1) Suitable to be grown in a wide variety of climate, resulting in different expressions
- moderate (Bordeaux, Margaret River) → more greeness
- warm (Napa, Tuscany) → ripe black fruits
2) Great blending partner with many grape varieties, as a major or minor part of the blend
- Major: e.g. Bordeaux (lack of mid-palate) complemented by Merlot that provides fruit and soften tannins; Australia: Cabernet-Shiraz; South Africa: Cape Blend
- Minor: blended with Sangiovese (Chianti), Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero) to give black fruit characters and tannin structure
3) High in tannin, supports oak maturation and long-term ageing → resulting in wines that can command high prices
4) Consumer recognition: New wine regions/makers prefer this over obscure varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon can sell
