My American friends are curious about the ongoing revolutionary events in Hong Kong. I told them the cause is one country, two systems. The baseline is not clear cut, and we already lost faith in our fishy government

I would say China is too big for either of us to make observations with.
Since who I am dealing with are mostly Chinese students who can afford the cost to come to USA for studying, they are somehow levitated from the general public. Ironically these students are usually more pro-government, may be due to the fact that their parents are mostly officials in the CCP. That might be a reason to explain why we observe differently.
For their ability to make critical thinking, you might want to refer to my reply in #316.

I am not familiar with Irish history. But why is Northern Ireland part of the UK but not Ireland? How is it influenced by the UK and how Ireland separated and independent.
