Canada election: Trudeau's Liberals win but lose majority

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-50134640

Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party has retained power in a narrow Canadian election win but he will now be prime minister of a minority government.

The Liberals are projected to win 157 seats, 13 short of a majority, and will find it harder to pass legislation in Mr Trudeau's second term.

The opposition Conservatives are expected to win the popular vote but have not translated that into seats.

They are projected to take 121, up from the 95 they held before.

Although Monday night's results saw a sharp decline in seats for the country's left-leaning New Democratic Party (NDP), its leader, Jagmeet Singh, could become the kingmaker.

The NDP is projected to take 24 seats in the 338-seat parliament.

Quebec's separatist party, the Bloc Québécois, which competes only in that province, fared much better. It is expected to take 32 seats, compared to the 10 it won in 2015.

Turnout is currently listed at 66%.

Erdoğan threatens to ramp up assault on Kurds in Syria 'safe zone'

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/oct/22/erdogan-threatens-ramp-up-assault-kurds-syria-safe-zone-ceasefire

The Turkish president has threatened to press ahead with an operation against Kurdish-led forces in Syria “even more strongly” if promises made by the US regarding the withdrawal of Kurdish fighters have not been met by the time a five-day ceasefire expires.

Up to 1,300 fighters from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are yet to vacate Ankara’s proposed border “safe zone”, as per the terms of a ceasefire announced by the US vice-president, Mike Pence, in Ankara last week, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan told reporters before flying to Russia.

Erdoğan is meeting Vladimir Putin in Sochi on Tuesday for talks expected to focus on the size and scope of the planned buffer zone before the pause in fighting ends at 10pm local time (1900 GMT).

Turkish troops, allied Syrian rebel proxies, the SDF, and soldiers belonging to both the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, and his Russian allies are all now present in the border area after Donald Trump announced he would withdraw US troops, paving the way for Ankara to launch an attack on the SDF on 9 October.

As a result of the Turkish offensive, Syria’s Kurdish officials struck a deal with Assad, their former enemy, for military reinforcements in the border area.

Trump calls impeachment inquiry 'a lynching'

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-50142172

US President Donald Trump has called the congressional impeachment investigation that may seek to remove him from office "a lynching".

In a tweet Mr Trump condemned the inquiry as "without due process or fairness or any legal rights".

Democrats may seek to impeach the Republican president by Christmas.

A racially loaded term in the US, lynching refers to historic extrajudicial executions by white mobs against mainly African Americans.

Mr Trump has repeatedly called the impeachment inquiry, as well as an earlier investigation into foreign meddling in the 2016 election, a "witchhunt".

But his likening of a process enshrined in the US constitution to racist mob killings provoked outrage among African-American lawmakers.

Congressman Jim Clyburn told CNN on Tuesday: "That is one word that no president ought to apply to himself."

"I've studied presidential history quite a bit and I don't if we've ever seen anything quite like this."

"I'm a product of the South," the South Carolina Democrat added. "I know the history of that word. That is a word that we ought to be very, very careful about using."

PM to pull Brexit bill if timetable not approved

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-50142367

The government will abandon its Brexit bill if MPs vote down the three-day timetable for its debate and the EU confirms a delay.

The Withdrawal Agreement Bill was published on Monday night, and MPs will vote later on whether to agree the timetable to get it through Parliament.

Brexit bill 'in limbo' as MPs reject timetable
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-50146182

Boris Johnson has hit the pause button on his Brexit legislation after MPs rejected his plan to get it through the Commons in three days.

MPs backed his Withdrawal Agreement Bill - but minutes later voted against the timetable, leaving it "in limbo".

After the vote, EU Council President Donald Tusk said he would recommend EU leaders backed an extension to the 31 October Brexit deadline.

But a No 10 source said if a delay was granted, the PM would seek an election.

The PM told Parliament if it "decides to delay everything until January or possibly longer", he would seek an election - but he did not say what the government would do if the EU offered a shorter extension.

MPs did approve the bill on its first hurdle through the Commons - called the second reading - by 329 votes to 299.

But in a vote straight after, they rejected the so-called programme motion, in other words the planned timetable to get the bill through Parliament, by 14 votes after a number of MPs criticised the pace of the legislation.

Chaos erupts as Republicans barge into Trump impeachment inquiry hearing
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/oct/23/chaos-erupts-as-republicans-barge-into-trump-impeachment-inquiry-hearing

Political tensions over an intensifying impeachment inquiry reached fever pitch on Wednesday as Republicans “stormed” a closed-door committee hearing on Capitol Hill disrupting a crucial deposition related to the Ukraine controversy was appearing – a day after devastating testimony from a key diplomat.

