So.... about those polls

Annabel Crabb has just asked Andrew Probyn something that a lot of you were thinking.

It is probably the question voiced most commonly around households this evening. It comes from Matt in the Belconnen who asks: Should anyone trust an opinion poll ever again?

Here's the response:

Before I came on set, I was talking to a senior Liberal, this person knows who they are, and was convinced they were heading for defeat.

This person had been informed by internal polling, public polling.

The view across the political landscape was that Labor was going to win.

This is a shambles when it comes to the opinion polling.

Something's obviously gone really crook with the sampling internally and externally.

But a remarkable turn of events.

Austria's Sebastian Kurz calls for snap elections after corruption scandal
https://p.dw.com/p/3IiH4

Austrian Chancellor Kurz has requested new elections after a corruption scandal brought down his vice chancellor. Footage showed the far-right deputy allegedly offering contracts to a supposed Russian investor.

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz announced on Saturday that the country would have fresh elections in the wake of a major scandal involving now former-Vice Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache.

Kurz praised his own Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) for seeing through many of its campaign promises with the help of Strache's far-right Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), but the chancellor said that "enough is enough" after the latest FPÖ embarrassment.

"I promised voters I would remain true to myself, no matter what," Kurz said, declaring that he had withdrawn the ÖVP from the government. "I said I would always do what is right and what is necessary."

Germany's Der Spiegel newsmagazine and daily Süddeutsche Zeitung first published a video on Friday that showed Strache offering to give an alleged Russian investor lucrative contracts in exchange for helping his far-right Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) in the 2017 national elections.

The video was taken undercover on the Spanish island of Ibiza in the months before the October 2017 elections that would see the FPÖ become the junior coalition partner to Kurz's conservative ÖVP.

Brexit: Theresa May plans 'bold offer' to get support for deal
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-48323522

Theresa May says she intends to make a "bold offer" to MPs in a final attempt to get them to approve her Brexit deal in the next few weeks.

Extra protections for workers are expected to be among the proposals, with Mrs May trying to win over the support of some Labour MPs.

The PM needs to secure cross-party support for her EU Withdrawal Agreement Bill, which will be voted on in June.

This comes after the government's talks with Labour over Brexit broke down.

Mrs May announced this week that MPs will vote on the bill - which would bring the withdrawal agreement into UK law - in the week beginning 3 June. If the bill is not passed, the default position is that the UK will leave the EU on 31 October without a deal.

Writing in The Sunday Times, Mrs May said she will "not be simply asking MPs to think again" on the same deal that they have repeatedly rejected - but on "an improved packaged of measures that I believe can win new support".

The PM said she wanted MPs to consider a "new and improved deal with fresh pairs of eyes - and to give it their support".

Swiss voters approve tax and pension overhaul: TV

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-swiss-tax/swiss-voters-approve-tax-and-pension-overhaul-tv-idUSKCN1SP0AO

ZURICH (Reuters) - Swiss voters easily approved on Sunday a shake-up of the country’s corporate tax system, heading off what its finance minister had called an existential threat to Switzerland’s role as a business hub, projections for Swiss broadcaster SRF showed.

The projections from the gfs.bern polling outfit saw the measure passing in the binding referendum by a 66-34 percent margin.

The vote on tax reform and pension finance defuses a long-running row over favorable Swiss tax rates for multinational corporations. Acceptance was vital to prevent the country being branded a low-tax pariah, Finance Minister Ueli Maurer has said.

Two years ago, under the Swiss system of direct democracy, voters rejected an attempt to overhaul the tax system, which critics say gives the country an unfair advantage in attracting global companies.

Under pressure from the European Union and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, the Swiss had promised to meet international standards and eliminate special low tax rates that benefit around 24,000 foreign companies based in Switzerland.

Swiss voters approve tighter gun control: TV
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-swiss-eu-guns/swiss-voters-approve-tighter-gun-control-tv-idUSKCN1SP0AA

ZURICH (Reuters) - Swiss voters agreed on Sunday to adopt tighter gun controls in line with changes to European Union rules, heading off a clash with Brussels, projections for Swiss broadcaster SRF showed.

The projections from the gfs.bern polling outfit saw the measure passing in the binding referendum by a comfortable 67-33% margin.

The restrictions, which apply to non-EU member Switzerland because it is part of Europe’s Schengen open-border system, had raised hackles among shooting enthusiasts ahead of the vote under the Swiss system of direct democracy.

