Paul Manafort: Ex-Trump chief gets 43 more months in jail
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-47559410

US President Donald Trump's former campaign chief Paul Manafort has been jailed for 43 more months on charges stemming from the Russia investigation.

It comes a week after the 69-year-old was given a 47-month prison sentence for fraud in a separate case.

The latest sentencing arises from two conspiracy charges Manafort pleaded guilty to last year.

Speaking from a wheelchair, he told the federal court in Washington DC that he wanted to apologise for his actions.

In a separate development, Wednesday also saw Manafort charged in New York with residential mortgage fraud and other crimes.

On Wednesday, US District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson sentenced Manafort to a total of 73 months, of which 30 were to run concurrently with last week's sentence.

Before sentencing, the judge said it was "hard to overstate" the number of lies and the amount of fraud involved.

"The defendant is not public enemy number one," she said. "But he is not a victim either."

In the courtroom, Manafort said: "I am sorry for what I have done and for all the activities that have gotten us here today.

"This case has taken everything from me already - my properties, my cash, my life insurance, trust accounts for my children and grandchildren, and even more."

Brexit: MPs vote to reject no-deal Brexit

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-47562995

MPs will vote on Thursday on delaying Brexit after they rejected the idea of leaving the EU without a deal.

In a night of high drama in the Commons, MPs surprised the government and voted by 312 to 308 to reject a no-deal Brexit under any circumstances.

The vote is not binding - under current law the UK could still leave without a deal on 29 March.

On Thursday, MPs will vote on whether to ask the EU for permission to delay the date for departure.

There could be a short extension - or a much longer one - depending on whether MPs backed the prime minister's existing withdrawal deal that has been agreed with the EU by 20 March, the government says.

That means Theresa May could make a third attempt to get her deal through Parliament in the next few days.

Brexit: PM to bring third Brexit deal vote to Commons

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-47564793

Theresa May will make a third attempt to get her EU withdrawal deal through Parliament in the next week.

She told MPs that if her deal fails again to get their backing, a lengthy delay to Brexit may be needed.

The prime minister's warning comes ahead of a Commons vote later on whether to ask the EU for permission to delay Brexit beyond 29 March.

MPs voted on Wednesday evening to reject a no-deal Brexit under any circumstances.

No date has yet been set for the third so-called "meaningful vote".

Trump faces Senate revolt in vote on border emergency

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-47569425

President Donald Trump's declaration of an emergency on the US-Mexico border looks likely to be dealt a blow by dissident Republican senators.

Several members of the president's own party are expected to rebel when the Senate votes on Thursday on a proposal to revoke his declaration.

The Democratic-controlled House of Representatives last month backed the measure.

Mr Trump warned he was ready to veto the resolution.

Hungary's Orban asks European conservatives not to expel his party

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-hungary-eu-orban-apology/hungarys-orban-asks-european-conservatives-not-to-expel-his-party-idUSKCN1QV17Q

BUDAPEST (Reuters) - Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has written apology letters to European politicians who called for the expulsion of his Fidesz party from the main European conservative group, but at least one of them said it wasn’t good enough.

Thirteen conservative parties have demanded Fidesz be expelled from the European People’s Party over an anti-immigration and anti-EU campaign that attacked European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, a fellow EPP member, and U.S. philanthropist George Soros.

The EPP, made up of the main center-right parties in most European countries, is the biggest group in the European parliament, expected to keep that status in European elections in May giving it a big say in naming Juncker’s successor.

According to a copy of one letter seen by Reuters on Thursday, Orban asked the leader of the Flemish Christian Democrats, Wouter Beke, to reconsider his call to eject Fidesz. A Hungarian government spokesman said similar letters were sent to leaders of the other 12 parties who have made similar calls.

Beto O'Rourke leaps into 2020 Democratic presidential race

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-orourke/beto-orourke-leaps-into-2020-democratic-presidential-race-idUSKCN1QV13C

(Reuters) - Former Texas congressman Beto O’Rourke joined the 2020 presidential race on Thursday, ending months of speculation about whether he would join the throng of Democrats vying for the chance to run against President Donald Trump.

