NBALakers news: Brandon Ingram says his ‘mentality has totally changed’
In the 2016 NBA Draft, the Los Angeles Lakers selected forward Brandon Ingram with the second overall pick. It was the second straight year the team drafted in that position and may have found their future face of the franchise in the process.
Although Ingram got off to a slow start to his rookie season last year, the Duke product turned it on after the All-Star break and finished strong. The young forward was so impressive in the final stretch of games during his rookie campaign that Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka appear convinced the team have found a star in the making.
With the start Ingram’s second season right around the corner, the soon-to-be 20-year-old is focusing on improving his game, body, and mentality this summer. The Lakers forward recently talked about his offseason work and his efforts to change his mindset moving forward in an interview, via BiPro USA Blog.
“I’m in the weight room more this summer than I have been in the past. My mentality has totally changed,” Ingram said. “My new coaches have really helped a lot with my weightlifting. It’s the same routine for me every single day now.”
Ingram will be a player to watch on the Lakers roster next season as he tries to take the next step in his development. The versatile forward will have the advantage of having better players around him during the 2017-18 campaign with rookie Lonzo Ball coming in as well as Lakers newcomers Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and veteran center Brook Lopez.
In terms of Ingram’s body, the second-year forward hopes that the work he puts in during his time in the weight room this summer will help improve his explosiveness on the court.
“I’m making sure everything I do in the weight room translates to the court, whatever makes my body more explosive,” Ingram said. “Weighted step-ups are great because they simulate jumping off of one foot, which I do in games all the time.”
Ingram and the Lakers will head into training camp next month with the spotlight being on the former Blue Devils star and Ball. The two promising young players could be a dynamic duo in Los Angeles for many years to come with the front office having high expectations for what these two can accomplish in a Lakers uniform.
