Reporter: Bezos investigator believes 'government entity' may have obtained texts
https://thehill.com/policy/technology/429085-reporter-bezos-investigator-believes-government-entity-may-have-obtained?

A reporter at The Washington Post says that an investigator hired by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos believes that text messages leaked to the National Enquirer between Bezos and his girlfriend may have been sent to the magazine by someone in government.

In an appearance on MSNBC on Thursday, Post reporter Manuel Roig-Franzia said that Bezos's security consultant, Gavin de Becker, believes that the National Enquirer obtained text messages from Bezos through inappropriate means.

Bezos on Thursday said in a blog post that the Enquirer was attempting to force him to call off his investigation of the tabloid under the threat of further texts being released.

“They have begun to believe, the Bezos camp, that this publication by the National Enquirer might have been politically motivated,” Roig-Franzia said Thursday.

Donald Trump has said that US diplomats have had a “very productive meeting” with North Korean officials as he announced his summit later this month with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un would be held in Vietnam’s capital, Hanoi.

“My representatives have just left North Korea after a very productive meeting and an agreed upon time and date for the second Summit with Kim Jong Un. It will take place in Hanoi, Vietnam, on February 27 & 28,” Trump said on Twitter.

“I look forward to seeing Chairman Kim & advancing the cause of peace!” he said.

Thailand: princess's bid for power is over after party withdraws support
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/feb/09/thai-princess-running-for-pm-says-she-wants-country-moving-forward

The bid for political power by Thailand’s Princess Ubolratana has been scuttled by her own party after it announced it would comply with an order from her brother, the king, to block her candidacy.

In a dramatic reversal after she shocked the nation by announcing she would run for prime minister, the Thai Raksa Chart party issued a short statement effectively ending her run.

“The Thai Raksa Chart party complies with the royal command”, it said in a message to reporters.

The statement added that the party was ready to do its duty with respect to the “tradition and royal customs” under Thailand’s constitutional monarchy.

It came after the princess used Instagram on Saturday to thank her supporters, saying she wants Thailand to be “moving forward”.

She did not directly mention her brother or her political hopes, but thanked supporters for their “love and kindness toward each other over the past day” and expressed gratitude for their support for her.

Spain: Thousands demand Pedro Sanchez resign
https://www.dw.com/en/spain-thousands-demand-pedro-sanchez-resign/a-47447370

Huge crowds of anti-government protesters converged on central Madrid on Sunday to pressure Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to step down and call fresh elections.

An estimated 45,000 people packed into the capital's Plaza de Colon, many of them waving Spanish flags and signs reading "Stop Sanchez" and "For a united Spain, elections now!"

The rally was organized by the conservative opposition Popular Party (PP) and the center-right Citizens Party, with backing from the far-right party Vox.

"The time of Sanchez's government is over," PP leader Pablo Casado told reporters at the start of the march. His opposition party is firmly against the prime minister's decision to tackle political tensions in northeastern Catalonia by negotiating with pro-independence parties.

Algeria's President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to run for fifth term
https://www.dw.com/en/algerias-president-abdelaziz-bouteflika-to-run-for-fifth-term/a-47451443

Algeria's ailing President Abdelaziz Bouteflika announced on Sunday he will seek a fifth term in April 18 elections, amid concern over the 81-year-old's health.

Bouteflika has used a wheelchair since suffering a stroke in 2013 that left him with difficulty speaking and moving. He is rarely seen in public.

"Of course, I am no longer the same physical force as before — something that I have never hidden from the people," the state news agency APS reported him as saying.

"But the unwavering desire to serve... has never left me and it allows me to transcend the constraints linked to health troubles which everyone may one day face," the president added.

Klobuchar jumps into presidential race

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/02/10/amy-klobuchar-2020-presidential-candidate-1162576

MINNEAPOLIS — Sen. Amy Klobuchar leapt into the 2020 presidential race Sunday, becoming the first Midwestern state official to join the field taking on President Donald Trump.

The three-term Minnesota Democrat announced her campaign amid driving snow at Boom Island Park with a call to rebuild a “sense of community” in America, against the backdrop of the Interstate 35 bridge that collapsed in 2007, killing 13, spurring Klobuchar and lawmakers from both parties to secure funding to rebuild the span in a year.

“We are tired of the shutdowns and the showdowns, the gridlock and the grandstanding,” Klobuchar said in a speech to supporters. “Our nation must be governed not from chaos but from opportunity. Not by wallowing over what’s wrong, but by marching inexorably toward what’s right.”

US shutdown talks stall ahead of deadline

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-47191959

Talks between US Republicans and Democrats to reach a border security agreement and avoid another government shutdown have stalled, reports say.

Negotiators had wanted a deal by Monday to give Congress time to pass legislation by Friday, when last month's federal funding deal runs out.

