Sudan crisis: Protesters cut ties with military council

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-48006015

Protest leaders in Sudan have said they have broken off contact with the ruling military council that replaced ousted leader Omar al-Bashir.

They accused it of being composed of "remnants" of Mr Bashir's regime.

Thousands of protesters have gathered outside army HQ in Khartoum for a meeting to announce a civilian council they now want to take power.

The military says it is committed to handing over power and will consider a joint military-civilian council.

The campaign to remove Mr Bashir has been spearheaded by the Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA) and it was behind the announcement of the civilian council.

The SPA held talks with the military on Saturday.

A senior SPA member, Ahmed al-Rabia, initially indicated this might delay the naming of the council but on Sunday he confirmed the announcement would go ahead at the Khartoum protest site.

The protesters want their new council to form a transitional government, leading to elections.

More than 60 per cent of Conservative Party members will vote for Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party in the European elections, according to a survey for a leading Tory website.

A similar poll showed that a high number of Tory councillors also planned to back their rivals, as the former Ukip leader continued to send shockwaves through Westminster.

Last week two polls suggested that Mr Farage’s new party was ahead of the Conservatives and Labour and heading for victory in the European parliament elections next month.

Mr Farage said yesterday that the main political parties had underestimated the extent of voters’ anger over the failure to leave the European Union. He added: “A lot of Conservatives are disgusted with what the party has done.”

Theresa May to face grassroots no-confidence challenge

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-48011201

Prime Minister Theresa May is to face an unprecedented no-confidence challenge - from Conservative grassroots campaigners.

More than 70 local association chiefs - angry at her handling of Brexit - have called for an extraordinary general meeting to discuss her leadership.

A non-binding vote will be held at that National Conservative Convention EGM.

Dinah Glover, chairwoman of the London East Area Conservatives, said there was "despair in the party".

She told the BBC: "I'm afraid the prime minister is conducting negotiations in such a way that the party does not approve."

The Conservative Party's 800 highest-ranking officers, including those chairing the local associations, will take part in the vote.

However, an EGM has to convene if more than 65 local associations demand one via a petition.

The current petition, which has passed the signature threshold, states: "We no longer feel that Mrs May is the right person to continue as prime minister to lead us forward in the [Brexit] negotiations.

Iran oil: US to end sanctions exemptions for major importers

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-48011496

US President Donald Trump has decided to end exemptions from sanctions for countries still buying oil from Iran.

The White House said waivers for China, India, Japan, South Korea and Turkey would expire in May, after which they could face US sanctions themselves.

This decision is intended to bring Iran's oil exports to zero, denying the government its main source of revenue.

Iran insisted the sanctions were illegal and that it had attached "no value or credibility" to the waivers.

In November, the US reimposed sanctions on Iran's energy, ship building, shipping, and banking sectors, which officials called "the core areas" of its economy.

However, six-month waivers from economic penalties were granted to the eight main buyers of Iranian crude - China, India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, Italy and Greece - to give them time to find alternative sources and avoid causing a shock to global oil markets.

Three of the eight buyers - Greece, Italy and Taiwan - have stopped importing Iranian oil. But the others had reportedly asked for their waivers to be extended.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Mr Trump's decision not to renew the waivers showed his administration was "dramatically accelerating our pressure campaign in a calibrated way that meets our national security objectives while maintaining well supplied global oil markets".

"We stand by our allies and partners as they transition away from Iranian crude to other alternatives," he added.

India election 2019: Narendra Modi votes in Ahmedabad

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-48010263

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has cast his vote in his home state of Gujarat in the third phase of the country's general election.

He led what appeared to be a roadshow on his way to the polling booth in Ahmedabad, the city he lived in during his 13 years as chief minister.

He waved at the crowds that had gathered from an open-top jeep, which had replaced his usual bulletproof car.

Mr Modi is contesting from Varanasi, which goes to the polls on 19 May.

Around 180 million people are eligible to vote on Tuesday - 117 seats spread across 15 states and union territories are up for grabs. It is the largest stage of the whole election, which is being seen as a referendum on Mr Modi, who has been in power since 2014.

MPs may vote on key Brexit legislation next week

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/apr/23/mps-may-vote-on-key-brexit-legislation-next-week-theresa-may

Theresa May is preparing to give MPs a vote on the key piece of legislation enacting Britain’s exit from the European Union next week, as negotiations with Labour continue.

The prime minister will discuss Brexit with her cabinet colleagues, with government sources suggesting one likely way forward is to table the withdrawal and implementation bill (WAB) in the next 10 days.

Downing Street continues to insist that it hopes to secure parliamentary ratification of a Brexit deal in time to avoid the UK having to participate in next month’s European parliament elections.

Bringing back the WAB, which parliament must pass in order to ratify May’s Brexit deal, would help to avoid the Speaker’s stricture that the government cannot hold another “meaningful vote” on an unchanged deal.

May’s official spokesman said: “Every day that parliament doesn’t ratify the withdrawal agreement, the harder it will be to avoid the European parliamentary elections, and the prime minister has made clear that she doesn’t believe it is in the country’s interests to take part in those elections.”

