Because getting an account in LIHKG is difficult and this forum doesn't favor China so users can express their idea freely. Nowadays many forums in HK have already been infiltrated by China. China hires a group of people who control the discussion in the internet via posting wrong information or destroying ongoing discussions. We call them 5 cents. Limiting to only HK ISP email address effectively reduces the number of 5 cents. When you have a good platform, naturally great people with great minds accumulate, and then the true voice of HKer echoes.

Not really familiar with its full history but here is a gist of it.

LIHKG is a relatively new forum in Hong Kong and many of the users here are originally a 20-year old forum called HKGolden, one of the crucial places that gave birth to internet culture of Hong Kong.

Ever since maybe 2016 HKGolden had been criticized for poor management and questionable decision-making. The turning point leading to a massive amount of users leaving the forum was when they decided to block access of third party clients from accessing their service, in order to monopolize their official app. Users felt like they had enough, LIHKG was born, an exodus happened. It's sort of like when Digg users moved to Reddit back in 2010. This place has since become the largest message board in Hong Kong, getting spotlight from mainstream media.

I think that apart from historical reason, the success of LIHKG is contributed by 1. its modern and progressive design compared to competitors, 2. admins lenience towards users and their commitment to protect them, and 3. the dominant youth userbase. Ideas are fresh and creative. The shitposts are hilarious. I believe LIHKG is a HK hybrid of reddit and 4chan, with thoughtful and articulate expressions of the former and the mobility and energy of the latter.

Could you please give us a prove to show you are really an Irish, like taking a photo of your Irish ID card by covering all yr personal details?

I guess your boyfriend can explain to you why and how to do it. You know, there are many 'fake' users recently. It will make us feel like more safer if you do so.

The cultural heritage which was passed down from HK Golden forum is one big and major reason why LIHKG is so special.

Welcome to LIHKG, the forum gathers all citizens (especially young generation) with similar values and thoughts, which contains not only the sense of humour, but the core value of Hong Kong. Like we can say anything we like and break the boundaries. Unlike other forums, which only focuses on one field, I would say LIHKG is the best platform to express creativity in hk, and all the opinions would be respected

lihkg (and formerly hkgolden) got popular because all the other major forums had been bought out by the CPC and would censor views that ran counter to government propaganda.
