Home Grown......
Register
Homegrown
Amid Manchester United's interest in Paul Pogba, one of the most asked questions relating to the France international this summer is whether he would count as a home-grown player.
The answer is no. The Premier League ruling on the home-grown quota states:
"A home-grown player will be defined as one who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the Season during which he turns 21)."
Fifa approved Pogba 's move to United from Le Havre on October 7 2009 after a judge of the players’ status committee dismissed Le the French club's complaint complaint against The Reds. Le Havre claimed they had agreed to enter into a contract with the 16-year-old midfielder at the start of the 2009-10 season and United illegally poached Pogba.
As things stand, PL and UEFA definitions of home-grown are pretty much the same thing, so we have a respectable total of 9 in our 25 man squad for the 2016/17 season. (* = trained by MUFC for 3 years between 15 and 21)
Carrick
Johnstone*
Jones
Lingard*
Pogba*
Rooney*
Schneiderlin
Smalling
Young
Pogba and Smalling obviously aren't going anywhere, Lingard can probably be added to that list too but Carrick is getting very close to retirement and it's very possible that Johnstone, Jones, Schneiderlin and Young will be sold, maybe even Rooney. Janujaz and Pereira might return but they really need to impress during their loan spells.
Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford should also qualify as 'home-grown' next season but 2017/18's (hopefully Champions League) squad will need to have 8 home-grown players with 4 a product of our own youth system, at the moment only Shaw and Pogba are in our strongest 11 (oh yes and Rooney):
Lingard*
Pogba*
Smalling
Shaw
Rashford*
Fosu-Mensah*
That's 6 (4 from the club) that will definitely be here next year. Maybe I'm being harsh but the squad is already too big for Mourinho and I have no doubt he will getting rid of a few next year and he will want to bring in more of his own too. This rule might be the difference between players like Januzaj, Pereira, Johnstone, Jones, Young and Schneiderlin staying a squad player/backup or being sold.
Edit: Ok so I'm a bit of an idiot and read the dates on UEFA's site wrong, these rules are already implemented! However, that makes the issue a little more urgent.
yes
