Ross Softens Expectations for a U.S.-China Trade Deal This Week

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-05-01/ross-softens-expectations-over-a-u-s-china-trade-deal-this-week

The Trump administration sought to temper expectations for a swift breakthrough on trade issues with China as a delegation of senior U.S. officials prepares to visit Beijing this week.

Lighthizer will be among senior members of the Trump administration traveling to China this week to discuss trade. He will be joined by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, White House advisers Larry Kudlow and Peter Navarro, and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.

Earlier Tuesday, Ross played down the possibility of a breakthrough. The meetings will start Thursday and the U.S. officials plan to head home by the weekend, though the trip could be cut short “if it’s not satisfactory,” he said in an interview with CNBC.

Mueller 'threatened Trump with subpoena' amid Russia probe

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-43971954

Special Counsel Robert Mueller warned he could issue a subpoena for Donald Trump to appear before a grand jury as part of a probe into alleged Russian election meddling, US media report.

Mr Mueller suggested the move during talks with Mr Trump's lawyers in March.

He said the subpoena would compel the president to face investigators, the Washington Post reports.

It is believed to be the first time the special counsel raised the possibility of forcing Mr Trump to testify.

South Korea says it wants U.S. troops to stay regardless of any treaty with North Korea

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea said on Wednesday the issue of U.S. troops stationed in the South is unrelated to any future peace treaty with North Korea and that American forces should stay even if such an agreement is signed.

“U.S. troops stationed in South Korea are an issue regarding the alliance between South Korea and the United States. It has nothing to do with signing peace treaties,” said Kim Eui-kyeom, a spokesman for the presidential Blue House, citing President Moon Jae-in.

Czech ruling party says near coalition deal to end limbo: Pravo

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-czech-politics/czech-ruling-party-says-near-coalition-deal-to-end-limbo-pravo-idUSKBN1I30TM?il=0

PRAGUE (Reuters) - The Czech ruling ANO party could be days away from agreeing the text of a coalition agreement with the center-left Social Democrats, an ANO official was quoted as saying on Wednesday, raising hopes for an end to months of political instability.

The Czech Republic has been without a full-fledged government for half a year as most parties have balked at joining up with ANO while its billionaire businessman leader Andrej Babis fights off fraud allegations.

The Social Democrats have also said they are hoping to reach a deal soon. Any agreement would have to be backed in a referendum of Social Democrat members, possibly later this month.

Armenian protesters block routes to capital, road to airport

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-armenia-politics-protests/armenian-protesters-block-routes-to-capital-road-to-airport-idUSKBN1I30GZ

YEREVAN (Reuters) - Armenian protesters blocked some routes into the capital, Yerevan, and a road to the airport on Wednesday after Nikol Pashinyan, blocked in parliament from becoming prime minister, announced a nationwide campaign of civil disobedience.

Days of protests in the small ex-Soviet state have created a standoff between Pashinyan’s supporters, who have mobilized thousands of people to take to the streets, and a ruling elite which is determined to hold on to power and still controls the security apparatus.

The ruling Republican Party thwarted Pashinyan’s bid to take over as prime minister on Tuesday.

But the Republican Party, allied to Sarksyan, has a majority in the legislature and after hours of acrimonious debate it withheld its support for Pashinyan, leaving him short of the support he needed.

Another attempt to elect a new prime minister is due in a week. But if parliament fails to elect a new prime minister with majority support twice, elections must be held.

Europe's Fight to Save the Iran Deal Isn't Just About Diplomacy

https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2017/10/iran-nuclear-trump-europe/542094/

The Europeans “see this as their great diplomatic achievement, resolving a crisis that could have led to war through diplomatic means, through patient negotiations,” Slavin said. She said the Europeans have different views than Trump and other critics of the deal about what will ultimately transform Iran into a country that is easier to deal with for everyone. The Europeans, she said, point to the renewed economic activity in Iran and the return of major European companies that will, in their view, ultimately strengthen Iranian civil society. But, she added, there is a genuine philosophical difference, as well. “Europe believes in multilateralism,” she said. “Europe believes in diplomatic solutions.”

An EU spokesman said in an email that David O’Sullivan, the European Union’s ambassador to the United States, was on Capitol Hill on Wednesday to meet with lawmakers. Also present, he said, were Araud, Kim Darroch, the U.K. ambassador to the U.S., and Peter Wittig, the German envoy.

“The key messages we’re keen to convey are (a) to explain why the Iran deal is working; (b) is that it is not a bilateral deal but a multilateral deal and (c) the EU will do everything in its power to make certain it stays in place,” the spokesman said.

Mahathir 係 the Guardian的訪問

'This election is personal': Mahathir Mohamad, 92, vows to stop 'corrupt' protege
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/may/02/mahathir-mohamad-92-vows-to-stop-corrupt-protege-malaysia

While Najib denied the allegations and cleared himself of any wrongdoing, the Malaysian government investigation is widely regarded as a farce, with not a single person arrested. According to Mahathir, the scandal was the moment he realised that Najib was “not the man I thought he was”.

“Why do I want to remove Najib? I should have thought the whole world would know,” says Mahathir incredulously. “This man steals money. Not a few hundred dollars, not a few thousand dollars – he stole billions of dollars and that has been verified by investigations here in Malaysia and the US.”

The “Mahathir factor” has also made the election outcome more uncertain than originally predicted - 65% of the seats are now competitive compared with 50% in 2013, despite Najib’s government doing everything possible to swing the system in its favour.

“What efforts were made to reach out to Mr. Flynn about seeking immunity or possible pardon?” Mr. Mueller planned to ask, according to questions read by the special counsel investigators to the president’s lawyers, who compiled them into a list. That document was provided to The Times by a person outside Mr. Trump’s legal team.

https://goo.gl/TptRmj

" After investigators laid out 16 specific subjects they wanted to review with the president and added a few topics within each one, Sekulow broke the queries down into 49 separate questions, according to people familiar with the process."

Trump

So disgraceful that the questions concerning the Russian Witch Hunt were “leaked” to the media. No questions on Collusion. Oh, I see...you have a made up, phony crime, Collusion, that never existed, and an investigation begun with illegally leaked classified information. Nice!

No questions on Collusion."...

Eighteen House Republicans have nominated Donald Trump for the 2019 Nobel peace prize.

In a letter spearheaded by the Indiana Republican Luke Messer and sent to the Norwegian Nobel committee, the lawmakers claim that Trump should “receive the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his work to end the Korean War, denuclearize the Korean peninsula and bring peace to the region”.

China installs cruise missiles on South China Sea outposts: CNBC

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-southchinasea-china-missiles/china-installs-cruise-missiles-on-south-china-sea-outposts-cnbc-report-idUSKBN1I336G?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - China has installed anti-ship cruise missiles and surface-to-air missile systems on three of its outposts in the South China Sea, U.S. news network CNBC reported on Wednesday, citing sources with direct knowledge of U.S. intelligence reports.

The installations, if confirmed, would mark the first Chinese missile deployments in the Spratly Islands, where several Asian countries including Vietnam and Taiwan have rival claims.

China has made no mention of any missile deployments but says its military facilities in the Spratlys are purely defensive, and that it can do what it likes on its own territory.

CNBC quoted unnamed sources as saying that according to U.S. intelligence assessments, the missiles were moved to Fiery Cross Reef, Subi Reef and Mischief Reef within the past 30 days.