Announcing his candidacy in an online video, O’Rourke, who gained a national following with his long-shot election battle against U.S. Senator Ted Cruz last year, pledged to tackle “the interconnected crises in our economy, our democracy and our climate”.

“This moment of peril produces, perhaps, the greatest moment of promise for this country,” he said in the video which was posted on the El Paso Times website.

O’Rourke is expected to immediately set out on a campaign swing through Iowa, which holds the first Democratic nominating contest in February 2020.

Senate deals blow to Trump in vote to terminate border emergency

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/03/14/romney-alexander-national-emergency-1221317

The Senate delivered a stunning bipartisan rebuke to Donald Trump on Thursday when 12 Republicans joined Democrats in voting to overturn the president's national emergency declaration.

In a 59-41 vote, the Senate approved a House passed-resolution to block Trump from funding his border wall without congressional approval. The GOP revolt will force Trump to issue the first veto of his presidency.

The Republican defections present an embarrassment to the White House, which sought to limit the number of senators breaking with their party. Some Republican senators attempted to strike a deal with the White House that could have curbed the number of Republicans breaking with the president, but those talks fell through.

Shortly after the Senate vote, Trump tweeted: "I look forward to VETOING the just passed Democrat inspired Resolution which would OPEN BORDERS while increasing Crime, Drugs, and Trafficking in our Country." He further thanked "all of the Strong Republicans who voted to support Border Security and our desperately needed WALL!"

In addition to Romney and Alexander, Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Rand Paul of Kentucky, Mike Lee of Utah, Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania and Jerry Moran of Kansas, Rob Portman of Ohio, Marco Rubio of Florida, Roger Wicker of Mississippi and Roy Blunt of Missouri voted in favor of the House resolution.

Brexit: MPs vote by a majority of 211 to seek delay to EU departure

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-47576813

MPs have voted by 413 to 202 - a majority of 211 - for Prime Minister Theresa May to ask the EU for a delay to Brexit.

It means the UK may not now leave on 29 March as previously planned.

Mrs May says Brexit could be delayed by three months, to 30 June, if MPs back her deal in a vote next week.

If they reject her deal again then she says she will seek a longer extension - but any delay has to be agreed by the 27 other EU member states.

Most Conservative MPs voted against delaying Brexit - including seven cabinet members - meaning Mrs May had to rely on Labour and other opposition votes to get it through.

Brexit Article 50: Tusk to ask EU to consider long extension
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-47557216

European Council President Donald Tusk has said he will appeal to EU leaders "to be open to a long extension" of the Brexit deadline, if the UK needs to rethink its strategy and get consensus.

His intervention came as UK MPs voted to seek a delay of the 29 March deadline to leave the EU.

EU leaders meet in Brussels on 21 March and they would have the final say.

Prime Minister Theresa May has said that if her Brexit deal is not approved a longer extension may be necessary.

After two resounding defeats in the House of Commons, she will make another attempt by 20 March to push through her Withdrawal Agreement with the EU.

MPs backed a government motion on Thursday to extend the two-year deadline to 30 June if the Mrs May's deal is passed next week, while noting that a longer extension would be necessary if it is rejected.

All 27 other EU nations would have to agree to an extension, and Mr Tusk, who is the bloc's summit chairman, will hold talks with several leaders ahead of next week's Brussels meeting.

While European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has insisted that any postponement "should be complete before the European elections" at the end of May, Mr Tusk made clear a longer delay was on the cards.

Thailand election: Long queues for day of early voting
https://www.dw.com/en/thailand-election-long-queues-for-day-of-early-voting/a-47953056

Hundreds of thousands of Thais queued to vote early on Sunday in parliamentary elections not scheduled for another week.

"It feels good to use our democratic right," said 29-year-old Adulwit Sinthusiri, one of the 2.6 million Thais who registered for the one-day-only advanced polling ahead of the March 24 main vote.

Schools, parking lots and temples, which were turned into polling stations for the day, closed at 5 p.m. local time (1000 UTC), with many reporting long queues throughout the day.