Failure to adopt the rules could have forced Switzerland to leave the passport-free Schengen zone and the Dublin joint system for handling asylum requests.

India election 2019: Exit polls suggest Narendra Modi back as PM
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-48328259

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is on course to win the general election, exit polls suggest.

The BJP and the main opposition Congress party battled it out with powerful regional rivals in a bruising campaign over seven phases of polling.

Results will be announced on 23 May. Analysts warn exit polls have often been wrong in the past.

Many saw the election as a referendum on Mr Modi who won a landslide in 2014.

A party or coalition needs 272 seats in parliament to form a government.

Four exit polls saw big wins for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), predicting that it would win anywhere between 280 and 315 seats, far more than the Congress party.

However, a Nielsen-ABP news channel poll suggested that the BJP alliance would win 267 seats, falling short of a majority.

This prediction comes despite its projection that the party would lose heavily in the bellwether state of Uttar Pradesh, which sends 80 MPs to parliament, more than any other.

Trump tweets threat: 'If Iran wants to fight, that will be the end of Iran'
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/may/19/mitt-romney-dismisses-threat-war-iran

Donald Trump has issued one of his most direct threats yet to Tehran, warning that “if Iran wants to fight, that will be the official end of Iran”.

The US president emerged from his golf club in Sterling, Virginia, on Sunday to tweet belligerently at around 4.30pm, thereby risking a quickening of tension that is already rising.

“Never threaten the United States again!” he wrote.

The tweet will do little to assuage jitters in the Middle East and in Washington about aggressive language coming out of the White House. Concern is already running high that Trump’s hawkish national security adviser, John Bolton, who played a key role in instigating the invasion of Iraq under George Bush, might be nudging the administration towards military action.

Earlier on Sunday, the Utah senator and former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney had joined the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in dismissing the threat of war.

“Going to war with Iran?” Romney asked on CNN’s State of the Union. “Not going to happen.”

According to the Fars news agency, Major General Hossein Salami followed foreign minister Mohammed Javad Zarif by saying Iran was not pursuing war either.

But both men offered caveats.

Exclusive: Google suspends some business with Huawei after Trump blacklist - source

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-huawei-tech-alphabet-exclusive/exclusive-google-suspends-some-business-with-huawei-after-trump-blacklist-source-idUSKCN1SP0NB

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Alphabet Inc’s Google has suspended business with Huawei that requires the transfer of hardware, software and technical services except those publicly available via open source licensing, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Sunday, in a blow to the Chinese technology company that the U.S. government has sought to blacklist around the world.

A Google spokesperson said the company is “complying with the order and reviewing the implications” without giving details.

The move could hobble Huawei’s smartphone business outside China as the tech giant will immediately lose access to updates to Google’s Android operating system. Future versions of Huawei smartphones that run on Android will also lose access to popular services including the Google Play Store and Gmail and YouTube apps.

“Huawei will only be able to use the public version of Android and will not be able to get access to proprietary apps and services from Google,” the source said.

Ukraine’s new president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, has taken the oath of office and immediately announced he is dissolving parliament and calling a snap election, aiming to win seats in a legislature still dominated by loyalists of his predecessor.

Zelenskiy, a comedian with no prior political experience, won the presidency by a landslide last month, but his party has no representation in parliament, making it expedient for him to call a vote while his popularity remains high.

He said his first task was to achieve a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine, where a five-year conflict with Russian-backed separatists has killed 13,000 people. Zelenskiy added that dialogue with Russia could only happen after the return of Ukrainian territory and prisoners of war.

Working with parliament will be crucial to his ability to meet the expectations of his voters and also pass reforms needed to keep foreign aid flowing.

Austrian far-right FPÖ quits Kurz government after sacking

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-48348651

Austria's far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ) has pulled out of the ruling coalition days after two top party figures were caught up in a secret video.

President Alexander Van der Bellen fired FPÖ Interior Minister Herbert Kickl, prompting the party's other ministers to resign in solidarity.

In the video, far-right leader Heinz-Christian Strache appears to offer government contracts to a woman in exchange for electoral support.

He has stood down as vice-chancellor.

The interior minister was not in the footage, but on Tuesday, President Van der Bellen fired him at the request of Chancellor Sebastian Kurz.

Mr Kurz is now attempting to replace all five ministers with technocrats - who he says will be experts in their field - to form an interim government.

