[Syria Civil War-Russia] Syrian rebel shelling destroys at least seven Russian planes, report says

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/jan/03/syria-russia-planes-rebel-shelling

At least seven Russian planes were destroyed by rebel shelling at the Khmeimim airbase in Syria on 31 December, the Russian daily Kommersant reported late on Wednesday, citing two sources.

If confirmed, the attack would mark the single biggest loss of military hardware for Russia since it launched airstrikes in Syria in autumn 2015. More than 10 servicemen were wounded in the shelling by “radical Islamists”, the report said.

At least four Su-24 bombers, two Su-35S fighters and an An-72 transport plane, as well as an ammunition depot, were destroyed by the shelling, Kommersant said on its website, citing two “military-diplomatic” sources.

http://www.dw.com/en/poland-hungary-say-eu-migration-policy-has-failed/a-42016262

The leaders of Poland and Hungary said on Wednesday that the firmly reject the European Union's efforts to resettle refugees throughout the 28-member bloc.

"The EU's migration policy... has failed," Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban told a news conference in Budapest.

"It is clear that the European people don't want immigration, while several European leaders are still forcing the failed immigration policy," he added.

Study: Only better integration will reduce migrant crime rate
http://www.dw.com/en/study-only-better-integration-will-reduce-migrant-crime-rate/a-42013143

Only better integration options will reduce the risk of increased crime rates among migrants, a study has found. The study also linked a rise in crimes Lower Saxony with an increase in migrant arrivals.

The study also suggested a link between an increase in reported violent crimes in Lower Saxony and a significant increase in migrant arrivals in the state.

Police witnessed an increase of 10.4 percent in reported violent crimes in 2015 and 2016; 92.1 percent of the increase (not the total number of violent crimes) was attributable to migrants. But the study's authors, also warned that part of the increase was due to the fact that violent crimes committed by migrants were twice as likely to be reported compared to those committed by German nationals.

Former UK Prime Minister Blair has warned British voters time is running out to stop Brexit. An overwhelming majority of Labour members — although not their leaders or many voters — share his wish for a Brexit reversal.

"Make Brexit the Tory [ruling, Conservative Party] Brexit," Blair said. "Make them own it 100 percent. If Labour continues to go along with Brexit and insists on leaving the Single Market, the handmaiden of Brexit will have been the timidity of Labour."

Pennsylvania's Shuster to join GOP exodus

https://www.politico.com/story/2018/01/02/bill-shuster-retiring-from-congress-320135

House Transportation Committee Chairman Bill Shuster announced Tuesday that he’s stepping down at the end of his term, joining a fast-growing wave of GOP lawmakers heading for the exits. Since he is term-limited out of the committee's chairmanship after three terms, many insiders had speculated that this would be Shuster’s last year in Congress.

With Tuesday's announcement, the Pennsylvanian joins a long list of Republicans stepping down in 2018, including Aviation Subcommittee Chairman Frank LoBiondo of New Jersey, Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Vice Chairman John Duncan of Tennessee and committee member Blake Farenthold of Texas.

Bannon Responds: 'I Support' Trump 'Day in and Day Out'

Steve Bannon responded to President Donald Trump's blistering assault by calling the president "a great man" and saying, "I support him day in and day out."

But Bannon remained nonplussed and steadfast in his support of the president.

"The President of the United States is a great man," Bannon said on Breitbart News Tonight."

"You know I support him day in and day out, whether going through the country giving the Trump Miracle Speech or on the show or on the website," Bannon said, responding to a caller.

Bannon again early Thursday reiterated his continued support of the president.

"Nothing will ever come between us and President Trump and his agenda," Bannon said on Breitbart Radio, CNN reported. "We're tight on this agenda as we've ever been."

"President Trump, with the whole swamp up there, the D.C. apparatus … he is fighting every day," Bannon told another caller Wednesday night.

"And maybe things get off track, or stuff gets said, and all this heated stuff, but however, this is a guy, you voted for him, you supported him, is there any doubt in your mind he's been fighting for and working for you, the deplorables, the forgotten man and woman, the silent majority, every day he's been there?"

artial transcript below.

