A bad night for the mainstream
https://www.bbc.com/news/live/world-europe-48389690?

It's a very mixed picture across Europe, but many of the established players have lost out. In Germany, the Greens have gained at the expense of the governing centre centre left; in Italy, the right-wing League has capitalised on its place in government and made significant gains.

At European level, the biggest centre groupings are set to lose dozens of seats together.

The centre-right European People's Party is projected to be the largest party with 178 MEPs - but that's a loss of 43 seats.

The Socialists and Democrats on the centre left are likewise projected to lose 39 seats, down to 152.

Other parties are benefiting from this swing.

Austria's Kurz faces axe as far right opts to back no-confidence motion

https://reut.rs/2K7LJjm

VIENNA (Reuters) - Austria’s parliament appeared all but certain to sack conservative Chancellor Sebastian Kurz on Monday after lawmakers from the far-right Freedom Party (FPO) agreed to support a motion of no-confidence in his caretaker government.

Kurz’s People’s Party came out on top in Sunday’s European Parliament election, only a week after a video sting scandal prompted far-right Vice Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache to step down and Kurz to scrap the coalition between their parties.

Kurz now heads a caretaker government that he hopes to use as a springboard for re-election, presenting himself as more of a victim of the political crisis set off by the video than an enabler of it who brought the far right to power.

Austrian chancellor loses no confidence vote
https://knowherenews.com/event/1aeef0bc-1d5a-4cdd-9f89-ce2c6133b01c

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz and his government lost a no-confidence vote in parliament on Monday, which will result in a caretaker government taking power until new elections in September.

Just a simple majority was required to pass the vote tabled by the opposition Social Democrats to remove Kurz and his Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), who have been in power since May 2017. Kurz' disgruntled former coalition partner, the right-wing Freedom Party (FPÖ), joined the opposition in bringing him down.

Peter Pilz, an environmentalist MP, introduced the measure after the ruling coalition between the ÖVP and FPÖ was overtaken by a corruption scandal on May 17.

A video emerged earlier this month depicting FPÖ leader Heinz-Christian Strache, the Austria's now-former vice chancellor, offering public contracts and political favors to an investigator posing as the niece of a Russian oligarch in return for bribes. The scandal has been dubbed Ibizagate after the Spanish island on which the video was filmed.

Only a week after the video became public, Strache stepped down as vice chancellor, and Kurz ended the partnership between the two parties.

Before Monday's no-confidence vote, Kurz defended his government's accomplishments before parliament, saying: "I am very proud and satisfied with the work we have done as a government in the past year and a half."

In spite of the scandal, the ÖVP came out on top in Austria during Sunday's European Parliament election.

Macron and Merkel at odds over EU top jobs after European elections

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/may/27/european-elections-macron-merkel-at-odds-over-eu-top-jobs-manfred-weber-juncker

Paris and Berlin appear on a collision course over the replacement of Jean-Claude Juncker as president of the European commission after poor results for the centre-right in the European elections damaged Angela Merkel’s choice for the post.

The German chancellor’s backing for the German MEP Manfred Weber, who leads the European People’s party of which her CDU party is a member, is facing tough resistance from the French president Emmanuel Macron in the post-election jockeying for top jobs.

The EU heads of state and government, including Theresa May, are due to meet on Tuesday night to kickstart their discussions over the leadership of the bloc’s institutions after a set of election results that weakened the grip of the traditional centrist parties on the levers of power in Brussels.

The European People’s party (EPP) remains the largest in the parliament, but during a disappointing night its haul of seats plummeted from 221 in 2014 to 180, prompting Weber to concede that the “centre is shrinking”.

The EPP, however, retains its position as the largest group, prompting Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, the leader of Merkel’s CDU party, to insist on Monday that Weber was the “lead candidate and he is our man for European Commission president – and we have achieved this goal”.

Under the so-called spitzenkandidat system, which was used to appoint Juncker in 2014, the candidate of the largest party is expected to take the top commission post.

But Macron, who has long insisted he will not be beholden to that process, instead sought to steal a march on the centre-right on Monday by opening talks with the Spanish prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, in an attempt to form a “progressive alliance”. The two men were due to have dinner together in Paris on Monday evening.

Democrats claim victory as Trump gets battered in court

https://thehill.com/regulation/court-battles/445498-democrats-claim-victory-as-trump-gets-battered-in-court

President Trump took a beating in federal court last week, losing a pair of lawsuits aimed at hindering House Democrats' investigations into him and his administration.

The decisions indicated that Trump will ultimately lose the fights: Both judges in the subpoena cases issued their rulings swiftly and decisively, underscoring the weakness of Trump's legal arguments.

The lawsuits were likely intended as Trump's attempt to delay Congress from being able to obtain the documents, taking advantage of the slow pace of the court system while keeping an eye on getting the cases up to the Supreme Court.

But the court victories are providing Democrats with momentum as they accelerate their Trump investigations — and providing fodder for party leaders to argue impeachment proceedings aren’t necessary as they make legal headways.
