US labels Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard Corps a 'terror group'

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/04/designates-iran-elite-irgc-terrorist-organisation-trump-190408141756166.html

President Donald Trump announced on Monday that the United States is designating Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) a foreign "terrorist organisation", marking the first time Washington has formally labelled another country's military a "terrorist group".

Responding to the move, Iran immediately declared the US as "state sponsor of terrorism" and US forces in the region "terrorist groups", state media reported.

Iran also condemned the US decision as an illegal act prompted by Tehran's regional influence and "success in fighting against Islamic State," Iranian state TV said, referring to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS).

The US has already blacklisted dozens of entities and people for affiliations with the IRGC, but not the organisation as a whole.

Trump on Monday confirmed earlier reports that the US was planning the designation, saying it will continue to increase financial pressure and raise the costs on Iran "for its support of terrorist activity".

Brexit: Theresa May meets Angela Merkel for delay request
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-47861605

Theresa May is holding last-minute Brexit talks with the leaders of Germany and France, with the UK due to leave the EU in three days time.

Mrs May met Angela Merkel in Berlin, and will meet Emmanuel Macron in Paris, as she urges both to back her request to delay Brexit again until 30 June.

No 10 said the PM and Chancellor Merkel agreed "on the importance of ensuring Britain's orderly withdrawal".

There is a summit on Wednesday when all EU states will vote on an extension.

Cross-party talks aimed at breaking the impasse are also set to continue.

The negotiating teams will be joined by Chancellor Philip Hammond, Environment Secretary Michael Gove and shadow chancellor John McDonnell, with the Labour frontbencher saying they hoped to "broaden the talks".

But in a leaked letter seen by the Telegraph, International Trade Secretary Liam Fox has warned that agreeing with Labour over its demand for a customs union is the "worst of both worlds" and will leave Britain unable to set its own trade policy.

The UK is currently due to leave the EU at 23:00 BST on Friday.

Israeli election: Netanyahu and Gantz both claim victory
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-47874948

Exit polls in Israel suggest there will be no clear winner in the closely fought general election.

The centrist Blue and White alliance of former military chief Benny Gantz was projected to win 36 or 37 seats, with the Likud party of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu taking 33 to 36.

Both men have claimed victory.

Two exit polls predicted that right-wing parties allied to Mr Netanyahu were more likely to be able to form a governing coalition.

But a third exit poll predicted that the bloc would be tied with centre-left parties allied to Mr Gantz.

Brexit: Donald Tusk suggests 'flexible' delay of up to a year
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-47874367

European Council president Donald Tusk says the EU should consider offering the UK a "flexible" delay to Brexit of up to a year, with the option of leaving earlier if a deal is ratified.

He said there was "little reason to believe" a Brexit deal would be approved by the extension deadline UK PM Theresa May has requested - 30 June.

Writing to EU leaders, he said any delay should have conditions attached.

It is up to EU members to vote on the proposals at a summit on Wednesday.

A draft EU document circulated to diplomats ahead of the emergency summit also proposes an extension but leaves the date of the proposed new deadline blank.

The BBC's Brussels correspondent Adam Fleming said the document referred to an extension lasting "only as long as is necessary and, in any event, no longer than XX.XX.XXXX and ending earlier if the withdrawal agreement is ratified".

Nielsen: Acting DHS Deputy Grady offers resignation
https://www.politico.com/story/2019/04/09/claire-grady-offers-resignation-1264195

Claire Grady, the acting Homeland Security Department deputy secretary, has offered to resign, according to outgoing Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

“Acting Deputy Secretary Claire Grady has offered the President her resignation, effective tomorrow,” Nielsen tweeted Tuesday evening. “For the last two years, Claire has served @DHSgov w excellence and distinction. She has been an invaluable asset to DHS – a steady force and a knowledgeable voice.”

The resignation comes amid a broader Homeland Security staff shakeup pushed by White House senior adviser Stephen Miller. President Donald Trump on Sunday announced that Nielsen would step down from her post. Days before, the White House pulled its nominee to lead Immigration and Customs Enforcement, with Trump pledging to go in a “tougher direction.”

Miller has pressed to remove other immigration officials in recent days, including U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Francis Cissna and General Counsel John Mitnick, although hard-line immigration groups have rallied around Cissna.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu clinched a clear electoral victory Wednesday morning, with some 97 percent of votes showing his Likud party tied with Blue and White, but the right-wing bloc with a decisive lead and Netanyahu thus safely en route to forming a governing coalition.

With more than four million votes counted as of 9 a.m., Likud had snagged 26.27% of the vote, or 35 seats in the 120-seat legislature — the party’s best result since the 2003 election (when it won 38 seats under Ariel Sharon), and its best under Netanyahu.

