Secretary of State Mike Pompeo kicks off Mideast tour in pursuit of new Iran sanctions

http://www.dw.com/en/secretary-of-state-mike-pompeo-kicks-off-mideast-tour-in-pursuit-of-new-iran-sanctions/a-43580671

Barely two days after being sworn in as the new US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo arrived in Saudi Arabia to urge support for a new plan to restrain Iran's military clout in the region.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir on Sunday, Pompeo said: "Iran destabilises this entire region." He added: "It supports proxy militias and terrorist groups. It is an arms dealer to the Houthi rebels in Yemen. It supports the murderous Assad regime (in Syria) as well." He called for unity among the Gulf states.

The Middle East visit, which will also take in Israel and Jordan, aims to muster support for new sanctions against Tehran or the renegotiation of a landmark 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers, including the United States, to limit Iran's nuclear program.

Amber Rudd resigns hours after Guardian publishes deportation targets letter

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/apr/29/amber-rudd-resigns-as-home-secretary-after-windrush-scandal

Amber Rudd has dramatically resigned as home secretary, after repeatedly struggling to account for her role in the unjust treatment of Windrush generation migrants.

The home secretary was forced to step down after a series of revelations in the Guardian over Windrush culminated in a leak on Friday that appeared to show she was aware of targets for removing illegal migrants from Britain.

The pressure increased late on Sunday afternoon as the Guardian revealed that in a leaked 2017 letter to Theresa May, Rudd had told the prime minister of her intention to increase deportations by 10% – seemingly at odds with her recent denials that she was aware of deportation targets.

May is expected to announce Rudd’s replacement on Monday, with potential candidates including communities minister Sajid Javid, who spoke out strongly over Windrush in an interview at the weekend; and David Lidington, who has become a trusted ally since taking over from Damian Green.

Rudd’s departure risks upsetting the delicate balance in May’s cabinet over Brexit, with a showdown looming on Wednesday about Britain’s relationship with the customs union.

UK, Germany, France agree Iran deal is ‘best way’ to stop nuclear threat

https://www.politico.eu/article/iran-nuclear-deal-may-merkel-macron-uk-germany-france-agree-is-best-way-to-stop-nuclear-threat/

The leaders of the U.K., Germany and France agreed this weekend that the Iran nuclear deal is the “best way” to prevent the country from becoming armed with nuclear weapons.

British Prime Minister Theresa May spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel separately on Saturday and Sunday to discuss the Iran deal as well as U.S. tariffs, according to No. 10 Downing Street. A German government spokesman also confirmed Merkel’s conversation with May, as well as her own phone call with Macron on Saturday.

The statement comes after both Macron and Merkel visited U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington within the past week. Macron had hoped to convince Trump to stay in the deal, but said that after his conversations with the U.S. leader, it appeared likely Trump would withdraw from the Obama-era accord on May 12, when a decision is due on whether to extend a suspension of sanctions against Iran.

Italy’s 5Star leader renews push for coalition with PD

https://www.politico.eu/article/luigi-di-maio-5star-leader-italy-renews-push-for-coalition-with-pd/

Luigi Di Maio, the leader of Italy’s populist 5Star Movement, made a fresh attempt on Sunday to break the post-election political deadlock and woo Democratic Party (PD) into forming a governing coalition.

In a letter published by Corriere Della Sera, Di Maio highlighted policies on which both parties could see eye to eye, including the importance of keeping Italy within the European Union and pushing Brussels to tackle tax avoidance.

Both parties also agree on the need to reform EU migration rules to ensure the burden of arrivals falls more evenly across European countries as well as the importance of improving Italy’s health care system and streamlining bureaucracy, he claimed.

The PD vowed after the elections it would remain in opposition. But its interim leader, Maurizio Martina, on Tuesday signalled it was open to entering into a coalition with the populist party if it broke off ties with the center-right coalition made up of Matteo Salivini’s far-right League and Silvio Berlusconi’s center-right Forza Italia.

Sajid Javid replaces Amber Rudd as Home Secretary
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/apr/30/sajid-javid-replaces-amber-rudd-as-home-secretary?

Sajid Javid has been appointed as home secretary, replacing Amber Rudd who resigned after repeatedly struggling to account for her role in the unjust treatment of Windrush-generation migrants.

He is the first BAME politician to hold the role and his appointment could offer hope to critics that the government is aware of how damaging the issue has been for community relations and trust in the immigration system.

James Brokenshire, the former Northern Ireland secretary and longtime May ally, who stood down in January to have a tumour removed from his lung, was moved to Javid’s former job as housing, communities and local government secretary.

The mini-reshuffle was completed by the international development secretary, Penny Mordaunt, taking on the additional role of minister for equalities, held by Rudd.

Trump grants key U.S. allies an extra month of tariff relief

https://politi.co/2r9W4QU

President Donald Trump has decided to extend by one month a temporary exemption from steel and aluminum tariffs for Canada, Mexico and the European Union, the White House announced Monday evening.

The move allows key allies — and three of the U.S.' four largest trading partners — until June 1 to reach some sort of deal with the Trump administration to avoid duties of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum exports sent to the United States. The tariffs had been set to take effect at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday if Trump had not moved to extend the deadline.

The administration has also reached preliminary agreements with three other countries that had initially been granted a temporary exemption — Argentina, Brazil and Australia — allowing them to escape the duties as details are finalized over the next 30 days, the White House said.

One other country, South Korea, had already reached a preliminary deal for a permanent exemption from the steel tariffs because it agreed to cap its exports to the U.S. at 70 percent of the average export volume over the previous three years.

