Trump trade war: Macron pushes for EU deals in China

https://www.dw.com/en/trump-trade-war-macron-pushes-for-eu-deals-in-china/a-51101055

French President Emmanuel Macron arrives in China Monday for a giant import expo, where he is expected to receive the "friendliest and warmest welcome," according to Chinese officials.

During his trip, he intends to lobby on behalf of European companies for greater access to Chinese markets. Macron is accompanied by German Education Minister Anja Karliczek and EU trade commissioner Phil Hogan in a sign of European unity on the matter.

"Since this fair is supposed to demonstrate China's openness, well, let's prove it with access to its agribusiness market and progress on the EU-China deals," said a French presidential advisor ahead of the trip.

The adviser said it is important to show unity "because we know how Europeans have moved to China without any coordination in the past, letting China think we were divided."

Election Day 2019: Voting Today in Virginia, Kentucky, Mississippi

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/05/us/politics/election-day-2019.html?

Kentucky and Mississippi will elect governors on Tuesday, with Democrats looking for upset victories in those two solidly Republican states.

In Virginia, voters will decide control of the state legislature, where Republicans have slim majorities in each chamber. If the G.O.P. loses, Virginia state government will be under full Democratic control.

Jeffrey Epstein: ABC stopped report 'amid Palace threats'

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-50296742

Leaked footage shows a US TV anchor complaining that editors "quashed" a story about paedophile Jeffrey Epstein due to pressure from the Royal Family.

ABC's Amy Robach is seen in the clip griping that her interview with an alleged victim of Epstein and Prince Andrew never made it to air.

"The Palace found out," she says, "and threatened us a million different ways."

An ABC news executive said there was "zero truth" to the assertion.

Epstein, a wealthy and well-connected financier, was found dead in a jail cell in August while awaiting trial for sex crimes. His death was ruled a suicide by investigators.

In the video, Ms Robach vents frustration that her 2015 interview with Virginia Giuffre - formerly Virginia Roberts - was never broadcast.

The clip was leaked on Tuesday by Project Veritas, a group that seeks to expose perceived liberal bias in the mainstream media.

Democrats claim victory in key Virginia and Kentucky elections

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-50311633

US Democrats have made gains in state elections, in what is being seen as a blow to President Donald Trump.

Democrat Andy Beshear claimed victory in Kentucky's governor vote, after a tight race in the conservative-leaning state.

Meanwhile, Democrats seized full control of the legislature in Virginia for the first time in over 20 years.

The results are being viewed as a gauge of the political mood ahead of next year's presidential election.

However, Republicans held on to power in the Mississippi governor vote, following a closely-fought race in the traditional Republican stronghold.

Trump impeachment hearings to go public next week

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-50323190

Congressional Democrats have announced the first public hearings next week in an inquiry that may seek to remove President Donald Trump from office.

Three state department officials will testify first. So far lawmakers from three key House committees have heard from witnesses behind closed doors.

The impeachment inquiry centres on claims that Mr Trump pressured Ukraine to publicly announce an investigation into political rival Joe Biden.

Mr Trump denies any abuse of power.

House Intelligence Committee chairman Adam Schiff, who is overseeing the inquiry, told reporters on Wednesday that an impeachment case was building against the president.

He said: "We are getting an increasing appreciation for just what took place during the course of the last year - and the degree to which the president enlisted whole departments of government in the illicit aim to get Ukraine to dig up dirt on a political opponent."

Exclusive: U.S.-China trade deal signing could be delayed to December; London a possible venue - source

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to sign a long-awaited interim trade deal could be delayed until December as discussions continue over terms and venue, a senior official of the Trump administration told Reuters on Wednesday.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said it was still possible the “phase one” agreement aimed at ending a damaging trade war would not be reached, but a deal was more likely than not.

Dozens of venues have been suggested for the meeting, which had originally been scheduled to take place on the sidelines of a now-canceled mid-November summit of Asia-Pacific leaders in Chile, the official said.

One possible location is London, where the two leaders could meet after a NATO summit that Trump is due to attend from Dec. 3-4, the official said. “It’s under consideration but nothing decided,” the official said.

Other sites are possible in Europe and Asia, but the former is more likely, with Sweden and Switzerland among the possibilities. Iowa, which Trump has suggested, appeared to have been ruled out, the official said.

China’s latest push for more tariff rollbacks would be discussed, but was not expected to derail progress toward an interim deal.