With 5 right-wing and ultra-Orthodox parties managing to get some 30 seats together, though, Netanyahu could confidently work to form a government similar to his current right-wing coalition, with a solid 65 seats.

India election 2019: Voting to begin in world's largest election

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-47878085

Indians will head to the polls on Thursday to vote in the first phase of a general election that is being seen as a referendum on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Tens of millions of Indians across 20 states and union territories will cast their votes in 91 constituencies.

The seven-phase vote to elect a new lower house of parliament will continue until 19 May. Counting day is 23 May.

With 900 million eligible voters, this is the largest election ever seen.

Mr Modi's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won a historic landslide in the last elections in 2014.

The Lok Sabha, or lower house of parliament has 543 elected seats and any party or coalition needs a minimum of 272 MPs to form a government.

Brexit: UK and EU agree Brexit delay to 31 October
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-47889404

The UK and the EU have agreed a "flexible extension" of Brexit until 31 October, European Council president Donald Tusk has said.

The agreement was reached after five hours of talks at an emergency EU summit in Brussels.

Mr Tusk said his "message to British friends" would be "please do not waste this time".

Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said the UK must now hold European elections in May, or leave on 1 June without a deal.

The PM earlier told leaders she wanted to move the UK's exit date from Friday to 30 June.

Mr Tusk told reporters at a 2:15 local time (1:15 BST) press conference that during the time of the extension, "the cause of action will be entirely in the UK's hands: they can still ratify the withdrawal agreement, in which case the extension can be termination".

He said the UK could also rethink its strategy or choose to revoke Article 50 and "cancel Brexit all together".

The EU had been split over the length of delay to offer the UK and by law they had to reach a unanimous decision.

Julian Assange: Wikileaks co-founder arrested in London
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-47891737

Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange has been arrested at the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

Mr Assange took refuge in the embassy seven years ago to avoid extradition to Sweden over a sexual assault case that has since been dropped.

The Met Police said he was arrested for failing to surrender to the court and following a US extradition request.

Ecuador's president said it withdrew his asylum after repeated violations of international conventions.

But Wikileaks tweeted that Ecuador had acted illegally in terminating Mr Assange's political asylum "in violation of international law".

Mr Assange was initially taken to a central London police station before appearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday afternoon.

Omar al-Bashir: Sudan military coup topples ruler after protests

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-47891470

After nearly 30 years in power, Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir has been ousted and arrested, the defence minister says.

Speaking on state TV, Awad Ibn Ouf said the army had decided to oversee a two-year transitional period followed by elections.

He also said a three-month state of emergency was being put in place.

Protests against Mr Bashir, who has governed Sudan since 1989, have been under way for several months.

Meanwhile, the main group that has been organising the demonstrations called for them to continue on Thursday, despite the military intervention.

"I announce as minister of defence the toppling of the regime and detaining its chief in a secure place," Mr Ibn Ouf said in a statement.

It is not clear where Mr Bashir is being held.

Mr Ibn Ouf said the country had been suffering from "poor management, corruption, and an absence of justice" and he apologised "for the killing and violence that took place".

Finland election: Leftist party tipped to win vote

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-47893264

Finland is tipped to turn left in Sunday's election, with the Social Democrats leading in polls.

Should they be successful, the country will have its first left-wing leader in 20 years.

But with several parties, including the right-wing Finns, jostling closely for second place, the Social Democrats' ability to govern could be curtailed and coalition-building lies ahead.

How did we get here?
Last month, former Prime Minister Juha Sipila's government resigned over its failure to achieve a key policy goal on social welfare and healthcare reform. His Centre Party had been in a centre-right coalition government since the last parliamentary elections in 2015.

Concerned about Finland's expensive welfare system in the face of an ageing population, Mr Sipila made tackling the nation's debt one of his government's main aims, introducing planning reforms he hoped would save up to €3bn (£2.6bn) over a decade.

But while the introduction of austerity measures - such as benefits cuts and pension freezes - resulted in Finland reducing its government debt for the first time in a decade last year, the reforms proved politically controversial.

Meanwhile, the Social Democratic Party, a centre-left party with strong links to Finland's trade unions, saw its popularity grow.

Brexit: Cross-party talks at delicate stage, says Lidington

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-47924023

"Movement on both sides" of cross-party talks is needed in order to resolve the Brexit deadlock, senior cabinet minister David Lidington has said.

He told the BBC the government had a "fair bit in common" with Labour but the process was proving "delicate" and could not be allowed to "drag on".

