As a British Citizen coming back to the UK to settle, you can get free National Health Service (NHS) as soon as you are here. You will only need to pay for prescription (fixed at £8.60 per item), dental treatment and eye test. (Please note that prescription is free in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland).

You will only be able to get welfare benefit once you satisfy the habitual residence test. You will need to live in the UK for at lease 3 months before you meet the habitual residence test.

Once you are in the UK, go and get a National Insurance (NI) number. NI number is like the US Social Security number. Please see link below for details -

You may also want to open an UK bank account in Hong Kong before coming to the UK for peace of mind. Both HSBC and the Bank of East Asia offer this service -

Your wife can apply for a working holiday visa and switch to the Tier 2 (General) dependent visa in the UK. If she has British National (Overseas) passport and she is under 31 years old, she can get a Tier 5 visa without too much difficulties. If she only holds a HKSAR passport, she cannot apply for an UK Tier 5 visa until next year when the COS process starts again. Please note that she cannot switch from a visitor visa (or stamp by an UK immigration officer) to a Tier 2 dependent inside the UK.

I must say that I am not the best person to speak to regarding Tier 2 dependent visa application. You may want to ask your questions on Tier 2 dependent visa in one of the UK immigration forum like the one below -

Two more points -

1) If she is going to come to the UK on a Tier 2 dependent visa and she has BN(O) status, ask her to renew her BN(O) passport before the application and use her BN(O) passport to get the visa.

2) Driving - she may want to learn how to drive and pass her driving test in Hong Kong before coming over to the UK. She can exchange her Hong Kong driving licence to an UK one without test (as long as she gained the Hong Kong driving licence by a driving test in Hong Kong).

HK$1600 will buy you peace of mind - one less thing to do when you arrive in the UK.

The answer to your question is depended on -

1) your English language skills

2) when are you planning to leave Hong Kong for the UK

3) how long you are planning to stay in the UK for

One more point - if you were born outside of the UK and received you British Citizenship via a British Citizen parent, then you are likely to be a British Citizen by descent. A British Citizen by descent cannot automatically pass on his British Citizenship to his child born outside of the UK.

Shes holding BNO and will apply Tier-5 for coming first and then transfer to Tier-2 as you mentioned. But do you know if I need to inform my employer for helping her to transfer to Tier-2?