He said the government had spent a significant amount of time and work to get the bill ready.

Joe Biden Officially Announces 2020 Presidential Run

https://www.npr.org/2019/04/25/675382786/joe-biden-officially-announces-2020-presidential-run

After months of oscillating speculation, followed by a long ramp up that drew out uncomfortable reassessments of his long public career, former Vice President Joe Biden has announced that he will run for president in 2020.

Biden made the announcement in a video released on Thursday. He's expected to head to Pittsburgh, Pa., for a kickoff event next week, highlighting the focus the latest Democratic candidate places on winning back key states President Trump flipped in 2016.

The 76-year-old former Delaware senator immediately becomes a top contender vying for the Democratic nomination, four years after passing on a bid for the White House in the wake of his son Beau's death. However, he will surely face questions about his age, past positions on policing and actions toward women in the wake of the #MeToo era. Biden is the 20th candidate to enter the Democratic primary race.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/dec/29/barack-obama-sanctions-russia-election-hack

https://www.politico.com/story/2018/01/23/mitch-mcconnell-russia-obama-joe-biden-359531

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-apec-summit-usa-russia/trump-says-he-trusts-putins-denials-of-election-meddling-idUSKBN1DB04N

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-44852812

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-russia-cyber-idUSKBN19U0P4

https://www.apnews.com/6580a9fdf5364b46be462d73ed0c5422
https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/election-security-2018-715204/

2) 派FBI監聽Trump campaign?

Spain election: Polls due to open for closely-fought contest

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-48081540

Polls are due to open across Spain for the country's third general election in four years.

The vote is marked by the rise of the far right movement Vox, which opposes multiculturalism and threatens to end self rule for regions like Catalonia.

Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has presented himself as a bulwark against the advance of the hard right.

Polls suggest his party will lead the vote but no single group will win an overall majority.

The final opinion poll in El Pais newspaper last Monday put the Socialists (PSOE) at about 30%, the conservative People's Party (PP) at around 20%, the centre-right Ciudadanos and left-leaning Podemos both near 14% and the far right Vox party at about 11%.

However, the poll also showed that up to four in 10 voters had yet to make up their minds.

Deal reached for Northern Ireland power-sharing talks

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/apr/26/northern-ireland-fresh-attempt-to-restore-power-sharing

The British and Irish governments have reached an agreement to establish a new round of talks involving all the main political parties in Northern Ireland, starting on 7 May.

Theresa May and the taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, credited the public response to the killing of Lyra McKee with the announcement on Friday of a fresh attempt to restore power sharing in Northern Ireland.

The two leaders said in a joint statement that the journalist’s funeral in Belfast on Wednesday, which gathered all mainstream party leaders under the roof of St Anne’s Cathedral, encouraged them to try to break a two-year political deadlock.

“We … heard the unmistakable message to all political leaders that people across Northern Ireland want to see a new momentum for political progress. We agree that what is now needed is actions and not just words from all of us who are in positions of leadership.”

The new process would involve all the main political parties in Northern Ireland, together with the UK and Irish governments, the statement said.

“The aim of these talks is quickly to re-establish to full operation the democratic institutions of the Belfast/Good Friday agreement – the NI executive, assembly and north-south ministerial council – so that they can effectively serve all of the people for the future.”

Trump withdraws from UN arms treaty as NRA crowd cheers in delight

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/apr/26/trump-nra-united-nations-arms-treaty-gun-control

Donald Trump has announced that the US will withdraw its support for a United Nations treaty regulating the multibillion-dollar global arms trade.

Addressing the National Rifle Association (NRA) in Indianapolis, the president said he would revoke America’s status as a signatory of the arms trade treaty regulating conventional weapons including small arms, battle tanks, combat aircraft and warships.

“My administration will never ratify the UN arms trade treaty,” Trump said. “We’re taking our signature back. The United Nations will soon receive a formal notice that America is rejecting this treaty.”

Trump added: “Under my administration, we will never surrender American sovereignty to anyone. We will never allow foreign bureaucrats to trample on your second amendment freedom. I’m officially announcing today that the United States will be revoking the effect of America’s signature from this badly misguided treaty.”

The US signed the treaty in 2013 but never ratified it. The NRA has long claimed the treaty poses a threat to the second amendment. On Friday its members stood, applauded and chanted “USA! USA!” as Trump signed a letter to Congress halting the ratification process, then tossed his pen into the crowd.

A delighted Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action, said: “Barack Obama and John Kerry tried to force us to accept international gun control under the power of the UN, but Donald Trump has said: ‘Not on my watch.’”

But the move drew sharp criticism.

Spain election: Socialists win amid far-right breakthrough

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-48081540

PM Pedro Sánchez's party polled 29% and will need the help of either left-wing Podemos and regional parties or the centre right to form a government.

For the first time since military rule ended in the 1970s, a far-right party is set to enter parliament.

Vox opposes multiculturalism, feminism and unrestricted migration. With almost all the results in, Vox was on more than 10% of the vote, which would give it 24 seats in the 350-seat parliament.