A group of Republican members of the House of Representatives, chanting “Let us in”, barged into a secure office suite in the bowels of the US capitol where Laura Cooper, a top Pentagon official who oversees Ukraine policy, was preparing to testify.

The chaos and confusion temporarily shut down the proceedings before the three House committees leading the impeachment inquiry as Republicans tweeted updates of the disruption from their cellphones, which are not typically permitted in classified areas. Their presence in the chamber reportedly erupted into yelling matches with committee members.

Brexit: Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn meet after timetable rejected
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-50153910

Boris Johnson has met Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn amid uncertainty over what happens next with Brexit.

The meeting comes after MPs rejected the PM's plan to fast-track a bill to implement his deal through Parliament.

During PMQs, Mr Johnson said MPs had "willed the end but not the means" and it was now the EU's decision whether to grant an extension beyond 31 October.

Mr Corbyn told the Commons MPs must "have the necessary time to improve on this worse-than-terrible treaty".

The BBC's political editor Laura Kuenssberg says she understands nothing was agreed at the meeting on Wednesday morning.

Labour was keen to discuss a different timetable for the Brexit bill, while the PM wanted to know what Mr Corbyn would do if the EU refused to grant an extension, she added.

A Labour Party spokesperson said: "Jeremy Corbyn reiterated Labour's offer to the prime minister to agree a reasonable timetable to debate, scrutinise and amend the Withdrawal Agreement Bill, and restated that Labour will support a general election when the threat of a no-deal crash-out is off the table."

No 10 said there had been "no meeting of minds" between the two men and no further talks were currently planned.

Turkey Syria offensive: Trump lifts Turkey sanctions after deal
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-50157439

The US is lifting sanctions imposed on Turkey nine days ago over its offensive against Kurdish fighters in northern Syria, President Donald Trump says.

His decision came after Russia agreed with Turkey to deploy troops to extend a ceasefire along the Syrian border.

Turkey's assault began after Mr Trump's unexpected move to withdraw US troops from northern Syria earlier this month.

"Let someone else fight over this long bloodstained sand," the president said in a TV address from the White House.

He was heavily criticised by both Democrats and Republicans for the abrupt military pullout, as the Kurds targeted by Turkey had been key US allies in the fight against the Islamic State group (IS) in the region.

Turkey ordered the military operation against the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) militia - which it considers a terrorist organisation - on 9 October, days after the US withdrawal was announced.

Chile protests: One million join peaceful march for reform

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-50191746

An estimated one million people have joined a peaceful protest march in Chile's capital, calling on the government to tackle inequality.

Participants walked for miles around the city, banging pots, waving flags and calling for reform.

Santiago's governor said it was a "historic" moment for the country, which has seen days of protests.

President Sebastián Piñera said the government had "heard the message".

"We have all changed. Today's joyful and peaceful march, in which Chileans have asked for a more just and unified Chile, opens hopeful paths into the future," he wrote on Twitter.

Earlier on Friday, politicians and officials had to be escorted out of the Congress building in the city of Valparaiso, after anti-government activists tried to force their way in.

Brexit: EU agrees to Brexit delay, but no date yet

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-50175914

EU ambassadors have agreed to delay Brexit, but will not make a decision on a new deadline date until next week.

The European Commission said work on this would "continue in the coming days".

The talks came after Chancellor Sajid Javid admitted the government's deadline to deliver Brexit next Thursday "can't be met".

Boris Johnson said he was waiting for the EU to decide "what they want to do".

MPs are expected on Monday to consider the prime minister's call for an early general election.

Mr Johnson says he wants to hold one on 12 December, if the EU offers a Brexit delay until 31 January.

But the chances of enough MPs backing the motion - which requires the support of two-thirds of the House of Commons - appear uncertain, with Labour not committing to how it plans to vote.

Leader Jeremy Corbyn said he was only prepared to agree to an election once the PM had completely ruled out "to my satisfaction" the possibility of a no-deal Brexit.

"My position is we've got to get no-deal taken off the table first," he told ITV's This Morning programme.

"Providing the prime minister comes to Parliament on Monday and makes it absolutely clear he is going to make sure that there is no crash out - because his deal includes the possibility of a no-deal exit... if he comes on Monday and says that, then OK," he added.

Iraq protests: 40 dead as mass unrest descends into violence

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-50181212

At least 40 people have died in Iraq during a fresh wave of anti-government protests that descended into violence.

Two of the dead were reportedly hit by tear gas canisters fired by security forces in the capital Baghdad.

Reports say half of the victims were killed while trying to storm the offices of militia groups and the government.

Protesters are demanding more jobs, better public services and an end to corruption.

