Arsenal transfer news: January target Neto linked with summer transfer

According to Mundo Deportivo, Arsenal could reignite their interest in Barcelona goalkeeper Neto, after previously submitting a loan bid in January.

What’s the latest transfer news involving Neto?
The Brazilian goalkeeper is expected to play his final game for Barcelona this weekend with the club set to part ways with the 31-year-old, according to Mundo Deportivo. The report states that Arsenal could be among those interested.

Arsenal reportedly submitted a loan bid for the shot-stopper in January's transfer window, however a deal never materialised, and it's suggested they could move again for Neto in the summer.

How many clean sheets has Neto kept this season?
Despite playing second fiddle to Marc-Andre ter Stegen at Barcelona, according to Transfermarkt, he has made 11 appearances this season keeping five clean sheets.

Based on figures from FBRef, Neto has achieved a save percentage of 78.9% in La Liga this season and has proven himself to be a convincing backup option.

During his time at Valencia in La Liga, the Brazilian was able to keep ten clean sheets in back to back seasons starting in the 2017/18 campaign which earned him a move to the Spanish giants.

Is Bernd Leno leaving Arsenal?
Leno previously insinuated that he may be keen to leave this summer, however in an interview with Sky Sports, the German clarified his commitment to the club.

“I am still happy at Arsenal, Arsenal is still a big club, a big name around the world and in the Premier League. There is nobody in the dressing room who says ‘I want to leave the club, I am not happy here anymore.’”

As Leno looks set to remain at the club, Arsenal may see Neto as a competent backup option to the 29-year-old.

Do Arsenal need another goalkeeper?
At the start of the season Arsenal parted ways with Emiliano Martinez who joined Aston Villa and has been a revelation. The Argentine is rivalling Man City’s Ederson and Chelsea's Edouard Mendy for the Premier League golden glove and Arsenal might be regretting selling him.

He was replaced in the squad by Brighton’s Mat Ryan who joined the Gunners on a loan deal in the January transfer window, which expires at the end of the season.

He could well be kept on but as things stand, Arsenal will have just one senior option between the sticks in Leno going into next season, making a backup goalkeeper an essential item on Arsenal’s summer shopping list.

According to Transfermarkt, Neto is valued at just £9m, therefore he could be a relatively cheap option for Mikel Arteta.

He's so good': Some Arsenal fans think they've found the perfect replacement for Bernd Leno

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and Bernd Leno have both rubbished claims about a potential summer move for the German (read here), but stranger things have happened in football.

Leno could well suffer the same fate as Emi Martinez did last summer if a decent enough bid comes in. We all know Arsenal have to raise funds to do what Arteta really wants to do in the transfer window, and our number one could well be sacrificed to achieve that.

That wouldn’t really be the wisest of moves, but it’s still very possible. The Gunners will have to find a good enough replacement for Leno if we decide to sell him, but sadly, there aren’t many quality options available on the market at the moment.

Someone like Maty Ryan is a good option as a backup, but he’s definitely not an upgrade over Leno. David Raya was heavily linked last summer, but Brentford could well get promoted to the Premier League, and that might complicate things on that front.

Athletic Bilbao star Unai Simon has been linked as well, but the Spaniard has committed six times as many errors leading to goal this season in La Liga as Leno has in the Premier League. (Read here)

That leaves Arsenal with very few options on the market, but Gooners have come to Edu and Arteta’s rescue with a stunning suggestion.

Some Arsenal fans want Edu to sign Freddie Woodman
Many Arsenal supporters were glued to their TV sets last night to watch Barnsley vs Swansea City. The Swans edged a step closer to achieving promotion back to the Premier League, but things would’ve been very different if Freddie Woodman wasn’t in goal.

The Newcastle United loanee was the star of the show last night as he made four saves – two of which were simply outstanding in the second half. He almost single-handedly kept Swansea in the tie, and many Arsenal fans want him at the Emirates next season.

The Athletic revealed back in January that the Gunners considered a move for Woodman before we signed Ryan on loan. It was a complicated deal to complete in the winter window, but that doesn’t mean Edu and Arteta don’t like him anymore.

Woodman has kept a staggering 22 clean-sheets in all competitions this season. He has conceded just 44 goals in 50 appearances for the Swans, and everybody who has watched him this term is convinced that he will become England’s number one very soon.

The 24-year-old is under contract until the summer of 2023 at Newcastle United. However, the Magpies already have Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow, who have both been brilliant for them over the last 18 months.

That could push Woodman out of the door this summer and Arsenal fans believe that the Englishman would be perfect for Arteta’s side – either as a replacement to Leno or as someone who can come in and compete with him for the number one role.

Arsenal transfer rumours: Yves Bissouma price tag revealed

Brighton have told Arsenal to pay £40m if they want to sign Yves Bissouma this summer, according to The Sun.

What's the latest Arsenal transfer news?
They claim both the North London giants and Liverpool have been told that the Mali midfielder will cost a relative premium despite the fact he is entering the final two years of his contract on the South Coast.

Indeed, while Brighton are understood to be aware there is little they can do to stop Bissouma leaving if big clubs do come in for him, they are determined to get as much money as they can.

What do Arsenal want?
It is also claimed Mikel Arteta wants to pair Bissouma with Thomas Partey in an effort to build a midfield capable of challenging the Premier League's elite next season.

Given Bissouma ranks amongst the top ten players in the division for tackles per game (2.8, via WhoScored) and the top twenty for interceptions (1.7) while Partey himself averages 1.8 tackles, the make-up of that midfield pairing would certainly be one of steel, something Arsenal have been accused of lacking for a while now.

With the future of Granit Xhaka and loanee Dani Ceballos far from certain, Bissouma would appear to be an upgrade in providing protection in the middle of the park, while his 1.81 carries into the opposition's final third per game (via FBREF) is higher than Xhaka's.

Of Bissouma, Partey, Ceballos and Xhaka, it is the Brighton man who averages the highest successful pressing percentage too (34.3%), so he would appear to be a substantial upgrade in a number of areas.

Do Arsenal have much money to spend?
Speaking on last week's episode of the Touchline Talk Podcast, Dean Jones revealed that Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke was likely to offer Arteta extra funds this summer despite a disappointing first full season in charge.

"I think Stan Kroenke will give extra backing in the transfer window in terms of funds," he said from 10:05 mark onwards.

Having managed to move the likes of Mesut Ozil off of the wage bill earlier this year, perhaps there will be scope to tempt Bissouma into a move, albeit it might be more difficult given Arsenal are hugely unlikely to be playing in Europe next season.

What has Paul Merson said about Yves Bissouma?
Speaking on Sky Sports News on April 24th, former Arsenal legend Paul Merson talked up Bissouma.

“Off the top of my head, I am thinking Arsenal would take him, Manchester United would take him," he said (via HITC).

“There are not too many people around in football at the moment who can break things up and pass the ball at the same time.”
