Bangkok protesters demand end to election delays

http://www.dw.com/en/bangkok-protesters-demand-end-to-election-delays/a-42534107

Demonstrators gathered in front of Bangkok's Democracy Monument on Saturday after the junta announced it would likely postpone the vote for a fifth time.

A large police contingent was deployed to the scene, where protesters waved signs saying "disgusted with dictatorship," and chanted "the people want elections, the people want democracy."

Thailand's military leaders pledged to hold elections soon after they took control in a coup in May, 2014. Since then, a number of dates for the poll have been scheduled, and then postponed.

The junta says the delays were necessary in order to ensure national security and allow reforms to be implemented. Critics argue the military only wants to prolong its time in power.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, the commander who led the coup, said last year there would be elections in November 2018. But a motion passed by parliament in January to defer an election law by three months means the vote will now almost certainly be pushed back to 2019.

Colombian military strikes back after ELN guerrilla attack

http://www.dw.com/en/colombian-military-strikes-back-after-eln-guerrilla-attack/a-42534283

Defense Minister Luis Carlos Villegas said on Saturday the Colombian army had launched a retaliatory attack on the National Liberation Army (ELN) after the left-wing guerilla group blew up a bridge in Cesar Department in northern Colombia and attacked a truck using an explosive device, RCN Radio reported.

The ELN bomb caused a 150-car pile-up, Colombia Director of the Police General Jorge Hernando Nieto said, adding that no injuries had been reported.

President Juan Manuel Santos suspended the peace talks on January 29 for an indefinite period after the rebel group carried out a series of attacks against police, leaving seven officers dead and 40 injured.

The ELN, with an estimated 2,000 fighters, is Colombia's last active guerrilla group, after the FARC signed a peace deal with the government in November 2016.

A Russian airliner carrying 71 passengers and crew has crashed after vanishing from radar screens as it left a Moscow airport for the Urals, media say.

The Saratov Airlines An-148 regional jet was en route to the city of Orsk when it went missing.

An emergency services source has told Interfax news agency the plane crashed and there was "no chance" of survivors.

It reportedly fell near Argunovo, about 80km (50 miles) south-east of Moscow.

According to another news agency, the jet vanished from radar screens two minutes after it left Domodedovo Airport.

Turkish helicopter shot down by Kurdish militia in Syria's Afrin: Erdogan

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-mideast-crisis-syria-turkey-helicopte/turkish-helicopter-shot-down-by-kurdish-militia-in-syrias-afrin-erdogan-idUSKBN1FU0M3

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - A Turkish army helicopter was shot down by Syrian Kurdish YPG fighters near the north Syrian town of Afrin, President Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday and the Turkish military said two soldiers on board the aircraft died.

YPG sources separately confirmed the downing of the helicopter.

“One of our helicopters was downed just recently,” Erdogan said speaking to members of his AK Party (AKP) in Istanbul. “These things will happen, we are in a war... We might lose a helicopter, but they’ll pay the price for this.”

The Turkish military in a statement did not specify a reason for why the helicopter fell. It said two soldiers on board died and technical crews were investigating the crash.

Long robes not necessary attire for Saudi women: senior cleric

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-saudi-women/long-robes-not-necessary-attire-for-saudi-women-senior-cleric-idUSKBN1FU0HN

DUBAI (Reuters) - Saudi women need not wear the abaya - the loose-fitting, full-length robes symbolic of religious faith - a senior member of the top Muslim clerical body said, another indication of the Kingdom’s efforts towards modernisation.

On his radio program, Sheikh Abdullah al-Mutlaq, a member of the Council of Senior Scholars, said Muslim women should dress modestly, but this did not necessitate wearing the abaya.

While not necessarily signaling a change in the law, the statement is the first of its kind from a senior religious figure. It follows the recent pattern of freedoms the Kingdom has been witnessing with the ascent of young Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman to power.

Pressure grows on John Kelly amid reports he offered to resign

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/feb/09/john-kelly-from-the-designated-white-house-grownup-to-trumps-enabler

Pressure on White House chief of staff John Kelly was intensifying on Saturday after a series of missteps, most notably his defence of a senior official accused of domestic violence.

Ominously Donald Trump has been grumbling about Kelly’s performance and weighing up possible replacements, according to media reports.

Reports in the New York Times suggested that Kelly told staff on Friday he was willing to resign over his mishandling of the domestic violence allegations that led to staff secretary Rob Porter’s resignation, and that simultaneously Trump was now considering Mick Mulvaney, currently White House budget director and head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, as a possible successor. But a third chief of staff in just over a year, along with the rapid turnover of other officials, would only fuel perceptions of mismanagement.

Then came his worst week yet. The chief of staff fought for Porter, said to be his closest aide, to keep his job as White House staff secretary despite allegations of physical assault from two ex-wives. Porter has denied the claims and on Friday Trump praised him for doing “a very good job”. A second White House aide, speechwriter David Sorensen, was forced to resign amid similar accusations, which he denied, on Friday night.

At first, Kelly issued a full-throated defence of Porter as a “a friend, a confidant and a trusted professional”. Hours later, when a photo was published showing one of the women with a black eye, Kelly conceded he was “shocked” by the allegations but continued to stand by him. By Wednesday night, however, Porter was gone, and media reports suggested that Kelly had known since last autumn there were allegations against him from his ex-wives. Kelly faced the questions normally reserved for presidents in strife: what did he know and when did he know it?

Trump warns Israel that settlements 'complicate' peace hopes

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-43025705

He also told an Israeli newspaper that he did not believe the Palestinians, and possibly Israel as well, were ready to make peace.

President Trump angered Palestinians in December when he recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

He also threatened to withhold aid unless Palestinians agreed to talks.

The US leader's latest comments came in an interview published on Sunday with the conservative newspaper Yisrael Hayom.

Asked by editor-in-chief Boaz Bismouth when the US would present its peace plan, Mr Trump said: "We will see what happens. Right now the Palestinians are not into making peace, they are just not into it. Regarding Israel, I am not certain it, too, is interested in making peace so we will just need to wait and see what happens."

Asked whether Israeli settlements would form part of the peace plan, he said: "We will be talking about settlements. The settlements are something that very much complicates and always have complicated making peace, so I think Israel has to be very careful with the settlements."

Orbán allies could use EU as cash register, MEPs say

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/feb/12/orban-allies-could-use-eu-as-cash-register-meps-say

A European parliamentary watchdog has called for tougher scrutiny of EU spending in Hungary, as concern grows among MEPs and transparency campaigners that a class of oligarchs with ties to the prime minister, Viktor Orbán, could use the EU “as a cash register”.

Hungary is on course to receive €25bn (£22.2bn) from the EU in the seven years to 2021, making it one of the largest per-capita recipients of the bloc’s economic development funds.

MEPs are increasingly worried that funds are going to Orbán’s family, friends and supporters, who are winning EU-funded infrastructure contracts with little competition – a red flag for anti-corruption campaigners.

Following a recent visit to Hungary, Grässle and her committee found that 36% of tenders for public projects had only one bidder.

Poland and Croatia had an even higher proportion of single-bids for public money at 45%, which the MEPs considered unusually high, she said. “Rules seem to be respected, but at the same time they … avoid competition,” she said in emailed comments.

Grässle said the problems were not isolated to Hungary, and a new kind of “semi-legal” irregularity was emerging. “We see oligarchs in some member states becoming politicians and benefiting at the same time from EU and national money for their companies,” she said.
