Far-right AfD kingmakers in German state election
https://www.dw.com/en/far-right-afd-kingmakers-in-german-state-election/a-52268385

A huge political upset in Germany's eastern state of Thuringia on Wednesday sparked a widespread outcry across the country as the ruling coalition saw its candidate for state premier lose by a single vote to the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP), who had barely cleared the 5% support hurdle to join the regional parliament.

What was even more cause for concern, however, was the historic role of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the victory of FDP candidate Thomas Kemmerich (above), marking the first time a German state premier was able to take office with the help of the nationalist party.

Thuringia held its state election all the way back in October, with the ruling Left party winning the highest share of the votes at 31%. At the same time, however, the AfD more than doubled its own support to come in second at 23.4% of the vote.

Germany AfD: Merkel fires minister over far right row

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-51427957

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has dismissed a minister for praising the election of a liberal candidate who was supported by the far right.

The candidate, Thomas Kemmerich, won an election in the state of Thuringia with the backing of the far-right AfD party.

Christian Hirte, who belongs to Mrs Merkel's CDU party, tweeted his congratulations afterwards.

Mr Kemmerich's victory with AfD support was seen as a political earthquake. Mrs Merkel said it was "unforgiveable".

Wednesday's election broke a taboo in German politics that mainstream parties do not work with the far right, and led to outrage among Ms Merkel's centre-left coalition partners in the national government, the Social Democrats (SPD).

As the vote sent shockwaves through Germany, Mr Hirte tweeted to FDP politician Mr Kemmerich: "Your election as a candidate of the middle shows once again that the Thuringian [left-wing] red-green alliance has been voted out for good."

The tweet was widely condemned, and Sven Kindler, Green Party member of the German parliament - the Bundestag - replied: "Forming pacts with Nazis and also giving your congratulations, what a shame."

Mr Hirte was a minister for former East German states and secretary of state for the economy and energy. In a brief statement, Mrs Merkel's spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said: "The chancellor has today proposed to the federal president the dismissal of Secretary of State Christian Hirte."

Switzerland votes on LGBT discrimination proposal

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-51370820

Voters in Switzerland go to the polls on Sunday to decide on a proposal to make discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and sexual identity punishable by law.

Discrimination because of race or religion is already illegal in the country.

Now members of Switzerland's LGBT community hope they too will get legal protection.

But opponents of the new law argue it could restrict free speech.

"Many Swiss people tend to overrate how modern our country is," explains Anna Rosenwasser of the Swiss Lesbian Organisation.

Irish general election: Exit poll predicts 'tie' between three main parties
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-51429292

The three main political parties have tied in first preference votes, according to an exit poll for the Republic of Ireland's general election.

The earliest indications from the poll suggest there is little difference between Fine Gael, Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil.

Polling closed in the general election at 22:00 GMT.

Counting to elect the 33rd Dáil (Irish parliament) will begin on Sunday in all 39 constituencies.

There will be coverage of the election results on the BBC News NI website from 12:00 GMT on Sunday.

The poll was commissioned jointly by RTÉ, The Irish Times, TG4 and UCD and included sampling of 5,000 respondents at 250 polling stations.

RTÉ says voting appears to have been "solid".

However, there is no expectation of a spike in voting compared to 2016 despite it being the first ever Saturday general election vote.

Factors that may have affected turnout include the poor weather and international rugby.

The exit poll indicates that Fine Gael secured 22.4% of first preference votes, closely followed by Sinn Féin (22.3%) and Fianna Fáil (22.2%).

It also suggests the Green Party secured 7.9% of first preference votes, followed by Labour (4.6%), Social Democrats (3.4%), Solidarity People Before Profit (2.8%).

Indications are that Independents took 11.2% of first preference votes.

Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer to quit as CDU leader amid far-right 'firewall' row
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/feb/10/annegret-kramp-karrenbauer-to-quit-as-cdu-leader-amid-far-right-firewall-row

Angela Merkel’s designated successor has announced she is not planning to run for the German chancellorship at the next federal election and plans to step down as leader of the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), German media reported on Monday morning.

The surprise announcement comes in the middle of a major row over the centre-right party’s “firewall” against the far-right, in which CDU delegates in eastern Germany have defied the party headquarter’s ban on cooperating with the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD).

Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, 57, won the contest to succeed Merkel as leader of the CDU in December 2018 and was seen as the candidate most likely to continue the current German chancellor’s centrist course.

But “AKK”, as she has come to be known in German media, has struggled to build a profile in Merkel’s shadow, even after doubling up as defence minister last July.

Questions over her control over an increasingly divided CDU returned to the fore last week, after politicians from the party’s branch in Thuringia voted with the AfD to oust the state’s premier Bodo Ramelow, of leftwing Die Linke.

