If you look at previous posts I mentioned that I'm gay.
Probably multiple reasons. Most of my friends growing up are ethnically Chinese and even at university I only have a few white friends. So I am generally just more comfortable being around other Asians in general. There is still a cultural difference between Asian-Americans and White Americans even if we all speak English and live in the same country.

U cant read chinese. but u do speak Cantonese, dont you? Just asking.
HISCASTDT 2020-11-17 06:56:11
Unfortunately no. When my family left HK my main language was Canto but my parents made the decision to just speak to me in English so I can't speak it anymore.
At this point my Spanish is way better than my Cantonese.

A lot of hot big muscular guys in the gym are Asian/Chinese nowadays. (as opposed to the stereotype around the 90s)
HISCASTDT 2020-11-17 07:30:34
Idk. A 鬼佬 (gweilo) may have a better idea. All of my Asian friends that dated white people ended up breaking up with them and are now single or dating Asians.
HISCASTDT 2020-11-17 07:51:23
Haha.
Never spend a lot of time at the gym, I think I've gone to the gym at my university like 3 times. I should go because I tend to snack on McDonalds when I'm studying late.

I'm very much a nerd and a lot of my secondary school friends were also. We spent most of the time studying/cramming. (The studying did pay off as we ended up attending various University of California schools).

There is a reputation in the US that Asian men are not masculine so that probably is part of the problem. One of my uncles married a white women though that uncle is from the ABC side of my family and fairly westernized.

In the US sometimes the words FOB or Banana get used to describe Asians. FOB (Fresh off the boat) is used in a negative way for Asians that are too "Asian." So a white person may not want be with an Asian they deem a FOB (though some white people may find it more attractive). My friends are a mix of intl students from HK and ABCs so I think this label is just dumb.
JFreeman 2020-11-17 10:02:21
That label’s pretty racist too imo. A “FOB” guy from the city side of HK is probably more adapted to the US culture than an FOB guy from the Eastern part of Europe. I am often dumbfounded by the overt racism against Asians, and none of the so-called SJWs stand against it.

Cali is in such shit, especially LA, even though Democrats have virtually complete political dominance and wouldn’t in a million years be ever obstructed by any meaningful opposition from Republicans in the state, the big cities are still an absolute mess of slums (especially places like Skid Row and downtown), piss poor infrastructures, and thousands of tents of homeless people.

Here is my opinion towards American, maybe too subjective, so please say if you agree or disagree and let me know the real situation

1. I think celebrities like LBJ are influential yet too subjective toward topics like Freedom, Human right, race issue. On one side people like him say loud on local topic while asking other to stop talking on HK topic just because it affected him. Such a hypocrite. I think i hate biden because Biden acts like him.

2. I support BLM, but i dont think that movement is a good one. There are no concrete solutions on this, no one ever suggested any other than police reform. To me the fundamental problem is poverty & education, not about the skin colour.

I totally think its a racist label. Part of the reason why it sticks is because Asian-Americans sometimes will use that to distinguish between them and new immigrants from Asia (out of fear of being associated with them). Like at my university the intl students from Asia and Asian-American students have completely different social circles. I have friends from both groups but I rarely interact with both my HK friends and Asian-American friends at the same time.

In the US there is some tension between Asians and other minority groups. Whites will often portray Asians as the "model minority" and use the perception of Asian-American success to claim racism doesn't exist and its minorities fault they are not as as successful as whites. This leads other group to resent Asians because Whites use Asians to suppress the legitimate grievances of other minorities.

CA has only become a very democrat state in the past 2 decades. Before Newsom became governor in 2019, we have never had 2 democrat governors back to back for decades. One thing unique in CA is that until 2010 we needed a 2/3 majority in the legislatures to pass a budget so even though Republicans were in the minority they had swaying power. Now you need a 2/3 majority to pass any tax increases. Let's also remember the inland areas are still very Republican and until recently areas like Orange County were still solid Republican. In fact, San Diego is the largest city in the US with a Republican mayor and the House Republican leader is a Californian.

But yes Democrats have done a terrible job with issues like affordable housing (it's not quite as bad as HK). The high speed rail which I support has not been built still. Our social net is way too small and the unemployment benefit processing in CA has been a disaster. I think like I tend to think of the Democrats as the equivalent of the pan-dems in HK so I only like them because they are not Republicans (the pan dems are good because they aren't DAB).

In the West, whites are the ones in power and they shape the narratives about what is attractive. The West has this obsession with thin female models and it is unhealthy. Men are supposed to be tall and muscular (and Asians are less attractive partially because we tend to be shorter). It comes down to different cultural values.
A non beauty example is how the HK media always interviews the students with the perfect DSE scores, in the US they would probably care more about a secondary school athlete then examination scores.

1. Yes of course LBJ is a hypocrite. I support BLM and am glad he stands up for that but what he said about HK is misinformed. Since the HK issue doesn't affect him he probably knows little and the NBA has major financial ties with the Mainland. I think Americans often forget that there are other countries outside of the US. Biden is a politician so yea he will say things. In the US we have this thing called a "pivot" where after the primary you are suppose to moderate your message and move to the center. The pivot basically forces you to lie either in the primary and/or the general election because you change your positions.

2. I think the movement is good and police reform is one step. It is about a social change in the US. Yes poverty is a problem. The reason Blacks live in poorer neighborhoods because the nicer neighbourhoods were redlined for whites only. When the redlines were removed Blacks did not have the financial ability to move (in the US your house is your largest asset). Education is paid by property taxes, poorer neighborhoods have less money for schools so they underperform. Blacks have been trapped in the neighbourhoods and get stuck going to the underperforming schools. The story I told you above is why I would say that there is still white privilege in the US. See the link: https://www.ucf.edu/news/waking-up-to-whiteness-and-white-privilege/

Hope this helps, ask me more questions. Glad you're thinking about issues in the US.

How do you vote BTW? In person or by mail?
Can you still check your ballot whether it is counted?
Also how do you think about the whole election process? Do you think it is just?

My parents kitchen is quite big. The kitchen of the apartment that I live at to attend university is much smaller.

I don't have area of the kitchen but university apartment is 918 ft^2 (2 bedroom, 1 bathroom) parents house is 2,132 ft^2 (3 bedroom, 1 bathroom). When my family lived in HK our apartment was 537 ft^2 (2 bedroom, 1 bathroom).

Haha. I try to read it with google translate and sometimes I can understand it ok.
I really like to read the academic section since I want to get a glimpse into what my life would of been like had I grown up in HK local schools. I've looked at the DSE Math on the HKEAA website and I don't think I could do 1/2 of the problems :(
DSE History and Economics look a lot better but that's what I study in university.
