

Mr Allawi now has a month to form a new government, which he will lead until early elections. He immediately expressed support for the protests.

Earlier this week, local media reported that President Saleh had given parliament an ultimatum to decide on a new prime minister before he took the decision himself, after previous candidates were rejected by protesters.

Arab League rejects Trump's Israeli-Palestinian peace plan

https://www.dw.com/en/arab-league-rejects-trumps-israeli-palestinian-peace-plan/a-52225651

Arab foreign ministers meeting in Cairo, Egypt to discuss US President Donald Trump's plan to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which was formally announced last week, have rejected the proposal.

In a communique, the Arab League said it would not cooperate with the US to execute the plan because it "does not meet the minimum rights and aspirations of Palestinian people."

The pan-Arab bloc also said Israel should not implement the initiative by force.

The meeting at the Arab League headquarters came at the request of the Palestinians.

"The plan leads to a status that amounts to a one-state situation that comprises two classes of citizens, that is apartheid, in which the Palestinians will be second-class citizens, deprived of the basic rights of citizenship," Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said in Cairo.

Iowa caucuses: Race to decide election candidates begins

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-51302248

The first event that will help decide the candidates for US president is to take place with Monday's Iowa caucuses.

Democratic and Republican voters will choose their preferred nominees for the White House race.

While victory in Iowa doesn't guarantee anyone the nomination, it can help give them crucial momentum.

The path appears clear for Donald Trump to be the Republican nominee, but there are still 11 people running for the Democratic nomination.

Polls suggest that Bernie Sanders has risen to be the favourite in Iowa (or - depending where you look - the joint-favourite, with former vice-president Joe Biden).

He is one of four senators running for president who have had to stay behind in Washington to attend Mr Trump's impeachment trial, but his supporters, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have been energetically campaigning on his behalf in Iowa.

Chaos at key Iowa vote as results delayed
https://www.bbc.com/news/live/world-us-canada-51351106

'The app crashed'

Iowa Democratic Party (IDP) officials say they "found inconsistencies in the reporting of three sets of results," but we're hearing something slightly different from local district officials.

An app that was planned for results posting has "crashed" says the chairman of Dallas County, forcing officials to wait in long call queues.

Every precinct official is forced to call in or email results, and some are sending volunteers to help the IDP tabulate results.

"It doesn't really work," says the Black Hawk County chairman. "No one can reach the state party to report."

This tallies with what one official in Warren County told our correspondent Gary O'Donoghue earlier: she sais she had given up trying to use the new results reporting app and was going to try and ring them in instead.

Iowa caucuses: Pete Buttigieg and Bernie Sanders take lead

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-51380686

Pete Buttigieg and Bernie Sanders are leading in Iowa's caucuses, according to partial results from the chaotic first vote in the race to pick a Democratic White House candidate.

Iowa's Democratic Party said data from 62% of precincts showed Mr Buttigieg on 26.9% with Mr Sanders on 25.1%.

Elizabeth Warren was third on 18.3% and Joe Biden fourth on 15.6%.

The eventual nominee will challenge President Donald Trump, a Republican, in November's White House election.

Amy Klobuchar was on 12.6%, and Andrew Yang on 1.1%, according to the other preliminary results released on Tuesday evening from all of Iowa's 99 counties. Tom Steyer and Tulsi Gabbard were on less than 1%.

But the state party has still not declared a winner from Monday's vote, which was derailed by technical malfunctions.

The results represent the share of delegates needed to clinch the party nomination under America's quirky political system. Iowa awards only 41 of the 1,991 delegates required to become the Democratic White House nominee.

But in the popular vote count, partial results showed Mr Sanders leading with 28,220 ballots, while Mr Buttigieg was second at 27,030.

Ms Warren was third with 22,254, followed by Mr Biden at 14,176 and Ms Klobuchar at 13,357.

Trump acquitted by Senate in impeachment trial

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-51394383

President Donald Trump has been found not guilty in his impeachment trial, ending a bid to remove him from office that bitterly divided the US.

The Senate, run by the president's fellow Republicans, voted to acquit him 52-48 on charges of abuse of power and 53-47 on obstruction of Congress.

Democrats charged Mr Trump in December with pressuring Ukraine to smear a potential White House rival.

He will now become the first impeached president to seek re-election.

Impeachment allows Congress - the part of the US government that writes and brings in laws - to put presidents on trial.

It is a rare event and a political process, rather than a criminal one.