Many voters are hoping for a return to full civilian rule after Thailand's powerful military seized power in May 2014 — the country's 12th coup d'etat since 1932. The army promised to restore order and reconcile the country's sharp political divisions before allowing democracy to resume.

Israel bans right-wing candidate from general election
https://www.dw.com/en/israel-bans-right-wing-candidate-from-general-election/a-47956646

Israel's highest court voted on Sunday to ban Michael Ben Ari from running in the country's April 9 general election. The leader of the Jewish Power party was disqualified in an 8-1 vote because of his anti-Arab ideology.

Ben-Ari had been approved by Israel's election committee to run, but the opposition left-wing Meretz party successfully appealed the decision to the Supreme Court.

The country's attorney general, who shares the Court's sentiment, had accused Ben-Ari of "inciting on an ethnic-nationalistic basis against the Arab population" and "calling for a violent renunciation of the Arab population's rights."

The American Jewish Committee (AJC) welcomed the Court's decision to prevent the Jewish Power leader from running in the upcoming election.

"The party and its leadership seek to undermine the ideals of democracy, equality, and peace on which the State of Israel was founded. They have no place in the Knesset," Avi Mayer, Assistant Executive Director of the AJC, told DW.

Jewish Power is part of an election alliance with Israel's right-wing governing party, Likud, which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hopes will help secure him a record fifth term.

Brexit: No new vote on May's deal without DUP support - chancellor
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-47602746

Theresa May's Brexit deal will not return to the Commons this week unless it has support from the DUP and Tory MPs, the chancellor says.

The PM's plan is expected to be voted on for a third time in the coming days.

But Philip Hammond told the BBC's Andrew Marr that it would only be put to MPs if "enough of our colleagues and the DUP are prepared to support it".

He did not rule out a financial settlement for Northern Ireland if the DUP backed the deal.

The party, which has 10 MPs in the Commons, negotiated £1bn in spending for Northern Ireland as part of a confidence and supply agreement with the Tories - giving the government a working majority.

Mr Hammond said they did not have the numbers "yet" to secure Mrs May's deal, adding: "It is a work in progress".

But he warned that, even with the DUP's support, a "short extension" would be needed to pass legislation in Parliament, adding that it was now "physically impossible" for the UK to leave the EU on 29 March.

The shadow chancellor, John McDonnell, said Mrs May risked "destroying all confidence in our political system" if her government was planning to give the DUP "another bung".

New Zealand attack: cabinet meets to work on gun law changes
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/mar/17/new-zealand-shooting-cabinet-to-begin-work-to-change-gun-laws

New Zealand’s cabinet will meet on Monday morning to begin work to change gun laws, as the country continued to grapple with Friday’s attacks in Christchurch, which left at least 50 people dead.

Prime minster Jacinda Ardern said on Sunday that gun regulation would be discussed, telling reporters: “We cannot be deterred from the work we need to do on our gun laws in New Zealand. They need to change.”

Civilians in New Zealand own an estimated 1.2m firearms, making the country’s per capita rate of gun ownership higher than Australia’s, but still far below the US. It is alleged that the suspect in the attack, Australian Brenton Tarrant, had a firearms licence and five guns.

As tributes were paid to the victims, 34 people remained in hospital, including a four-year-old girl who is in a critical condition.

Utrecht shooting: manhunt after suspect opens fire on tram
[url]https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/mar/18/utrecht-shooting-tram-dutch-netherlands?/url]

Dutch police say they suspect a possible terrorist motive to a shooting on a tram in the city of Utrecht that left several people injured, at least three seriously.

The Netherlands’ national terror coordinator raised the alert level in Utrecht province to its maximum after the incident, which took place at about 10.45 am, saying terrorism could not be excluded. A manhunt is under way for the suspect or suspects, and local schools were ordered to keep their doors closed until further notice.

The scene at a tram stop on the city’s central 24 Oktoberplein junction has been cordoned off and a police anti-terror unit and emergency services are attending, Dutch media reported. Three police helicopters were also despatched to the area
