In short, what we have here is a piece of homework. These are highly intelligent, highly talented musicians, and like a shrewd politician plotting their next campaign platform, Black Country New Road have detected just what ingredients they needed to mix in order to make what is supposed to be a great record. And today, they get an A+ on their homework. But that’s not art. As good as the music is, it makes me a little sad to see punk music appropriated for what are ultimately such bourgeois ambitions. It’s a masterpiece that has as many flaws as it has original ideas– zero. Equally as perfect as it is hollow. It may look great on your topster, but it is only a matter of time before it’s thought of as inconsequential as their debut record is in the greater rock music canon.
