RUMOUR: According to an unconfirmed report, the Mercedes team has received an uncomfortable message from the brand's headquarters in Germany.
Wolff and consorts will be given two races to demonstrate that they can considerably improve the car's performance. If they fail to do so, attention will shift to Aston Martin, the team of which Mercedes is a major shareholder in addition to being a supplier.
It is said that Mercedes chiefs are willing to direct more attention to giving Alonso the fastest power units instead of Hamilton.
Although the engines of Mercedes and Aston Martin - produced at the Brixworth plant - are similar in theory, minor differences exist in practice.
Hamilton was given the quickest engine in pre-season testing, with his unit delivering around three kilowatts or around four horsepower more than that of Alonso.
