Due to the spread of novel coronavirus, HKCC has cancelled all the face-to-face teaching till 2 March 2020 and started e-learning on 9th February.
The epidemic is unpredictable and it is possible that the face-to-face classes will suspend over the whole semester. Some subjects have already announced the teaching and assignment arrangements during this period. However, several subjects require students to form groups to complete the group assignments. I personally believe such arrangement is inappropriate.
In usual learning, students are allowed to interact with classmates during lectures and tutorials. So, students are able to find groupmates to work on group assignments together. However, with the online teaching method, students are hard to find groupmates. It is hard to form group. Some lecturers said if students are unable to form groups, they will assign groups randomly. This is extremely unfair as students are not allowed to choose groupmates by themselves.
Moreover, all citizens are encouraged to stay at home during this challenging period and I afraid that students cannot discuss the assignments in an interactive and effective manner. Even though we can discuss the assignments through digital means, the quality is a major concern.
Given the above worries on the arrangements on group assignments, I sincerely hope that the college will try to inform the lecturers to use other formats of assessment to replace group assignments, such as changing to individual assignment(s). Thank you for your time and I hope you can consider the above suggestions for the sake of both students’ and lecturers’ best interests.
