One more word of advice for those of you who received your British Citizenship via your parent and born outside of the UK. You are a British Citizen by descent, which means that you will not be able to automatically pass on your British Citizenship to your children born outside of the UK.

There are two ways to get British Citizenship for your children in this case -

1) Having the child in the UK. A child born in the UK with one British Citizen parent is a British Citizen otherwise than by descent. This means that your children can automatically pass down his/her British Citizenship to his/her child (your grandchild) born outside of the UK.

If you are going down this route, I would suggest the birth should take place in Northern Ireland. A child born in Northern Ireland with one British Citizen parent will be an Irish citizen, as well as British Citizen. As Ireland stays in the EU, having Irish citizenship means having EU freedom of movement after Brexit.

2) If you stay in the UK for three years before the birth of the child in Hong Kong, you can apply for a British Citizenship registration with the Home Office before the child turns 18. You will need to submit evidence of your stay in the UK in the application. Please keep such evidence like your P45 and P60, as well as council tax bills. Please note that a child register in this way is still a British Citizen by descent and cannot use the same method to register his/her child (i.e. your grandchild).

This is really helpful thank you bro

陶傑一講英國政治就覺得佢一係on9,一係日日睇daily mail

呢啲人唔需要聽啦

labour policy好多我都唔buy
但條友up d野一係conservatives smears, 一係dm headline....

btw where's the job, london?

Yes, london

bno or sar

I got both. But Bno is expired and not sure if its enough time for me to renew it b4 they help me to work on tier2 (hr said 2 mths)....
Any problem if using SAR ?

You should renew your BN(O) passport now using the link below -

https://www.gov.uk/overseas-passports

If you apply now and your case in not complex - i.e. you still have your old BN(O) passport, then the turnaround time is about 2 weeks. There is a post on how to renew your BN(O) passport in the travel section.

You then use your BN(O) passport to apply for your UK tier 2 visa, which means that you will be treated as a Commonwealth citizen in the UK. Using your BN(O) status in the UK have the following advantages -

1) register to vote in all UK elections - also helps you to build up your credit history in the UK.

you only need.your passport ready to get tier two
this is mid June
you have like three weeks to do that

These advantages are not great enough to justify paying money to get BNO renewal

Based on 2017 prices, Naturalisation fee £1282 / Registration fee £1163 - difference £119

32 page standard Passport fee - Hong Kong applications - £102.86.

Police registration fee - £34

So if you use your BN(O) passport for tier 2 visa and registration to become a British Citizen using form B(OTA) the cost is -

£102.86 - £119 = A saving of £16.14.

On the other hand, using your HKSAR for tier 2 and naturalisation to become a British Citizen, you will need to pay -

£119 + £34 = £153

Overall savings - £169.14.

I know for some bros that £169.14 is nothing, but my thinking is that the money is better in my pocket than in the government's!

Thanks for your information! I have not considered naturalisation, as it is too far down the path and not yet a goal of mine

it's just what... 180£ ?

Paying £180 just for right to vote and abstention from police registration is not attractive enough for me

Where you get the £180 from?

A standard 32 page British passport cost £102.86 - including the courier fee.

Right to vote is worth so much more

Right to vote in a country that I have not lived long in? Sorry that's not worth much to me

Being on the electoral roll is not just about voting in elections. Banks can check your credit history using the electoral roll.

I don't know what your goals are, but if you think of having Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) as your goal, you will need to know that ILR can be revoked if you left the UK for more than two years.

2) i have my driving license in HK n I have to exchange it in UK ? Can i do it in Hk?

Oh I found the answer.
https://www.skyscanner.com.hk/news/tips/the-complete-guide-to-convert-hk-driving-license-to-foreign-driving-licenses/

Thanks.

You will also need to get a certificate from the Hong Kong Department of Transport to say that your Hong Kong licence is based on the fact that you pass your driving test in Hong Kong. As far as I know that you will need to fill in TD320 in order to get the proof you need.

http://www.td.gov.hk/filemanager/common/td320(12.2016)_e-fillable_eng.pdf

You will need to ask the Transport Department how long that certificate is valid for and how much it costs.

As the Hong Kong driving licence does not have a photo of the holder, you may find it helpful to get an International Driving Permit from the Hong Kong Transport Department before coming to the UK.

http://www.td.gov.hk/filemanager/common/td51(2017.02)_e-fillable_eng.pdf

Thanks HKG brother🙇🏼🙇🏼
Btw, are you familiar with the agency performing background, credit check?
Like my case (resigned current role n going to work in a new job in HK until t2 visa is granted and i will resign again). And in whole interview of job in UK, I am really working in my current firm.

if the UK firm hire an agency to do background check, can they really able to check i started a new work during the visa process? (As HKIRD, mpf cant disclose my information to other parties)

Sorry for asking so many questions
