Cigarettes After Sex make boring, repetitive, dull music
They're popular amongst "edgy girls" in their late teens or early twenties (the age range I am in). They're terrible.
Their lyrics seem to all be about hooking up and how it makes you feel. It gives a distinct "Sensitive Male Feminist" vibe. Yawn
The vocals sound like the singer really doesn't want to be there.
I get that they're going for a slow and "mellow" vibe, but it has no atmosphere. If you're taking the "energy" out of the music, it's really crucial to build atmosphere, otherwise it gets boring very quickly. Take "Breathe" by Pink Floyd: it's similar sounding, but it creates a really interesting and eerie atmosphere that makes it very enjoyable to listen to. It perfectly draws you into the theme of "Dark Side of the Moon". Cigarettes After Sex fail to do that, and as such, they are boring to listen do. I could sit down and listen to Pink Floyd for hours because of this atmosphere, while just ten minutes of Cigarettes After Sex would be like water torture.
The instrumentation is dull and repetitive. Again, I'll use Pink Floyd as an example because they're a recognisable band that these guys sort of musically resemble. There's a lot going on in Pink Floyd songs, and you can feel the soul and emotion in David Gilmour's guitar playing. There's nothing like that in songs by Cigarettes After Sex.
I don't like them, and I'm not even musically picky about genres and styles, or time period. I mean, I have music of every genre imaginable spanning from the 11th century all the way to 2017. I just don't like this band.