Irish general election: Second day of counting under way

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-51441410

The second day of counting in the Irish general election is under way following what has been a historic result for Sinn Féin.

The result was described as "something of a revolution in the ballot box" by the party's leader Mary Lou McDonald.

With all first preferences counted, the left-wing republican party has taken 24.5% of the vote, compared to 22% for Fianna Fáil and 21% for Fine Gael.

No one party will win enough seats for an outright majority.

Just over 80 seats remain to be filled, but negotiations to establish a government that will follow could be prolonged.

Before the election, both Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil had ruled out forging a coalition with left-wing republican party Sinn Féin, citing its tax policies and IRA past as deterrents.

On Sunday evening, taoiseach (Irish PM) and Fine Gael leader Leo Varadkar conceded it would be "challenging" to form a government.

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin did not rule out working with Sinn Féin, but said "significant incompatibilities" still existed.

Delhi election: Arvind Kejriwal returns as chief minister after AAP victory
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-51454136

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has secured another term in office after his party won a resounding victory in elections in the capital.

Voters overwhelmingly backed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in an election which pitted them against India's governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

It's a setback for the BJP after last year's general election landslide.

The party won five more seats in Delhi but still holds just eight out of 70. The AAP won all the rest.

"This is a win for Mother India," a grinning Mr Kejriwal told his supporters at the AAP office earlier in the day. He waved and blew them kisses, and said he "loved the people of Delhi".

Yang confirms end of his campaign
https://www.bbc.com/news/live/world-us-canada-51448053

Andrew Yang is speaking to his supporters in New Hampshire.

"We've accomplished so much together," he began.

"We have brought a message of humanity first and a vision of the economy and society that works for us and our families."

"We went from a mailing list that started with just my Gmail contact list to receiving donations from over 400,000 people around the country and millions more who supported this campaign," Yang added.

Yang said he was proud of his campaign giving $1,000 a month to 13 families across the country as well.

He said the suspension of his campaign was "bitterly disappointing", but "it shouldn't be" given all they have accomplished.

Bernie Sanders wins New Hampshire primary ahead of Pete Buttigieg
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-51470088

Bernie Sanders has won the New Hampshire Democratic primary contest, on a terrible night for former vice-president Joe Biden.

The left-wing senator took a tight victory over centrist former mayor Pete Buttigieg, who offered a different Democratic vision in the race to take on President Trump in November.

Mr Sanders declared the night "the beginning of the end" of Mr Trump.

Success in New Hampshire - like Iowa - offers momentum for the race ahead.

Finishing behind Vermont senator Mr Sanders were two moderates - Mr Buttigieg and Minnesota senator Amy Klobuchar, who emerged as a surprise contender by taking third place.

Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren and Mr Biden - two erstwhile frontrunners - finished in fourth and fifth places.

Technology entrepreneur Andrew Yang and Colorado senator Michael Bennet both dropped out of the race.

What were the results in New Hampshire?
Some 280,000 Democratic voters cast ballots in the Granite State on Tuesday night, delivering 26% to Mr Sanders.

With more than 90% of the vote counted, Mr Sanders, 78, led Mr Buttigieg, the 38-year-old the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, by only 1.6%, or about 4,300 votes.

Mr Sanders hailed a "great victory" as he thanked supporters from a rally in Manchester, New Hampshire.

"This victory here is the beginning of the end for Donald Trump," he said, and promised to build an "unprecedented multi-generational, multi-racial political movement" to defeat the Republican.

The result will give Mr Sanders nine of the 24 delegates who will represent New Hampshire at the July Democratic national convention, where the party crowns a nominee based on the delegates won.

Although he had fewer votes, Mr Buttigieg will also get nine delegates. Thanking supporters, he warned against succumbing to "a polarised vision" of politics and pitched himself as the centrist to bring new voters into the party.

Unlike in Iowa last week, where turnout was disappointing, New Hampshire voters turned out in higher numbers than in 2016.

Irish general election: Sinn Féin bid to form new government

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-51468778

The Sinn Féin President, Mary Lou McDonald, has held talks with Green Party leader Eamon Ryan about forming a new Irish government.

She described the meeting as "useful and constructive".

Sinn Féin topped the first preference poll in Saturday's Irish general election, but its 37 seats is one fewer than Fianna Fáil.

No single party secured enough seats to govern alone.

Speaking after the meeting on Wednesday, Mrs McDonald said: "I have made it clear since before the election - and after - that I will speak to all parties in the interests of forming a government; starting with those with a mandate for change.

"We have agreed to begin exchanging ideas, and we will talk and meet again over the coming days."

