Germany admits Russian hackers infiltrated foreign and defense ministries

http://www.dw.com/en/germany-admits-russian-hackers-infiltrated-foreign-and-defense-ministries/a-42775517

The German government admitted on Wednesday that the foreign and defense ministries had been infiltrated by Russian hacking group APT28.

Citing anonymous sources, the German news agency dpa reported the group likely placed a piece of malware in a key government network. The malware could have remained in the government's networks for as long as a year, security officials said.

The German Interior Ministry confirmed the breach. "We can confirm that the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and intelligence services are investigating a cybersecurity incident concerning the federal government's information technology and networks," an Interior Ministry spokesman said.

The hackers reportedly infiltrated the government's "Informationsverbund Berlin-Bonn" (IVBB) network, a specially designed communications platform that sits separate from other public networks for supposed added security. It's used exclusively by the Chancellery, the German parliament, federal ministries, the Federal Audit Office and several security institutions in Berlin and Bonn, the former German capital where some ministries still have offices.

The government said it receives roughly 20 attempted hacking attacks per day, while German intelligence services also carry out penetration tests once per week.

Trump's fourth communications chief Hope Hicks resigns

http://www.dw.com/en/trumps-fourth-communications-chief-hope-hicks-resigns/a-42777843

White House Communications Director, Hope Hicks, announced her departure on Wednesday, a day after testifying for nine hours in front of US lawmakers investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election.

One of US President Donald Trump’s closest and most loyal confidantes, she is also his longest-serving aide, having become the spokesperson for his US presidential campaign in 2015.

On Tuesday, Hicks was interviewed by a congressional panel investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election and contact between Trump's campaign and Moscow.

During her testimony, she acknowledged that she had occasionally told "white lies" for Trump. But she said she had not lied about important matters.

The White House insisted Hicks' resignation had nothing to do with her appearance before the panel.

South Korea says sex slave issue not over

http://www.dw.com/en/south-korea-says-sex-slave-issue-not-over/a-42778160

Re-opening a sensitive issue, South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Thursday said Japan cannot declare the issue of its former wartime sex slaves "over." He called on Tokyo to apologize over the issue and confront wrongdoings.

Moon made the comments during a speech marking a national holiday commemorating Korean resistance to Japanese that Japan was in no position to declare the emotionally charged issue settled.

"As the perpetrator, the Japanese government shouldn't say 'it's over'," said Moon. "Wartime crimes against humanity can't be swept under the rug by saying 'it's over'."

Moon's comments drew an immediate rebuke from Tokyo.

A top Japanese government spokesman Yoshihide Suga, told a regular press conference: "President Moon mentioned the comfort women issue although we confirmed the final, irreversible conclusion in the 2015 agreement betweenJapan and South Korea."

"It goes against the Japan-South Korea agreement. We cannot accept it at all and feel it is extremely regrettable. We immediately conveyed our stance and made a strong protest to the South Korean side through diplomatic channels."

Scotland, Wales defy London with laws to keep powers after Brexit

http://www.dw.com/en/scotland-wales-defy-london-with-laws-to-keep-powers-after-brexit/a-42764193

On Tuesday, as Britain debates how to best incorporate EU law into national legislation once it exits the bloc, the governments of Scotland and Wales announced that they would introduce their own laws to prevent London from weakening their autonomy as a result of Brexit.

In the coming days, laws aimed at strengthening regional powers — including in the agriculture and fishery sectors, which are currently governed by EU frameworks — will be debated by the devolved parliaments in Edinburgh and Cardiff.

The Scottish, Northern Irish and Welsh governments are concerned that the London parliament, which legislates on behalf of the whole of the UK, will seek to pass laws unilaterally that incorporate EU treaties into British national law, denying the three countries a say on key regional policies.

The British government must finalize a deal with Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales before the summer in order to pass its own European Union (Withdrawal) Bill in the national parliament. But after months of wrangling, it indicated on Monday that it would offer no further concessions to the three countries, citing risks to national unity.

Greek coalition forced into cabinet reshuffle after benefits scandal

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/feb/28/greek-coalition-forced-into-cabinet-reshuffle-after-benefits-scandal

The Greek prime minister, Alexis Tsipras, has been forced into an emergency cabinet reshuffle following the resignation of two ministers over housing benefit claims that have embarrassed Athens’ leftist-led coalition. The new lineup was announced on Wednesday as a new round of compliance talks between the debt-stricken country and bailout creditors got under way.

The government spokesman said the deputy prime minister, Yannis Dragasakis, would assume the key portfolio of economy and development minister, while Dimitris Vitsas would replace Yiannis Mouzalas as migration minister. Both are sensitive posts in a county that has battled bankruptcy and the European refugee crisis.

