The expression is used superstitiously to avert the possibility that something just mentioned (if bad) might not occur, or (if it is a good thing) might occur. The action may or may not be performed, depending on how literally the speaker adheres to the superstition. If it is taken literally, it is usual to attempt physically to touch some wooden object whilst, or shortly after, exclaiming touch wood. Failure to find and touch a wooden item within a short time may be considered ominous, and cause mental distress to the person involved.

touch wood的來源，它最早見於1908年的《威斯敏斯特公報》上。它有可能起源於19世紀英國一種叫做“touch-wood”的遊戲。依照遊戲規則，觸摸到木頭的人就可以不被捉到。這個短語的意思和knock on wood一樣，Knock on wood 按字面的意思就是“敲敲木頭”，這個短語是指接觸木制的東西可以確保好運、甩掉壞運氣。這是一個典型的英語慣用語。例如：I have never been without a job, touch wood!！這個短語的起源和宗教信仰或迷信有些關聯。它很可能起源於古代人的一種信念，即碰一碰樹木可以驅邪或可以找到保護神，當時人們認爲保護神是住在樹裏面的，特別是橡樹。 也有的人認爲knock on wood 起源於基督徒發誓或祈禱好運時觸摸一個木制十字架的儀式。早期的基督徒認爲他們所觸摸的正是耶酥殉難的那個十字架。到了後來他們認爲只要觸摸任何木制十字架或是十字架的一部分，其意義都和觸摸耶酥殉難十字架是一樣的。 Knock on wood 在挪威有一個變體，即knock on the table 。既然在室內很難找到木頭，找一件包含木制材料的家具代替木頭也就順理成章了。
