Newcastle United may turn to relegated Premier League players in their search for new recruits this summer, which could lead them to Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams.
The 24-year-old, who has been linked with Newcastle before, missed the end of the season due to injury, meaning he was powerless to stop Leeds dropping into the Championship on the final day of the season.
Relegation could lead to an exodus at Elland Road, and Adams is one player who could now be on the move.
Newcastle an option to sign Tyler Adams
According to 90min, Adams is likely to leave Leeds this summer after just one year with the club. He joined last summer from RB Leipzig, costing £20million.
The report states that Leeds have accepted that he is one player they will likely have to sell following relegation.
90min add that Adams is a target for four Premier League clubs, with Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham all potential suitors.
The report also states that the USA international is attracting interest from Germany, Italy and Spain, but his potential price tag means that staying in England is likely.
While signing a player from a relegated club would hardly scream ambition, Adams could prove to be a shrewd addition to Eddie Howe’s squad.
Could be an astute option for Newcastle
The Magpies are looking for midfield reinforcements, and Adams is someone who could play the defensive ‘number six’ role. He has the energy and tactical awareness to thrive defensively, while he is also strong in possession. That is why Leeds bought him last year, as he was brought in to replace Kalvin Phillips.
Adams operates in a similar role, which is why he could be a good fit for Newcastle. He also has European experience, which could be useful to Howe.
Newcastle saw firsthand what Adams is like this season. He produced a battling performance at St James’ Park, standing up to every Magpies player and showing the heart and desire that would not make him look out of place in a black and white shirt.
