Tatsumi Kimishima
“A CEO who doesn’t communicate is at a disadvantage,” says Hahn-Griffiths. “Those who speak from the heart are seen as transparent and build an authentic dialogue.” Kimishima’s dedication to championing the work of his predecessor won over employees. He picked up right where Iwata left off, leading Nintendo into mobile gaming. The move paid off tremendously, with the company releasing the hugely popular Pokémon GO with Niantic in July 2016 and Fire Emblem Heroes in February 2017. Then in March 2017, Kimishima brought the Nintendo Switch to market. In the Switch’s first 10 months, Nintendo sold 4.8 million units in America alone, making it the fastest-selling console in U.S. history. Although Kimishima will be stepping down from his post come June, he will be remembered as a CEO who put his company first. “He’s become the manifestation of what it means to be an employee at Nintendo,” says Hahn-Griffiths.
It is clear that the defining characteristics of a reputable CEO have forever changed, and those business leaders striving to earn such a distinction must first accept their new contract with society. “The expectations of what it takes to be a great leader are those we’ve never seen before,” says Hahn-Griffiths. “They’re not just the top of the organization—they are the heart, soul, moral empathy and persona of what their company stands for.”
