Well I just read in Variety and Entertainment Weekly that Rian Johnson wrote Episode VIII before Episode VII was even made and that he had no direction from Lucasfilm as to what to do about Rey's backstory or any of that...so the reason it doesn't feel like a sequel that tied up the loose ends and teases set up in TFA is because it wasn't a sequel and had nothing, creatively, to do with TFA--which is totally and utterly insane.