He said they were "testing" each other's ideas on acceptable future customs arrangements with the EU.

He also insisted replacing PM Theresa May would "not change the arithmetic".

Mr Lidington was speaking after former Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith called on the prime minister to stand down next month, amid what he said was real grassroots anger at the prospect of having to fight European elections in May.

Talks between the government and Labour are set to continue over the Easter recess in the hope of finding a Brexit agreement that will be acceptable to Parliament.

A series of working groups in key areas, such as the environmental standards, security and workers' rights, have been set up to try and find common ground.

Sudan crisis: Military council arrests former government members
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-47929137

Sudan's transitional military council has arrested members of the former government and promised not to disperse protesters.

A spokesman also urged the opposition to pick the next prime minister and vowed to implement their choice.

Months of protests in Sudan led to the ouster and arrest of long-time leader Omar al-Bashir on Thursday.

Demonstrators have vowed to stay on the streets until there is an immediate move to civilian rule.

A sit-in is continuing outside the defence ministry in the capital Khartoum.

In a press conference on Sunday, spokesman Maj Gen Shams Ad-din Shanto said the military council was "ready to implement" whatever civilian government the opposition parties agreed.

"We won't appoint a PM. They'll choose one," he said, referring to opposition and protest groups.

Finland election: Right-wing Finns Party finishes second
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-47893264

A centre-left party has won Finland's parliamentary election, while an anti-immigration right-wing party came second.

The Social Democratic Party took 17.7%, with the Finns Party on 17.5%.

"For the first time since 1999 we are the largest party in Finland," said SDP leader Antti Rinne.

The centre-right National Coalition is slightly behind the Finns Party while ex-PM Juha Sipila's Centre Party has seen its support plummet.

Voter turnout was 72%.

The Social Democrats have won 40 seats in the 200-seat parliament, one more than the Finns Party, and coalition-building lies ahead.

At the last election in 2015, the Finns Party won 38 seats, but MPs split after a leadership election in 2017 and some were expelled from the party.

Mueller report to be released Thursday

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/04/15/mueller-report-to-be-released-on-thursday-1275974

Attorney General William Barr is set to release on Thursday morning a redacted version of the report special counsel Robert Mueller submitted at the conclusion of his two-year Russia probe.

At that time, the report — which appears destined to cast a long shadow over President Donald Trump’s reelection bid regardless of its content — will be made available to Congress and the public, a Justice Department spokeswoman said Monday.

The nearly 400-page report will be immediately scrutinized for insight into why the special counsel did not establish a conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia, as well as Mueller’s reasoning for why he opted to not make a final ruling on whether the president obstructed justice.

While Trump has claimed “complete exoneration” based on Barr’s announcement that Mueller did not uncover a criminal Trump-Russia conspiracy or recommended obstruction-of-justice charges, the report could still contain fresh details about the Trump campaign’s contacts with Moscow-linked individuals and about the president’s attempts to stymie investigators.

Mueller’s findings won’t be released to the public in full, however. Instead, the version of the report set for release is expected to include a series of redactions made by Justice Department and special counsel lawyers.

The withheld information will cover four categories: secret grand jury details, classified national security and intelligence specifics, material related to ongoing investigations and passages that could defame “peripheral” third-party figures caught up in Mueller’s probe.

Bernie Sanders' tax returns show he became millionaire after 2016 White House run
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-sanders/bernie-sanders-tax-returns-show-he-became-millionaire-after-2016-white-house-run-idUSKCN1RR2CJ

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Democratic presidential contender Bernie Sanders released 10 years of tax returns on Monday, providing details of his growing status as a millionaire fueled by a sharp jump in income from book royalties since his losing 2016 White House run.

Sanders, a U.S. senator who routinely rails against the “millionaires and billionaires” he says have rigged the system to protect their wealth and power, had an adjusted gross income of $561,293 in 2018, $1,131,925 in 2017 and $1,062,626 in 2016, the returns showed.

He augmented his Senate salary with book royalties in each of those years, particularly in 2016 and 2017 when he made more than $800,000 each year in royalties. Sanders has published three books since the start of his first White House run, including bestsellers “Our Revolution” and “Where We Go From Here.”

In 2014, the year before he launched his first presidential campaign, Sanders had an adjusted gross income of $205,271.

Sanders had faced mounting pressure to release his taxes, with critics saying the democratic socialist’s millionaire status undercut his populist economic message. He has made no apologies for his financial well-being.

“It comes from a book I wrote, pretty good book,” Sanders told a Fox News Channel town hall on Monday. “If anyone thinks that I should apologize for writing a best-selling book, I’m sorry, I’m not going to do it.”