The latest impasse has arisen because Democrats want officials from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to concentrate on detaining migrants with criminal records instead of those who have overstayed their visas by limiting the number of beds its detention centres have, the New York Times reported.

Democratic negotiators were hoping to cap the number of beds at 16,500. That is roughly the number of people detained in the last years of the Obama White House, the Washington Post says.

Negotiators had also been looking at between $1.3bn and $2bn in funding for Mr Trump's proposed border wall, a long way off the $5.7bn the president has been demanding, reports said.

UK and Switzerland to sign post-Brexit trade agreement
https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-britain-eu-swiss/uk-and-switzerland-to-sign-post-brexit-trade-agreement-idUSKCN1Q0011

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain and Switzerland will sign an agreement on Monday to continue trading on preferential terms after Brexit, the British trade department said, protecting a trade relationship worth 32 billion pounds.

The formal signing of the deal, on which agreement had previously been announced, is one of only handful of concrete steps Britain has made towards ensuring that all the trade deals it currently benefits from as an EU member will continue after it leaves the bloc next month.

“Not only will this help to support jobs throughout the UK but it will also be a solid foundation for us to build an even stronger trading relationship with Switzerland as we leave the EU,” International Trade minister Liam Fox said in a statement.

The deal reflects Switzerland’s “mind the gap” strategy of ensuring seamless trade ties with Britain, regardless of whether London is able to strike and approve a formal exit agreement with Brussels by March 29, the date it is scheduled to leave.

May rejects Corbyn's offer as businesses warn of Brexit cliff edge
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/feb/10/brexit-mps-will-have-another-say-by-end-of-month-says-minister

Theresa May has effectively ruled out Labour’s ideas for a compromise Brexit plan, shutting off another potential route to a deal as business groups warned that with less than 50 days to go the departure process was entering the “emergency zone”.

The prime minister’s formal response to Jeremy Corbyn’s proposal, in a letter to the Labour leader, stressed her objections to keeping the UK in some form of customs union, saying this would prevent the UK making its own trade deals.

But in an apparent renewed bid to win over wavering Labour MPs, May made a concession on environmental and workers’ rights, discounting Corbyn’s idea of automatic alignment with EU standards but suggesting instead a Commons vote every time these change.

The letter comes amid a growing presumption that while May remains officially committed to putting a revised Brexit plan to MPs as soon as possible, in practice this is unlikely to happen before the end of February, if not later.

Trump objects to measure ending U.S. support for Saudis in Yemen war
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-saudi-yemen/trump-objects-to-measure-ending-u-s-support-for-saudis-in-yemen-war-idUSKCN1Q102V?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Trump administration threatened on Monday to veto an effort in the U.S. Congress to end U.S. military support for the Saudi Arabia-led coalition in the war in Yemen, continuing a stand-off with lawmakers over policy toward the kingdom.

Democrats and Republicans re-introduced the war powers resolution two weeks ago as a way to send a strong message to Riyadh both about the humanitarian disaster in Yemen and condemn the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

The administration said the resolution was inappropriate because U.S. forces had provided aircraft refueling and other support in the Yemen conflict, not combat troops. It also said the measure would harm relationships in the region and hurt the U.S. ability to prevent the spread of violent extremism.

The White House has angered many members of Congress, including some of President Donald Trump’s fellow Republicans, by failing to provide a report by a Friday deadline on the murder of Khashoggi last year at a Saudi consulate in Turkey. Khashoggi was a U.S. resident and columnist for the Washington Post.

Texas showdown: O'Rourke, Trump hold dueling rallies over wall
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-protests/texas-showdown-orourke-trump-hold-dueling-rallies-over-wall-idUSKCN1Q01Y2

EL PASO, Texas (Reuters) - Beto O’Rourke, the former Democratic congressman considering a White House run, and President Donald Trump will hold dueling rallies in El Paso, Texas, on Monday over the U.S.-Mexico border and the president’s push for a wall.

O’Rourke, who lost in his bid for a U.S. Senate seat in Texas, promised to blast Trump for stoking “false fear” about immigrants and telling “lies” about his hometown El Paso, which Trump said was a dangerous place before it had a border fence.

In a conference call with reporters, O’Rourke said his counter-rally two hundred yards from the Trump event would be a “powerful, beautiful” response to “Trump’s lies about our community, the U.S.-Mexico border, immigrants, about Mexicans.”

Trump is traveling to El Paso to argue for a wall he says can protect Americans from violent criminals, drugs and a “tremendous onslaught” of migrant caravans.

‘The odds have improved’: Lawmakers bullish on reaching deal to avert shutdown
https://www.politico.com/story/2019/02/11/shutdown-congress-border-security-1163824

Democratic and Republican negotiators said they were optimistic about striking a broad spending deal as soon as Monday night as congressional dealmakers sought to avoid revisiting another government shutdown at the end of this week.