About 2,000 people were wounded in protests across the country, AFP quoted a security source as saying.

Similar protests earlier this month were brutally put down by security forces, leaving nearly 150 people dead.

A government report has acknowledged that authorities used excessive force in quelling that unrest.

Ahead of the latest protests, Iraq's leading clerics and the United Nations issued calls for restraint.

A day earlier Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi, who took office a year ago on Friday, warned protesters that violence would not be tolerated.

He has promised a cabinet reshuffle and a package of reforms to address protesters' demands but many remain unconvinced.

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi: US 'conducts operation against IS chief' - US media
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-50198123

The US military has conducted an operation against the fugitive leader of the Islamic State (IS) group, US media report.

Claims of a raid against Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi have not been confirmed.

The White House said US President Donald Trump would make a "major statement" on Sunday, but gave no further details.

Mr Trump earlier shared a cryptic tweet saying: "Something very big has just happened!"

Officials quoted anonymously by various media outlets said US forces targeted the militant leader in a raid in northwest Syria.

A US official told Reuters news agency an operation took place but was unable to confirm speculation that Baghdadi was killed.

The IS leader has been wrongly reported to be dead on previous occasions.

The White House has not confirmed either that an operation took place, or its alleged outcome.

The raid was carried out by special operations forces after they received "actionable intelligence", Newsweek said, citing unnamed sources.

Following the reports, UK-based war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said helicopter gunfire had killed nine people near a village in Syria's Idlib province, where "groups linked to the Islamic State group" were present.

Mr Trump is set to make his statement at 09:00 (13:00 GMT) on Sunday.

Chile protests: President sacks whole cabinet after protests

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-50197673

Chile's President Sebastian Piñera has dismissed his whole cabinet in order to form a new government and introduce social reforms demanded by protesters.

"I have put all my ministers on notice in order to restructure my cabinet to confront these new demands," he said.

It is not yet clear what form the reshuffle will take.

More than a million people joined a peaceful rally on Friday in the capital Santiago, calling for social justice.

Mr Piñera said he had heard the demands from the streets.

"We are in a new reality," he said. "Chile is different from what it was a week ago."

The president also announced that a curfew imposed in cities across Chile a week ago had been lifted.

The opposition has called for an ongoing state of emergency to end too.

Catalonia crisis: Separatist protest draws 350,000 in Barcelona

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-50194846?

About 350,000 people have protested in Barcelona over the jailing of separatist leaders from Spain's Catalonia region, police say.

The peaceful march was also organised to underline support for Catalonia's independence movement.

A separate demonstration by a direct action group turned violent on Saturday evening, as protesters targeted the police headquarters.

Spanish unionists plan to hold their own mass rally in the city on Sunday.

Nine separatist leaders were jailed on 14 October by Spain's Supreme Court for between nine and 13 years after being convicted of sedition.

The days that followed saw some of the worst violence in the history of the modern independence movement, which prides itself on its peaceful tactics.

Brexit election: Government rejects Lib Dem-SNP poll bid

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-50199682

Conservative Party chairman James Cleverly has dismissed as a "gimmick" an attempt from the Liberal Democrats and the Scottish National Party to trigger a 9 December election.

Their bill depends on the EU granting an extension until 31 January, which the government does not want.

Mr Cleverly also said he was "cynical" as the bill would be amendable - so MPs can suggest changes to it.

Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson said the bill would avert no-deal in the short term.

She said the bill would enshrine their proposed election date into law.

The Lib Dems and SNP have said they reject the government's election date, which they believe would allow time for the PM to "ram through" his Brexit Bill.

The prime minister has said if MPs support a vote on Monday in the Commons for an election on 12 December, he will use the remaining time before Parliament is dissolved on 6 November to try to pass the legislation for his Brexit deal.

Speaking to the BBC's Andrew Marr Show, Mr Cleverly said of the Lib Dem-SNP bill: "It's clearly a gimmick.

"Their bill moves the election date by three days, takes the withdrawal agreement completely off the table."

Lebanon protesters form human chain across the country

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/10/lebanon-protesters-form-human-chain-country-191027113442407.html?

Tens of thousands of Lebanese protesters have formed a human chain running north to south across the entire country to symbolise national unity amid a civil disobedience campaign against the government.

Demonstrators on Sunday joined hands from Tripoli to Tyre, a 170-kilometre (105-mile) chain running through the main protest hub in the capital, Beirut, as part of an unprecedented cross-sectarian mobilisation.

Reporting from Beirut, Al Jazeera's Stefanie Dekker said the protesters were sending "a strong message to try and keep the pressure on the government" on the eleventh day of anti-government protests.
