Nigeria: President Buhari says he will seek second term

http://www.dw.com/en/nigeria-president-buhari-says-he-will-seek-second-term/a-43312448

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday declared he would run for re-election next year.

He will seek his ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) party's ticket to contest the 2019 election.

Buhari indicated his intention to run for a second four-year term during a closed-door national executive meeting of the APC party; however, the public announcement first came over Twitter.

The decision put an end to months of speculation concerning the future of the 75-year-old's political career following bouts of an undisclosed illness.

US: FBI raid targets Donald Trump's lawyer

http://www.dw.com/en/us-fbi-raid-targets-donald-trumps-lawyer/a-43315918

Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) conducted a raid at the offices of President Donald Trump's longtime personal lawyer Michael Cohen (pictured) on Monday.

The raid responded at least partly to a referral by Robert Mueller, the special counsel in charge of investigating allegations of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia during the US presidential election, Cohen's lawyer Stephen Ryan said.

Speaking with reporters, Trump strongly condemned the raid and said that the Mueller investigation was "an attack on our country."

Although the referral reportedly came from Robert Mueller's offices, The New York Times (NYT) reported that the raid did not appear to be directly related to Mueller's Russia probe. The referral likely resulted from information Mueller uncovered and handed over to prosecutors.

Germany: Flights canceled as public sector strikes begin

http://www.dw.com/en/germany-flights-canceled-as-public-sector-strikes-begin/a-43316354

A one-day "warning strike" has kicked off at airports across Germany, with at least half of scheduled flights delayed or canceled.

Significant traffic disruptions were reported at Frankfurt, Munich, Cologne, Bremen and Berlin.

German carrier Lufthansa said in a statement that only 800 of its 1,600 flights would go ahead. Some 90,000 travelers were expected to be affected.

The walkout, led by major German labor union Verdi, aims to push for a pay rise of 6 percent or at least 200 euros ($245) per month for the 2.3 million public sector workers across the country.

China’s Vast Intercontinental Building Plan Is Gaining Momentum

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-04-09/china-s-belt-and-road-gains-momentum-from-kunming-to-mombasa?

The program isn’t without controversy: debt risk is rising, an influx of Chinese workers has fueled tension with locals, and there are worries about China’s dominance in the region. And not all of the projects have succeeded.

Syria 'chemical attack': Trump pledges 'forceful' US response

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-43707023

US President Donald Trump has promised a "forceful" response to the alleged chemical attack in Syria, as Western leaders consider what action to take.

"We have a lot of options militarily," he told reporters. He added that a response would be decided "shortly".

Mr Trump said the US was getting some "good clarity" on who was responsible for the incident in Douma on Saturday.

Medical sources say dozens were killed in the alleged attack but exact numbers are impossible to verify.

The AFP news agency quoted French government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux as saying on Tuesday that "if a red line had been crossed, there will be a response", adding that intelligence shared by the two leaders "in theory confirms the use of chemical weapons".

Sudan's president orders release of all political prisoners

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/apr/10/sudans-president-orders-release-of-all-political-prisoners

Sudan’s president, Omar al-Bashir, has ordered the release of “all political detainees” held in the country, state media said, weeks after mass arrests in a crackdown on anti-government protests.

Hundreds of opposition activists, leaders and protesters were arrested in January by security agents to curb demonstrations that erupted on the back of rising food prices, including bread.

Some activists were later freed but many remained in detention, including top opposition leaders Khaled Omar of the Sudanese Congress party and Mokhtar al-Khatib, the head of the Sudan Communist party.

Sina did not say how many prisoners would be set free and did not identify any of them.

Blow to Colombian peace deal as former Farc rebel chief arrested on drug charges

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/apr/10/colombian-peace-deal-jesus-santrich-drug-trafficking-charges

A former Colombian rebel commander has been arrested on US drug-trafficking charges, in a shocking development that heaped more pressure on the stumbling peace process with the demobilized Farc guerrillas.

Seuxis Hernández – a blind former peace negotiator better known by his alias Jesus Santrich – was detained early on Monday and awaits probable extradition to the United States, where prosecutors in New York accused him of conspiring to ship 10,000kg of cocaine.

Santrich’s former comrades rejected the charges, accusing the government of using the former guerrilla as a “trophy” to be presented to President Trump, who had been due to visit to Colombia and Peru this weekend.

Iván Márquez, another Farc leader, said on Tuesday that Santrich’s arrest was the result of a plot orchestrated by US and Colombian authorities following a December visit to Colombia by Jeff Sessions, the attorney general.

Azerbaijan election: Ilham Aliyev all but certain to win another term

http://www.dw.com/en/azerbaijan-election-ilham-aliyev-all-but-certain-to-win-another-term/a-43334472

Azerbaijan's strongman President Ilham Aliyev is all but certain to secure a seven-year mandate in Wednesday's snap election, extending his rule over the oil and gas rich country he has led since 2003.

Aliyev took control of the Caspian Sea state from his father Geidar, who wielded power for more than three decades as the Soviet-era head of the Communist Party and later as president of the independent state.

Opposition parities are boycotting the vote because of a crackdown on dissent and what they say are the absence of free and fair elections. They say the election exercise is meant to legitimize familial rule.

Russia warns any U.S. missiles fired at Syria will be shot down

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-mideast-crisis-syria/russia-warns-any-u-s-missiles-fired-at-syria-will-be-shot-down-idUSKBN1HI1BY

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Russia has warned that any U.S. missiles fired at Syria over a suspected chemical weapons attack on a rebel enclave would be shot down and the launch sites targeted, raising the possibility of a U.S.-Russian confrontation.

Issuing the warning on Tuesday evening, the Russian ambassador to Lebanon also said such a clash should be avoided and Moscow was ready for negotiations. But his remarks could raise fears of direct conflict for the first time between major powers backing opposing sides in Syria’s protracted civil war.

Moscow and Washington sparred at the United Nations on Tuesday over the use of chemical weapons in Syria as Washington and its allies considered whether to strike at Syrian government forces over the alleged poison gas assault.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday canceled a planned trip to Latin America later this week to focus instead on talks with Western allies about possible military action to punish Assad for the suspected gas attack on a rebel-held town that had long withstood a devastating Syrian government siege.

“If there is a strike by the Americans, then ... the missiles will be downed and even the sources from which the missiles were fired,” Alexander Zasypkin, the Russian ambassador in Beirut, told Hezbollah’s al-Manar TV, speaking in Arabic.

Trump warns Russia on Syria missile threat

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-43727829

US President Donald Trump has tweeted that Russia should "get ready" for missiles to be fired into Syria, in response to an alleged chemical attack at the weekend.

Senior Russian figures had threatened to meet any US strikes with a response.

Mr Trump previously promised a "forceful" response.

President Bashar al-Assad's government - which receives military backing from Russia - denies being behind any chemical attack.

@realDonaldTrump

Our relationship with Russia is worse now than it has ever been, and that includes the Cold War. There is no reason for this. Russia needs us to help with their economy, something that would be very easy to do, and we need all nations to work together. Stop the arms race?

Speaker Paul Ryan will announce on Wednesday that he plans to retire at the end of his term, sources told The Hill.

Rumors have been swirling for months that the Wisconsin Republican — who is serving in his second year in the Speaker’s office — was considering retiring.

The move could strike a blow to GOP fundraising efforts as they gear up for a contentious midterm election season.