The official said China was believed to see a quick deal as its best chance for favorable terms, given pressure Trump is facing from a congressional impeachment inquiry as he seeks re-election in 2020.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Jeff Sessions, a former attorney general forced out by President Donald Trump, will announce on Thursday he is running next year to regain his old U.S. Senate seat from Alabama, a Republican official familiar with his plans said on Wednesday.

Sessions, 72, a frequent target of Trump’s anger over his decision to recuse himself from the Russia probe, will be trying to reclaim a seat he resigned to join the Trump administration.

His decision to enter the race was first reported by the Associated Press.

Chile prosecutor seeks to investigate claims of police torture of protesters
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-chile-protests/chile-prosecutor-seeks-to-investigate-claims-of-police-torture-of-protesters-idUSKBN1XG2A9

SANTIAGO (Reuters) - A Chilean prosecutor on Wednesday said he would seek court approval to investigate 14 police officers for allegedly torturing protesters during almost three weeks of intense unrest and rioting in the country.

The protests over deep-seated inequalities in one of Latin America’s richest countries have been less violent in recent days, but show few signs of easing, with demonstrators gathering on Wednesday near a huge shopping mall in one of Santiago’s more upscale neighborhoods.

Santiago East prosecutor Manuel Guerra said his investigation was related to two separate incidents during a nine-day state of emergency in the capital from Oct. 18.

One related to the actions of 12 police officers in Nunoa, a bohemian suburb of Santiago, where protesters defied a curfew to conduct successive nights of large but mainly peaceful demonstrations, a spokesman for Guerra told Reuters, without providing further details.

The second related to two officers in the lower-middle class area of La Florida who were accused of beating a young man who was handcuffed, the spokesman said.

U.S. and China Agree to Roll Back Some Tariffs if Deal Is Struck

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/07/business/china-trade-trump.html?

WASHINGTON — The United States and China have agreed that an initial trade deal between the two countries would roll back a portion of the tariffs placed on each other’s products, a significant step toward defusing tensions between the world’s largest economies.

The agreement has not yet been completed, and a deal could fail to materialize as it has in previous rounds of negotiations. But if a pact is reached, the Trump administration has committed to cutting some tariffs, according to a United States official and other people with knowledge of the negotiations.

This is the first time the administration has agreed to remove any of the tariffs it has placed on $360 billion worth of Chinese goods. While President Trump canceled a planned tariff increase in October, he has routinely dangled the prospect of additional taxes if Beijing does not accede to America’s trade demands.

Ayodhya verdict: Indian top court gives holy site to Hindus

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-50355775

The disputed holy site of Ayodhya in northern India should be given to Hindus who want a temple built there, the country's Supreme Court has ruled.

The case, which has been bitterly contested for decades by Hindus and Muslims, centres on the ownership of the land in Uttar Pradesh state.

Muslims would get another plot of land to construct a mosque, the court said.

Many Hindus believe the site is the birthplace of one of their most revered deities, Lord Ram.

Muslims say they have worshipped there for generations.

In the unanimous verdict, the court said that a report by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) provided evidence that the remains of a building "that was not Islamic" was beneath the structure of the demolished Babri mosque.

The court said that, given all the evidence presented, it had determined that the disputed land should be given to Hindus for a temple to Lord Ram, while Muslims would be given land elsewhere to construct a mosque.

It then directed the federal government to set up a trust to manage and oversee the construction of the temple.

However, the court added that the demolition of the Babri mosque was against the rule of law.

Pompeo attacks Russia and China in Berlin speech

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-50350545

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has warned of the dangers posed by Russia and China, and called on Nato to grow and confront "the challenges of today".

On a visit to Berlin, Mr Pompeo said methods used by China to suppress its own people would be "horrifyingly familiar" to East Germans.

And he accused Russia of invading its neighbours and crushing dissent.

He laughed off comments from French President Emmanuel Macron, who said recently that Nato was "brain dead".

But Mr Pompeo told reporters: "Seventy years on... it needs to grow and change. It needs to confront the realities of today and the challenges of today.

"If nations believe that they can get the security benefit without providing Nato the resources that it needs, if they don't live up to their commitments, there is a risk that Nato could become ineffective or obsolete."

Mick Mulvaney: new testimony draws Trump chief of staff into Ukraine scandal
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/nov/08/mick-mulvaney-trump-ukraine-scandal-testimony-impeachment-inquiry

Donald Trump’s acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney approved a White House meeting with the president for the Ukrainian president on condition Ukraine announced investigations tied to Trump’s political rival Joe Biden, according to testimony released on Friday.