In a surprise move, the Syriza party leader also brought the former leader of the Democratic Left party, Fotis Kouvelis, into government, giving him Vitsas’s post as deputy defence minister.

The reshuffle was triggered by the resignation on Monday of the economy minister Dimitris Papadimitriou after his wife, the alternate labour minister, Rania Antonopoulou, had also quit earlier that day. Antonopoulou gave her notice after it was revealed that she had accepted €23,000 in housing benefits at a time of immense hardship for Greeks.

Tony Blair: Theresa May has no hope of achieving Brexit aims

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/mar/01/tony-blair-pm-has-no-hope-of-achieving-brexit-aims

Tony Blair has said Theresa May has no hope of delivering her negotiating aims if she takes the UK out of the single market and customs union, saying she instead risked sacrificing peace in Northern Ireland “on the altar of Brexit”.

The former prime minister, who is to make a major intervention in Brussels before on Friday, said the Irish border crisis illustrated the “central dilemma” facing the UK and said it was “sickening” to hear senior politicians of the Good Friday agreement.

In comments in support of his predecessor as PM, John Major, who has on a second referendum, Blair condemned the government’s approach as unrealistic, and said it was only by staying in the single market and customs union that a hard border could be avoided.

Putin reveals Russia's 'invincible missile' in pre-poll speech

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-43239331

Russia has developed a new cruise missile that is invincible, according to President Vladimir Putin.

Mr Putin made the revelation as he laid out his key policies for a fourth presidential term, ahead of an election he is expected to win in 17 days' time.

He showcased a range of new weapons, including the cruise missile that could "reach anywhere in the world".

Using video presentations, he said the missile could not be stopped by the US shield in Europe and Asia.

It was "a low-flying, difficult-to-spot cruise missile with a nuclear payload with a practically unlimited range and an unpredictable flight path, which can bypass lines of interception and is invincible in the face of all existing and future systems of both missile defence and air defence". Another weapon he discussed was a submarine launched, long-range missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead.

In the first half of his speech, he pledged to halve poverty in the country within the next six years.

Donald Trump stuns allies by signalling backing for tighter gun control

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/feb/28/trump-background-checks-gun-control

Donald Trump has repeatedly endorsed a series of gun control proposals that put the Republican president at odds with the National Rifle Association and stunned lawmakers within his own party.

The president made the remarks during an extraordinary, hour-long White House meeting on Wednesday with congressional Republicans and Democrats who are under pressure to address gun violence in the aftermath of the massacre at a Florida high school earlier this month.

During the meeting, Trump called for a “beautiful” comprehensive bill that would expand background checks on gun purchases, remove guns from the hands of the mentally ill, bolster security on school campuses and restrict young people from purchasing certain weapons.

Within hours of the meeting’s conclusion, conservatives and some Republicans turned on Trump, who was elected with broad support from the gun lobby and claimed on Wednesday that the National Rifle Association had “no bigger fan”. Breitbart, the far-right news organization that fanned the flames of Trump’s rise, denounced the president as a “gun grabber” who “cedes” to Democrats.

“You have to be very, very powerful on background checks. Don’t be shy,” Trump said during the televised session. He added: “I’d rather have you come down on the strong side than the weak side. The weak side is easier to do.”

Eighty-four percent of Americans favor such a law – although critics note that the proposed legislation still does not cover private sales between private people who are not licensed dealers.

Trump rejected a demand by conservatives in the House that this so-called Fix Nics bill be paired with controversial concealed carry legislation, which is favoured by the NRA and would loosen restrictions by enabling gun owners with concealed-carry permits in their home states to take their firearms across state lines.

Trump repeatedly berated his Republican colleagues, accusing them of being afraid of the NRA, and appeared to take pleasure in stating his willingness to take on the gun lobby.

Fugitive Puigdemont abandons bid to return as Catalan leader

http://www.france24.com/en/20180301-catalonia-spain-puigdemont-abandons-leadership

Catalonia's deposed leader Carles Puigdemont said Thursday he had abandoned his bid to return as regional president in an attempt to unblock a political impasse as the region remains without a fully functioning government.

"I will not put myself forward as candidate to be appointed regional president," Puigdemont, who is in self-exile in Belgium and wanted in Spain for his role in the failed secession bid, said in a video posted on social media.

The 55-year-old former journalist called for a new round of talks to take place "as soon as possible" to choose a new candidate, and put forward Jordi Sanchez, the head of the ANC, a hugely influential pro-independence citizens' group.

Sanchez, however, has been in prison for more than four months, charged with sedition over his role in the secession attempt which culminated on October 27 when separatist lawmakers declared independence.