Brexit: UK House of Lords votes to let parliament block 'no deal'

http://p.dw.com/p/2wwfQ

Britain's upper legislative chamber, the House of Lords, on Monday handed the government another defeat by voting to let parliament block a "no-deal" Brexit, if the proposed terms of the country's exit from the EU are not acceptable to lawmakers.

The Lords voted for an amendment giving parliament the right to decide on a next course of action, should members vote down the deal negotiated by the government.

The Lords voted by 335 to 244 for parliament to have the final say on the outcome, including the possibility of staying in the bloc if lawmakers are unhappy with the final agreement.

Armenian opposition leader Nikol Pashinian formally nominated for premier by supporters

http://p.dw.com/p/2wvXA

Armenian opposition leader Nikol Pashinian was formally nominated by his supporters for the vacant post of prime minister on Monday. Though he needs support from several more lawmakers to be assured of winning the vote on Tuesday in parliament, no other candidate had been registered as the deadline passed on Monday evening.

The formal nomination is the latest step in Pashinian's progress from leader of the protests that had forced unpopular Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan to resign to premier with a reform program.

Dominican Republic opens diplomatic ties with China, drops Taiwan

http://www.dw.com/en/dominican-republic-opens-diplomatic-ties-with-china-drops-taiwan/a-43602093

The Dominican government announced Monday that it had cut off ties with Taiwan and established formal relations with China, becoming the latest country to swap its diplomatic allegiances to the mainland nation that considers the self-ruled island a renegade territory.

The agreement was signed early on Tuesday in Beijing by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Dominican Foreign Minister Miguel Vargas.

In the agreement, the Dominican Republic recognized that there is "only one China" and that the government of the People's Republic of China in Beijing is the "sole legal government" representing all of China.

Italy's League set for big regional victory, bolsters national standing

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-italy-politics-region/italys-league-set-for-big-regional-victory-bolsters-national-standing-idUSKBN1I10N8

ROME (Reuters) - The far-right League looked set to secure a resounding victory in a regional vote in northeastern Italy on Monday, bolstering its standing as parties struggle to form a national government.

Initial results from Sunday’s ballot in the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia showed a center-right alliance, led by a local League politician, on course for a clear-cut win, while the center-left and anti-system 5-Star Movement trailed in its wake.

If confirmed, the result would suggest League leader Matteo Salvini has gained political clout after eight weeks of deadlock following last month’s inconclusive parliamentary election.

Heading into Sunday’s regional vote, Salvini had predicted that his chances of putting together a coalition government would be enhanced if his party triumphed, although there was no indication yet that such a breakthrough was in the making.

Syria's Assad presses offensive, missile strikes raise escalation risk

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-mideast-crisis-syria/syrias-assad-presses-offensive-missile-strikes-raise-escalation-risk-idUSKBN1I10HT

BEIRUT (Reuters) - The Syrian army unleashed a massive bombardment against one rebel enclave on Monday and prepared for the withdrawal of insurgents from another as President Bashar al-Assad pushes to crush the rebels’ last besieged strongholds.

However, missile strikes against several government military bases on Sunday - not claimed by any party despite speculation in Israel that its military was responsible - underscored the risks of a wider escalation in the seven-year conflict.

Later on Monday, Syrian state TV said the army would cease fire for 48-72 hours in the pocket between Homs and Hama - the most populous remaining encircled area in Syria - to allow rebel groups to agree a surrender deal under which they would leave for opposition-held areas in northern Syria.

Israel: Benjamin Netanyahu accuses Iran of hiding nuclear weapons activity

http://www.dw.com/en/israel-benjamin-netanyahu-accuses-iran-of-hiding-nuclear-weapons-activity/a-43600856

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has presented what he claimed was proof that Iran had broken the terms of the nuclear deal signed in 2015 with major world powers.

Netanyahu said he was prepared to share the "incriminating" files on Iran's nuclear weapons program, "Project Amad." He said Israel recently uncovered 55,000 documents and 183 CDs from Iran's "nuclear archives."

Later on Monday, US President Donald Trump said he had watched the presentation, describing it as "good." Trump said the televised statement and other recent events showed that he had been "100 percent right" about Iran.

Responding to Netanyahu's allegations, the White House said in a statement: "These facts are consistent with what the United States has long known: Iran had a robust, clandestine nuclear weapons program that it has tried and failed to hide from the world and from its own people."

Reacting to Netanyahu's presentation on Monday, the German government said the IAEA must assess the Israeli information on Iran's alleged nuclear activities immediately. A spokesman said Germany would analyze the information: "It is clear that the international community had doubts that Iran was carrying out an exclusively peaceful nuclear program."

Russia investigation: leaked questions reveal what Mueller wants to ask Trump

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/apr/30/robert-mueller-donald-trump-russia-investigation-interview-questions

Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating Russian interference in the US election, wants to ask Donald Trump about contact between his former election campaign manager Paul Manafort and Russia, the New York Times reported on Monday.

The paper said it had obtained a list of nearly 50 questions that Mueller, investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, wants to put to the US president. More than half relate to potential obstruction of justice.

A central question, especially after recent revelations about the Trump-linked political consultancy Cambridge Analytica’s use of data harvested from Facebook, is: “During the campaign, what did you know about Russian hacking, use of social media or other acts aimed at the campaign?

Mueller also wants to ask: “What did you know about communication between Roger Stone, his associates, Julian Assange or WikiLeaks?” And: “What did you know during the transition about an attempt to establish back-channel communication to Russia, and Jared Kushner’s efforts?”

Federal Labor Member for Perth Tim Hammond has announced he is resigning from Parliament, triggering a by-election in one of Western Australia's highest-profile seats, saying he cannot be a federal politician and a good father to his three children under six.

Mr Hammond said the toll the job was taking on his family was too great.

"I guess I'd reached the point, after more soul-searching than I can describe this morning, that it just wasn't working," he said.