The only exception is Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl, an independent picked by the FPÖ, who said she would remain in her post.

Mr Kurz, meanwhile, faces the prospect of a no-confidence vote on Monday amid the political chaos. A special session of the Austrian parliament has been tabled for 27 May.

Catalan jailed MPs attend Spain parliament opening

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-48348251

Five Catalan separatist politicians - currently on trial accused of rebellion - have taken their seats in the Spanish parliament under discreet police guard.

Four are lower-house MPs and one is a senator. The Spanish parliament has not witnessed such an event before.

The four MPs swore to uphold the Spanish constitution, but called the oath "a legal obligation" and demanded freedom for "political prisoners".

As they spoke, far-right and right-wing MPs shouted and hammered on benches.

Spanish media say the noise - mostly from far-right Vox MPs - drowned out the Catalans' oaths.

The parliamentary authorities are expected to suspend the four Catalan separatist MPs, urged to do so by the conservative Popular Party (PP) and centre-right Ciudadanos.

The four MPs - Josep Rull, Oriol Junqueras, Jordi Sànchez, Jordi Turull - and senator Raül Romeva are on trial for taking part in Catalonia's push for independence in 2017.

The Spanish Supreme Court decision to let them take up their seats in parliament under police escort was condemned by Catalan separatist leader Carles Puigdemont, a fugitive in Belgium.

They won seats in the Spanish general election on 28 April, in which the Socialists came top, but without a majority.

Brexit: PM says MPs have 'one last chance' to back her deal
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-48357017

Theresa May has said MPs have "one last chance" to deliver Brexit, urging them to back what she called a "new deal".

MPs will get a vote on whether to hold another referendum if they back the EU Withdrawal Agreement Bill, she said.

The bill also contains new guarantees on workers' rights, environmental protections and the Northern Irish border, as well a customs "compromise".

Labour said it was a "rehash" of existing plans and Tory Brexiteers took to social media to vent their anger.

Jacob Rees-Mogg said what was on offer was "worse than before", while Boris Johnson said the proposals contravened the party's 2017 general election manifesto, which ruled out the UK remaining in a customs union with the EU. He tweeted: "We can and must do better and deliver what the people voted for."

Jeremy Corbyn questioned whether any of it could be delivered given Mrs May had a short time left in office.

"It's basically a rehash of what was discussed before and it doesn't make any fundamental moves on market alignment or the customs union or indeed protection of rights," he said.

Ukraine president dissolves parliament, names lawyer with ties to tycoon chief of staff

https://www.dw.com/en/ukraine-president-dissolves-parliament-names-lawyer-with-ties-to-tycoon-chief-of-staff/a-48822516

After issuing a presidential decree dissolving Ukraine's parliament on Tuesday, newly-elected President Volodymyr Zelenskiy named lawyer Andriy Bogdan (pictured) head of his administration.

Both Zelenskiy and Bogdan, a lawyer, have close ties to Ihor Kolomoisky, one of Ukraine's richest men. Kolomoisky has been in a long legal battle with Ukrainian authorities over control of PrivatBank, the country's largest lender.

Bogdan, who was an advisor to Kolomoisky during the tycoon's tenure as a regional governor in 2014, also represented him in the PrivatBank case.

Kolomoisky, who owned PrivatBank until 2016, claims its nationalization that same year was illegal. Although a Kyiv court ruled in the tycoon's favor in April, the country's central bank has appealed the ruling.

The central bank claims that to reverse the process would put a $3.9 billion (€3.5 billion) loan program from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) at risk as well as negatively impacting investor confidence.

Zelenskiy, a 41-year-old former comedian with no political experience, has brushed off claims that he would favor Kolomoisky or offer him compensation in the PrivatBank case. The two men have longstanding business ties.

Brexit: Theresa May urges MPs to back her plan after backlash
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-48366977

In a statement outlining the Withdrawal Agreement Bill (WAB), the PM said there needed to be "compromise on all sides".

She said the bill - including the promise to give MPs a vote on a further referendum and different customs options - would be published on Friday.

But the plan has led to growing pressure from Tory MPs for her to resign.

The PM has pledged to set a timetable for a new leader to take over after MPs vote on her compromise Brexit plan in the week beginning 3 June.

However, some MPs are again seeking to change party rules, so they can vote to oust her at a meeting of backbench MPs later.
