On Friday, Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy attended a special session of the House. Among those in the visitor’s gallery was Ukrainian-Canadian Yaroslav Hunka, a 98-year-old constituent of Speaker of the House Anthony Rota.

Mr. Hunka was presented to the House of Commons by Speaker Rota as a Ukrainian war hero — and, for good measure, a Canadian one too.

During the Second World War, Mr. Hunka volunteered to join a Waffen SS unit of the German army which operated primarily in Ukraine SSR. We have ample historical evidence confirming the SS obsession with murdering Jewish civilians. And, as we were reminded on Sunday night by the Polish Ambassador to Canada, this unit was vicious with Polish civilians as well.
