So I’m using my boyfriend’s account right now as I had no ways to create one with my email, we have been living together for 2 years so don’t worry, he can help me out with translation all the time. Just wanna have a chat with you guys!

He has been helpful in terms of telling me what’s going on by translating live footage and different news, but he says LIHKG is the one and only reason why this massive revolutionary event could happen in the first place and I wanna know why.

The first question: what’s so special about LIHKG? There’re so many public forums in HK, what’s so different about LIHKG?

because lihkg is formed by the core users of hkg
and also , as I mentioned , getting an ISP email is hard, and we value our account.

Forums are valuable only when other users are using it (it's called "networking effect"). How this site gained the first batch is mainly a historical happening and means nothing special about the site, and I think it is mostly luck that this forum succeeded.

As for why LIHKG became the platform facilitating discussion for the ongoing revolution, I guess it is mostly due to how it is relatively more anonymous to alternatives like FaceBook and the already-massive local userbase.

The government can't censor LIHKG. It is famous for hate speech and verbal abuse.
