Jacob Zuma given 48 hours to resign by South Africa's ANC

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/feb/12/reports-that-south-africa-president-jacob-zuma-has-resigned-dismissed-by-anc

South Africa’s ruling party has given President Jacob Zuma 48 hours to resign, local media has reported.

The decision to tell Zuma to stand down or face being stripped of his office was taken at a specially convened emergency meeting of the highest decision-making body of the African National Congress near Pretoria, the administrative capital, late on Monday evening.

A meeting of the ANC’s national executive committee (NEC) was called after it became clear over the weekend that nearly five days of talks between Zuma and the deputy president, Cyril Ramaphosa, who took over the leadership of the ANC in December, had failed.

After nearly 10 hours of heated debate, Ramaphosa and a key ally of Zuma left the meeting shortly before midnight to drive to the president’s official residence to deliver an ultimatum: stand down or face “recall”, a technical term for the process of ordering an ANC official to leave their post.

However, the 75-year-old retains significant support inside the party and at a local level in many parts of South Africa. Ralph Mathekga, a political analyst and author, said: “Zuma is not just a person. He is a system. There are a whole lot of people whose politics fortunes are tied to his."

Dutch minister admits to lying about 'Greater Russia' meeting with Vladimir Putin

http://www.dw.com/en/dutch-minister-admits-to-lying-about-greater-russia-meeting-with-vladimir-putin/a-42548501

The Netherlands' foreign minister, Halbe Zijlstra, admitted on Monday ahead of a trip to Moscow that he had lied about attending a controversial meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin before he entered politics.

Zijlstra, who became foreign minister in October, claimed to have met Putin at the president's dacha in 2006 while working for the oil company Shell. Putin supposedly told Zijlstra and others he considered Belarus, Ukraine and the Baltic states a part of "Greater Russia," adding: "Kazakhstan was nice to have."

But the 49-year-old told Dutch daily de Volkskrant on Monday that he had not actually been at the meeting. Rather, he had heard the remarks from a colleague who was there. To protect the identity of his source, he took credit for hearing the president talk about "Greater Russia."

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said Zijlstra had made a "big mistake," but that he had not damaged his credibility.

North Korea praises South after delegates return from Olympic visit

http://www.dw.com/en/north-korea-praises-south-after-delegates-return-from-olympic-visit/a-42559017

Diplomatic rapprochement between the two Koreas continued to be the sideshow at the Winter Olympics on Tuesday, after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un praised the South's "very impressive" and "sincere efforts" in welcoming his delegation to the host city of Pyeongchang.

The success of the delegation's three-day visit to the Games had reaffirmed the importance of boosting the "warm climate of reconciliation and dialogue" between the two sides, the North's state-run KCNA agency reported Kim as saying.

"After receiving the delegation's report, Kim Jong Un expressed satisfaction over it and said that very impressive were the features of the south side which specially prioritized the visit of the members of the DPRK side who took part in the Winter Olympics," KCNA said.

Jacob Zuma defies order from South Africa's ANC to resign

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/feb/12/reports-that-south-africa-president-jacob-zuma-has-resigned-dismissed-by-anc

Jacob Zuma has defied an ultimatum from South Africa’s ruling party to resign within 48 hours, pitching the “Rainbow Nation” into an unprecedented political crisis.

However a “defiant” Zuma demanded a three month “notice period” before resigning, one ANC official briefed on the conversation said on condition of anonymity.

The ANC may now have to move a no-confidence motion in parliament against its own former leader. This has been described as a “nightmare option” for the party by commentators.

SPD set for new leader as main German parties look to promote youth

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/feb/12/new-spd-leader-first-sign-of-younger-talent-in-german-government

Germany’s two largest parties are trying to improve the survival chances of the country’s next government by injecting their frontbenches with fresh blood before they formally enter a new “grand coalition”.

Outgoing Social Democrat leader Martin Schulz, who last Friday surprised many by abandoning his ambition to become foreign minister, is set to hand over the party leadership on Tuesday to 47-year-old Andrea Nahles – the second-youngest person and first-ever female head in the 155-year history of the German centre-left.

If Nahles, a former leader of the JuSos youth wing with a talent for powerful and at times brash political oratory, is installed at the helm of the SPD in a caretaker role, five out of six party groups in the German parliament will have female leaders.

U.S. Strikes Killed Scores of Russian Fighters in Syria, Sources Say

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-02-13/u-s-strikes-said-to-kill-scores-of-russian-fighters-in-syria?

U.S. forces killed scores of Russian contract soldiers in Syria last week in what may be the deadliest clash between citizens of the former foes since the Cold War, according to a U.S. official and three Russians familiar with the matter.

More than 200 mercenaries, mostly Russians fighting on behalf of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, died in a failed attack on a base and refinery held by U.S. and U.S.-backed forces in the oil-rich Deir Ezzor region, two of the Russians said. The U.S. official put the death toll at about 100, with 200 to 300 injured.

The Russian assault may have been a rogue operation, underscoring the complexity of a conflict that started as a domestic crackdown only to morph into a proxy war involving Islamic extremists, stateless Kurds and regional powers Iran, Turkey and now Israel. Russia’s military said it had nothing to do with the attack and the U.S. military accepted the claim. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis called the whole thing “perplexing,” but provided no further details.

The government in Damascus called the U.S. action “barbaric aggression” and a “war crime.”

The death toll from the incident, already about five times more than Russia’s official losses since it entered the war in 2015, is still rising, according to one mercenary commander. He said by phone on condition of anonymity that dozens of his wounded men are still being treated at military hospitals in St. Petersburg and Moscow.

似乎好多Republicians都未出晒反應,晏少少應該會多D。

不過,著名Fiscal Hawk - Rand Paul (R-Ky.) 已經出聲屌,話

// And I'm still against deficit spending; just because Republicans are doing it, doesn't make it any better. //

但係要注意Rand Paul係共黨的一個異數,而且相當重視fiscal responsibiilty的一位Senetor。

過兩日,如果有時間group晒有關budget的news睇睇都好

Commonwealth meeting ‘will discuss Queen’s successor’

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/feb/13/commonwealth-group-meeting-queens-successor-bbc

A “high-level group” of Commonwealth leaders is meeting in London to review the governance of Commonwealth nations – amid a report that it will also discuss the succession to Queen Elizabeth when she dies.

The session will bring together seven former ministers and senior officials from across the organisation. It is developing policies on the future governance of the Commonwealth and, according to a report by the BBC, will also examine who should take over on the Queen’s death.

Succession to lead the organisation is not hereditary and will not pass automatically to the Prince of Wales.

A statement is expected later on Tuesday but sources insisted that devising procedures to select the next head of the Commonwealth was “outside the group’s formal mandate” and not on the meeting’s agenda.

One source told the BBC: “I imagine the question of the succession, however distasteful it may naturally be, will come up.”

The Second source said the meeting was “a high-level group that has been commissioned to review the governing of the Commonwealth, but not so much who is going to succeed the Queen of England”.