On Monday, Mrs McDonald said she "may well be the next taoiseach (Irish prime minister)".

The party has appointed a Donegal TD, Pearse Doherty, to lead its negotiating team for the coalition talks.

Sinn Féin said Mr Doherty would initially seek meetings with some of the smaller left-wing parties that won seats in the Dáil Éireann (Irish parliament).

// 在實際談判上,新芬黨也佔了上風,因為目前只有4個組閣可能:

The Labour Party leadership contest will kick off this morning
https://www.thejournal.ie/labour-party-leadership-contest-to-commence-this-morning-5008460-Feb2020/

The executive board of the Labour Party will meet at 11am.

THE RACE TO become the next Labour Party leader kicks off today after Brendan Howlin announced earlier this week he was stepping down following the party’s poor performance in the General Election.

The executive board of the Labour Party will meet at 11am and will set the rules for the contest, which is set to be fought between a number of Labour TDs.

Howlin, who has led the party since 2016, announced his departure at a press conference on Wednesday, throwing open the doors to a leadership contest.

There are three men mooted to be in the running to be the next Labour leader; Tipperary TD Alan Kelly, Louth TD Ged Nash and Dublin Bay North TD Aodhán Ó Ríordáin.

The contest is expected to last about six weeks and the winner will be decided by a majority vote of the party membership.

Asked earlier this week what members standing behind him at the media event in Dublin might be vying for his job, Howlin joked that he hoped they wouldn’t raise their hand just yet and would give him a moment to say his goodbyes.

Huawei row: Australian MPs cancel UK trip amid tensions over leak
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-51513886

Senior Australian MPs have cancelled a planned trip to the UK as tensions heighten over the role of Huawei in building Britain's 5G network.

Lawmakers from the intelligence and security committee had been expected to travel to the UK next month.

But the trip has been postponed amid reports of a diplomatic rift.

The decision follows a reported complaint from the UK over leaked details of a high-level meeting where Huawei was discussed.

Australia has banned the Chinese telecommunications giant from building its next-generation 5G mobile internet networks but Britain last month decided the company could continue to play a role in its system, despite pressure and warnings from Washington.

Last week, UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab visited Australia, where he met members of the parliament's intelligence committee.

HS2: UK in talks with China over construction of high-speed line

https://www.bbc.com/news/business-51512831

The UK and China have held "preliminary discussions" over giving Beijing's state-owned railway firm a role in building the HS2 high-speed rail line.

However, government officials said no "concrete commitments" had been made.

China's state railway company said it could build the line in just five years and at a much lower cost, according to a letter seen by Building magazine.

But Conservative MP Tom Tugendhat warned letting CRCC build HS2 would be "extremely questionable".

It comes after Boris Johnson this week approved the controversial HS2 scheme.

This was despite an official review warning costs could reach over £100bn, against a budget of £62bn.

Trump says he has right to act on criminal cases

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-51506976

US President Donald Trump has tweeted he has "the legal right" to intervene in criminal cases after his attorney general complained White House tweets were making his job "impossible".

In his post, Mr Trump also denied he had ever meddled in any cases.

America's top law officer William Barr on Thursday asked Mr Trump to stop his tweets, saying he would not be bullied.

Mr Barr spoke out after Mr Trump renewed his attack on the criminal trial of his ex-adviser, Roger Stone.

Prosecutors had recommended Stone serve a stiff sentence, but Mr Trump tweeted that was unfair.

On Friday morning, Mr Trump ignored the attorney general's plea to stop tweeting.

Azeri police detain opposition leaders, block protest against election result
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-azerbaijan-election-opposition/azeri-police-detain-opposition-leaders-block-protest-against-election-result-idUSKBN20A0F3

BAKU (Reuters) - Police in Azerbaijan detained three opposition party leaders and more than 100 activists on Sunday before they were due to take part in a protest against the results of last week’s national election, which have been questioned by international observers.

According to the Central Election Commission (CEC), the ruling Yeni Azerbaijan (New Azerbaijan) party won 72 out of 125 seats in the single-chamber parliament last Sunday, with nearly all other seats going to small parties and independents loyal to President Ilham Aliyev.

Before Sunday’s unauthorized protest was scheduled to start, police detained either at their homes or outside their party headquarters the leader of the REAL party, Ilgar Mamedly, the leader of the Musavat Party, Arif Gajily, and the head of the D18 opposition movement, Ruslan Izzetly. All three failed to win seats in last week’s election.

Dozens of riot police surrounded the election commission’s building, where the protest had been due to start from, and put anyone arriving to take part in the demonstration on a bus, a Reuters witness at the scene said.

Some protesters held up posters saying: “Abolish election results!” or “We demand free elections!”