Amid a breakneck series of meetings aimed at funding a quarter of the government and providing a bipartisan border security deal, the top spending committee lawmakers said they would reconvene late into the night to try to get out of a battle over President Donald Trump's border wall that has sucked up two months of Congress's energy and provoked a 35-day shutdown.

One Republican senator said that Democrats have privately signaled they don't believe their position is tenable on the detention beds and that they were showing flexibility now that the fight has taken a turn away from the border wall.

A Democratic source close to the talks said Democrats were willing to back off their demands for a cap on detention beds if Republicans agree to other budgetary restrictions on interior enforcement. Democrats feel that backing off their cap demands would be a significant concession, but still want a deal and want Republicans to resume negotiations with them.

The two sides are also still far apart on Trump’s demands for a border wall, with Democrats resisting efforts to fund new fencing but open to fixing existing barriers. The numbers discussed for border funding range from $1-2 billion, far short of Trump’s ask of $5.7 billion.

Brexit: Theresa May says MPs must hold their nerve

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-47206286

Brexit talks are at a "crucial stage", Theresa May will tell MPs as she updates them on the negotiations.

The PM will say "we now all need to hold our nerve" to get the changes needed to get her Brexit deal through Parliament by the 29 March deadline.

She has been trying to secure changes to the backstop arrangement - the "insurance" policy to avoid a return to border checks on the island of Ireland.

The EU has reiterated it will not renegotiate the withdrawal agreement.

Leader of the Commons Andrea Leadsom said Mrs May "needs a bit more time" to negotiate with the EU and would give MPs a "meaningful vote" on a revised deal "as soon as possible".

Negotiators reach deal ‘in principle’ to avert shutdown

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/02/11/shutdown-congress-border-security-1163824

Congressional negotiators announced an "agreement in principle" Monday night on a broad spending bill they hope will satisfy President Donald Trump's demands for additional border barriers and avert another government shutdown at the end of this week.

The compromise represents a remarkable turnaround for negotiators tasked with staving off another shutdown, just hours after lawmakers on both sides said the talks were on the brink of falling apart.

"We reached an agreement in principle between us on all the homeland security and the other six bills," said Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), a lead Republican negotiator. “The White House has been consulted all along,” Shelby added, noting that he’s been given “latitude” to negotiate on behalf of the administration.

The tentative deal includes $1.375 billion for physical barriers — a type of fencing that resembles the “steel slats” that Trump has specifically called for, according to a congressional aide briefed on the talks. It includes a total of 55 miles, which is just 9 miles shy of Trump’s last budget request.

In exchange, Democrats agreed to drop their demand to restrict the number of people who can be detained by Immigration and Custom Enforcement at a time. Negotiators agreed to fund a total of 40,520 detention beds for ICE, a roughly 17 percent reduction from current levels, the aide said.

But one Republican source was quick to dispute Democrats' account, saying the $1.375 billion in barrier funding can be used for "new miles of border wall." The same Republican source suggested that the deal had enough flexibility to actually reach the president's requested level of 52,000 beds, far above the negotiated level.

Details of the final deal may not be released until Wednesday, which has both parties aggressively attempting to spin the proposal as a win.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-spain-politics-election/spanish-pm-to-announce-snap-election-soon-after-budget-vote-sources-idUSKCN1Q1287

Spain’s minority Socialist government plans to announce an early general election after its expected defeat in a budget vote on Wednesday following its refusal to negotiate Catalan self-determination, political sources said on Tuesday.

Two small Catalan pro-independence parties, on whose votes the government has been relying to pass legislation, have so far maintained their blanket rejection of the budget.

They said they were open to negotiate until the budget vote if the government promised them a dialogue on the right to self-determination, but that right is prohibited by the Spanish constitution.

North Macedonia name change enters force

https://www.dw.com/en/north-macedonia-name-change-enters-force/a-47487844

The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia has formally renamed itself the Republic of North Macedonia, the government in Skopje said on Tuesday.

The amendment that changed the country's name became law with its publication in the official gazette, a month after the parliament approved the move.

North Macedonia also formally notified the United Nations about the name change, the government said.

The move ends a long-running dispute between North Macedonia and its southern neighbor, Greece, and has opened a path for Skopje to join the NATO military alliance and the European Union.

Ex-astronaut Mark Kelly to run for John McCain's Senate seat
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-47215775

Former US astronaut Mark Kelly has launched a 2020 Democratic campaign for the late Senator John McCain's Arizona seat in Congress.

Mr Kelly, 54, is married to former Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who retired after being shot during a 2011 mass shooting.

The couple became well-known gun control advocates following the attack.

But in his Tuesday launch video, the Navy veteran focused his platform on healthcare, jobs and climate change.

"It becomes pretty obvious pretty early when you get into space that we're all kind of in this together," Mr Kelly says in the video.

Currently, that seat is held by Republican Martha McSally, who was appointed by the Republican Arizona Governor, Doug Ducey, after Mr McCain's death.