JUSTIN: First of all, I think [Donald Trump] made a huge mistake, Steve, bashing you like he did today on Twitter. That was devastating to me. I hope in the future you can forgive him for that when we come to 2020, because I’m sure he’s going to need your help.

BANNON: The President of the United States is a great man. You know I support him day in and day out, whether going through the country giving the Trump Miracle speech or on the show or on the website, so I don’t you have to worry about that. But I appreciate the kind words.

JUSTIN: Yeah, that just made me sick to my stomach, though.

BANNON: President Trump, with the whole swamp up there, the D.C. apparatus, the nullification project, everything going on; he is fighting every day. There’s no doubt in your mind, right? And maybe things get off track, or stuff gets said, and all this heated stuff, but however, this is a guy, you voted for him, you supported him, is there any doubt in your mind he’s been fighting for and working for you, the deplorables, the forgotten man and woman, the silent majority, every day he’s been there?

GAYLE: I’ve never thought that any of us were deplorables. I thought they all were criminals, because I know who they are. I’ve done the savings and loans. I took down many, I mean, I did the banking work. I do know across the country, I do know the history. We are fighting the criminals in Washington. We are fighting the seventy- and eighty-year-old criminals. We are fighting the people, the Clintons and the Bushes. We do know the history. We are not the deplorables. We are the subdued by the criminals in Washington… I happen to know this country is greater because of a Stephen K. Bannon.

[Trump] Tell-all book on Trump to be released early despite White House legal effort

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/jan/04/trump-lawyers-book-steve-bannon-white-house

Lawyers for Donald Trump moved on Thursday to try to shut down an explosive new book which has exposed chaos behind the scenes at the White House. In response, the book’s US publisher brought publication forward to Friday.

The book’s author, Michael Wolff, tweeted: “Here we go. You can buy it (and read it) tomorrow. Thank you, Mr President.”

[Trump] 'Bannon may already be cooperating with Mueller': tell-all book shifts frame of Russia inquiry
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/jan/04/trump-russia-steve-bannon-book-robert-mueller

The most explosive aspect of Bannon’s take, revealed by Fire and Fury, is Trump’s handling – or rather mishandling – of the Russia investigation that rages around him. Assuming Wolff’s account to be accurate (and Bannon has said nothing so far to suggest otherwise) the former chief strategist considered Trump entirely out of his depth with regard to special counsel Robert Mueller’s inquiry into possible links between Russia and the Trump team.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-42574870

North Korea has accepted an offer to attend high-level talks next week, South Korean officials have said. The meeting, on 9 January, will focus on finding a way for North Korean athletes to attend the Winter Olympic Games in South Korea in February. The meeting is expected to be held at Panmunjom, on the border.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said this week that sending a delegation to the Games would be "a good opportunity to show unity" among North Koreans.

http://www.dw.com/en/us-suspends-security-assistance-to-pakistan-after-donald-trump-calls-it-terrorist-haven/a-42034357

The US State Department on Thursday announced the White House's decision to suspend security assistance to Pakistan worth significantly more than the $255 million (€211 million) in military aid given to Pakistan to purchase American military equipment.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the decision signaled growing frustration in the White House over Pakistan's failure to target terrorist networks attacking US troops stationed in Afghanistan.

[Germany] Germany's CSU returns to far-right political battleground

http://www.dw.com/en/germanys-csu-returns-to-far-right-political-battleground/a-42031195

The parliamentarians of Angela Merkel's Bavarian allies, the Christian Social Union (CSU), started their traditional conclave on Thursday by making their customary tough noises about immigration policy.

The CSU Bundestag members will be talking until Saturday in Kloster Seeon, a tiny lakeside idyll not far from the Austrian border, with a whole series of matters to settle ahead of next week'sgrand coalition talks, due to begin in Berlin on Sunday.

The CSU bigwigs went into their retreat warning the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) that it would have to make some concessions. After all, the SPD, with its historically poor result of 20.5 percent in September's election, had initially intended to withdraw into opposition for this legislative period.