Gordon Sondland, the ambassador to the European Union, “blurted out” that Mulvaney had approved the meeting if the Ukrainians announced an investigation of Burisma, a gas company that formerly employed Hunter Biden, the former vice president’s son, said Fiona Hill, a national security council member who was deposed last month by the congressional committees pursuing an impeachment inquiry against Trump.

Hill’s account was corroborated by simultaneously released testimony by another firsthand witness to the conversation, Lt Col Alexander Vindman.

Previously released testimony has indicated a central role for Mulvaney in brokering an agreement in which Ukraine would intervene in the 2020 US election by announcing the Burisma investigation, but the Hill testimony released on Friday was the first to describe direct involvement in the plot by the acting chief of staff.

Bolivian police 'mutiny' in opposition to Evo Morales
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/nov/09/bolivian-police-mutiny-in-opposition-to-evo-morales

Police in at least three Bolivian cities have declared mutinies and joined anti-government protests – a possible indication that parts of the security forces may be withdrawing their backing for President Evo Morales after weeks of unrest over disputed election results.

Bolivia’s defence minister, Javier Zavaleta, said on Friday that no military action would be taken against the police involved for now and the government would not mobilise troops as tens of thousands of Bolivians took to the streets in cities across the country.

The commander general of the Bolivian police said the officers had been “garrisoned” and had not mutinied.

Television images showed thousands of protesters gathered in peaceful vigils throughout the night at police stations and army barracks. More began to arrive at sunrise on Saturday morning.

Bolivia’s interior minister Carlos Romero said a “coup strategy was taking place” in a televised address and hinted that talks could take place to try to resolve the escalating political crisis as protesters call for Morales to step down amid accusations of fraud in October’s presidential elections.

In La Paz crowds cheered dozens of police officers who marched down a main avenue and garrisoned themselves in the city’s central police station. Other police remained on the streets guarding barricades around the presidential palace on Friday but the mood was starkly different from previous nights of clashes as protesters surrounded them singing: “Brother, police, join the people.”

Spanish election: Polls to open for fourth vote in four years
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-50364124

Voters in Spain are preparing to go to the polls for the country's fourth general election in as many years.

The last election, in April, saw the ruling Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) unable to form a coalition after winning the most seats - but not a majority - in parliament in Madrid.

The country has been struggling to form a stable government since 2015.

The vote is being overshadowed by unrest in Catalonia and the rise of the far-right Vox party.

Bolivia's Morales to call fresh election after OAS audit

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-50365340

Bolivia's President Evo Morales has said he will call a new election after international monitors questioned the result of last month's race.

Speaking at a news conference, the long-standing leader also pledged to replace members of the country's election board.

The Organization of American States (OAS), which monitored the elections, called for the result to be annulled.

Mr Morales' announcement comes after weeks of anti-government protests.

The president, who was first elected in 2006, denies any wrongdoing and has ignored calls to resign.

He told reporters that he made the decision "to preserve the new Bolivia, life and democracy".

What did the OAS say?
In its preliminary report on Saturday, the OAS said it had found "clear manipulations" of Bolivia's voting system and it could not verify the result of the 20 October race.

The international body concluded it was unlikely that Mr Morales had won by the 10% margin required for a victory in the first round.

Spanish elections: Socialists lead amid right-wing surge
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-50367870

The governing Socialist Party in Spain looks set to win the most seats in the general election, but fall short of a majority with almost all results in.

With more than 85% of the votes counted, the opposition conservative Popular Party follows in second place, and the far-right Vox party appears to have heavily increased its vote share.

Right-wing parties have the most votes combined, though no majority.

Spain has not had a stable government since 2015.
This was the country's fourth election in as many years
.
Voter turnout at 18:00 local time (17:00 GMT) was 56.8%, almost four points lower than at the last general election in April.

UK government delay of Russia report is shaming, says Clinton

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/nov/11/uk-government-delay-of-russia-report-is-shaming-says-clinton'

Hillary Clinton has called Downing Street’s suppression of a report into potential Russian infiltration of British politics “damaging, inexplicable and shaming”.

The 2016 US presidential candidate told the Guardian it was “incredibly surprising and unacceptable that in your country there is a government report sitting there about Russian influence and your current government isn’t releasing it”.

The potentially incendiary report by the intelligence and security committee has already been approved by the intelligence agencies. Downing Street was sent a final draft on 17 October and had been expected to sign off the report by the end of last month.

However, No 10 indicated that the parliamentary report would not be made public before the election, citing a sign-off process that it said could take six weeks. The chairman of the committee, Dominic Grieve, called the decision to delay publication “jaw-dropping”.
